Suds

Corktown Suds

Weekly Preview:
Both teams struggled in their opening weeks. This is only Corktown’s second home game of the season out of their first 8.
Game #1:
The Suds capitalized on the Chiefs 9 penalties with 3 PP goals. Throw in an empty netter with seconds left to make the final 5-3.
Weekly Summary:
Corktown and Second City both have much to figure out as both teams have only 1 win. Tavares had his 3rd goal of the season for Second City.

Grizzlies

New Jersey Grizzlies

Game #1:

Jagr 0 New Jersey 2

New Jersey shut-out Jagr 2-0 behind a 25 save performance by Cory Schneider. Dustin Byfuglien provided the opening goal at 4:38 of the 1st period. In the second Jeff Skinner of the deflection gave NJ the 2-0 lead. NJ and Cory Schneider would not look back, going on for the win.

Game #2:

Corktown 3 New Jersey 2

Jack Eichels third period goal was the difference maker. New Jersey jumped out quickly with a Jeff Skinner goal in the 1st minute. Bobby Ryan gave NJ the 2-0 lead. In a flash Corktown screamed back with 2 goals in under a minute by Mike Santorelli and Jeff Carter. After a quiet 2nd period Eichel would give Corktown the game winner.

Game #3:

Columbus 3 New Jersey 2 (OT)

Logan Couture scored in OT to give Columbus the game winner. After trading goals for 3 periods it was the late OT goal by a streaking Couture that put Columbus over the top.

Weekly Summary:
Games were exciting, NJ seems to be struggling late in the periods.

Deep Freeze

Minneapolis Deep Freeze

Game #1:

Scottsdale @ Minneapolis: MIN 2 – SXM 1

In Minneapolis only home game of the week, Cam Ward stands on his head making 27 saves in the 2-1 victory for the Deep Freeze.

Weekly Summary:
Minneapolis wins their only game of the week 2-1 over Scottsdale.

Cosa Nostra

Chicago Cosa Nostra

Weekly Preview:
Chicago has two more home games, making it six in a row to start the season off at home. Division Rival Wausau comes in for the first one, followed by the Bathgate Rangers before the Cosa Nostra head out for two against Brentwood & Lakeland.
Game #1:

Chicago gets out shot 35-33, and kept it close for a solid game, but only put 2 in the back of the Lumberjacks net. Wausau scored 3 even strength goals & 1 shorthanded.

Star 1: WLJ Chara 1 G, 2 Pts (Including the shorthander)
Star 2: WLJ Smith 31 saves
Star 3: WLJ Brown 1 G

GWG: Claude Giroux

Notables: WLJ Smith,M 31 saves, CHI Parayko 5 blocks, Mrazek 31 saves

Final Score: Wausau 4 – Chicago 2

Game #2:

Bathgate comes into the Capone Center & Chicago takes it to them. The Cosa Nostra get 2 Power Play Goals less than a minute & a half apart early in the 2nd period & tack on 3 more even strength goals during the 5 goal second period. That’s all the Cosa Nostra would need to pick up the win.

Star 1: CHI Duclair 2 G
Star 2: CHI Zetterberg 1 G, 2 Pts
Star 3: BGR Staal 1 G, 2 Pts

GWG: Chris Kreider

Notables: CHI Krug 3 assists

Final Score: Chicago 5 – Bathgate 3

Weekly Summary:
Chicago ends the 6 game home stand with a 3-3 record, but in the eyes of head coach Doug Gilmour they have a long way to go.

Defenders

Alamo Defenders

Weekly Preview:
The Corktown Suds come to Crockett Arena to take on the Defenders. Alamo comes in with a 2-2 record.
Game #1:  Corktown Suds at Alamo Defenders

Chad Johnson is the star of the game, as he stones the Defenders until late in the game. Alamo outshoots Corktown, 13-9 in the first period. But, at 11:19, Jack Eichel scores his first goal for the Suds to put them up, 1-0.

In the second period, Santorelli scores his 2nd goal and Stone provides the assist. Corktown is up 2-0 after 2.

In the third period, at 1849, the Defenders cash in on a power play, and Pacioretty scores his 2nd goal of the year. The Defenders pull the goal and put on a flurry of shots, but fall short.

Shots on goal: Corktown 30, Alamo 29.

Hits: Corktown wins this battle – 39-25.

Corktown spends a lot of time on the power play, and goes 0 for 6. Boychuck was called for a 4 minute penalty in the 3rd. Alamo goes 1 for 3.

Disappointing game for Alamo as they seemed to be a little intimidated, particularly in the 2nd period.

3 stars – all for Corktown
1. Johnson
2. Eichel
3. Santorelli

Corktown 2 Alamo 1

Weekly Summary:
Only game played in Alamo:
Corktown 2 Alamo 1
Johnson with a great game in the goal for the Suds.

Mullets

Jagr Mullets

Weekly Preview:
After hosting only 1 game the first week, Jagr gets busy with 3 home games.
Game #1:

Indiana comes to town, and surrenders two goals in the first period – 2 minutes in an even strength goal to Bonino (3), assisted by Stralman (3). Then at 19:49 Stamkos pots a PPG (3) with an assist by Pavelski (7).

Indiana makes it a game though in the 2nd, as Davidson scores his first 4 minutes in to make it 2-1. The Sycamores kept the pressure on the rest of the game, but Ben Bishop stood tall and denied them time and time again as Jagr wins 2-1.

Game #2:

Next up is Alamo. I don’t think Davy Crockett could have helped, as Jagr shuts them out 4-0 behind Ben Bishop. Goal scorers were Stamkos, Hagelin, Bonino, and Bailey.

The Mullet defense (known by fans as “The Perm”) was totally activated as they only allowed 3 scoring chances the entire game to Alamo.

Game #3:  The third and final game was definitely the toughest. Unlike the other two teams, Lansing did not allow Jagr to jump out to an early lead and let Ben Bishop shut the game down.

But in the 2nd period, Jagr breaks through a goal by Braun (his 1st) at 2:23. Early in the 3rd, Pavelski (2) pots an even strength unassisted goal at 3:06.

Lansing hangs in there though, and strikes less than 2 minutes later, as Anisimov beats Bishop. Midway through the 3rd, Jagr faces their first 5-on-3 power play. We are able to kill off the first penalty, but Drew Stafford punches one home at 12:34 to tie it up 2-2.

Jagr keeps the heat on Dubnyk in the OT, but can’t put one in… so it’s a SHOOTOUT!

Bishop stands tall, while the first two Mullet shooters (Pavelski and Stamkos) tickle the twine to win the game 3-2 and provide the fans with a wonderful home stand.

Weekly Summary:
Jagr goes 3-0, but if they can’t stay out of the penalty box there will be trouble.

Regulators

California Regulators

Game #1:

California jumps to a big lead through the 2nd, scoring 5 unanswered goals. Hampton scores one at 19:29 in the 2nd and 18:58 in the 3rd to make it 5-2.

Star 1 – CAL – Reinhart, 1 G, 2 Pt

Star 2 – CAL – Holtby, 37 SV

Star 3 – CAL – Beauchemin, 1 G, 2 Pt

CAL – 5 / HAM – 2

Weekly Summary:
1-0 for the Regulators at home this week.

FlyingTigers

Lakeland Flying Tigers

Weekly Preview:
Lakeland had 3 home games this block and I knew I had to take advantage of a fast start.
Game #1:

Columbus 4 @ Lakeland 5

It was a shooting gallery for both teams. Lakeland holds off a late push and barely holds on for the win.

1 Star – Henrique 1G, 2Pts.
2 Star – Ristolainen 1G, 2Pts.
3 Star – Oshie 1G

Game #2:

Wausau 6 @ Lakeland 3

Lakeland outplays Wausau in almost all stat categories except for the goals scored. Quick can’t stop anything and see his GAA soar.

1 Star – Zuccarello 2G
2 Star – Palat 1G, 2Pts.
3 Star – Giroux 3A

Game #3:

Chicago 2 @ Lakeland 5

Lakeland plays like a team possessed and leads in almost all stat categories.

1 Star – Weise 1G
2 Star – Henrique 1G
3 Star – Spezza 1G

Game #4:
Weekly Summary:

Lakeland goes 2-1-0 at home. Was hoping for all three, but some is better than none.

Ladd leads the team in scoring for the block 0G-6A, but we would like to see him score a goal once in a while.

Blizzard

Hampton Blizzard

Weekly Preview:
After opening the season with a pretty dismal winless four-game homestand the Hampton Blizzard take home ice just once in Week 2 against the Minneapolis Deep Freeze.
Game #1:  In a spinoff of the old 60s song What a Difference a Hot Goalie Makes.
Hampton’s Brian Elliott was hot, Minnie’s Cam Ward was not.
Elliott walled off 34 of 35 shots while Ward was a tad sievelike in the first period allowing four goals on 11 shots by Hampton with the Blizzard skating off to a welcome and probably rare 6-1 win over the Deep Freeze.
Andre Burakovsky opened the scoring four minutes into the game on a 3-2 rush that resulted from a turnover at mid-ice. Burakovsky one-timed a pass through the slot by Andrew Shaw over the glove of the Deep Freeze netminder.
Some steady end-to-end action followed throughout the period with Braydon Schenn drawing the teams even at the 16-minute mark with a nifty deke backhand goal following a nice give-and-go with Ryan Getzlaf.
About 90 seconds later, Vincent Trocheck won the draw deep in the Minneapolis end and drew the puck back to Mike Ribeiro who took it into the corner and then passed out front to the waiting stick of Jamie McGinn who dinged it home through the pads of the Deep Freeze goaltender to make it 2-1 Hampton.
Another mid-ice turnover by Minneapolis only a minute later set up the next Hampton goal when Ribeiro was again in on the scoring action this time banking home a rebound off Trocheck’s wrister from the top of the faceoff circle to make it 3-1.
But the Blizzard were not done yet. Half a minute later, Jason Demers fired a one-timer high over Ward’s pads and he somehow made a brilliant blocker save but the rebound fell at his skates with Patric Hornqvist’s stick just waiting to fire it home for a 4-1 lead.
Hampton was clearly out-played and outshot in the final two period by margins of 12-8 and 15-7, but Elliott was on his game and held them scoreless.
SUMMARY
First Period
1. HAM, Burakovsky 1 (Shaw, Nielsen) 4:10
2. MIN, Schenn 1 (Getzlaf) 12:19

– Hampton continues to be without a power play goal after five home games
– Minnesota outhit Hampton 40-35
– Vincent Trocheck had 3 assists in the game for Hampton and leads the team with 3 goals and 3 helpers for six points
Weekly Summary:
Hampton wins its single home game this week.

Nor'Westers

Thunder Bay Nor’Westers

Weekly Preview:
After a lackluster first week, Thunder Bay once again is home for 3 games (Minneapolis, California, Hampton). Our 1-3 start was not what the fans expected and we cannot afford to bury ourselves deeper in the standing this early in the season.
Game #1:
Minneapolis (3) Thunder Bay (4) a much needed win. The Nor’westers 2nd defensive pair of DeKeyser and the rookie Slavin played well and Barkov netted goal #3 on the season. Three goals in the 1st period lead the way, but closer inspection showed some poor play on two of the Thunder Bay lines.
Game #2:

California (5) Thunder Bay (3) Reimer gets lit up like a Christmas Santa allowing 4 goals. The final Caly goal was an empty netter. Saad scored goal #3 and Eberle and O’Reilly both scored their 2nd goals of the season.

O’Reilly has been outstanding in the face-off circle and in general our offense has been ok, but our defensive play has been subpar.

Game #3:
Hampton (4) Thunder Bay (3) Out scored again. Korpisalo has not looked good in goal in his 2 starts Fischer has to be hoping Mason will be ready to play soon. Barkov and Saad roll on both scoring their 4th goals of the season.
Weekly Summary:
Another 1-2 homestand. Our offense has been scoring enough to be ok but defensively the Nor’westers have been weak night in and night out some changes need to be make and quickly.
DeKeyser and Slavin need to get some more ice time and the third pairing of Maatta and Jones has not jelled at all. Look for Jones to have a new partner.

IceDogs

Long Beach Ice Dogs

Weekly Preview:
An early season game between 2 teams off to good starts as Indiana (4-0) visits Long Beach (3-1).
Game #1:
Indiana scored the first goal of the game on a Foliano wrister for his first goal of the season. They increased the lead to 2-0 with 12 minutes to go in the period when Kulemin scored his second goal of the season. Streit pushed the lead to 3-0 with a power play goal in the 2nd period. That was the final score as Luongo stopped all 24 Long Beach shots in recording the shutout.
Game #2:
Long Beach broke a scoreless tie on a Bjugstad goal early in the second period. After Alamo tied it with 5 minutes to go, Teravainen scored a power play goal with 1 minute to play to give Long Beach a 2-1 win.
Game #3:
Long Beach took a 2-0 lead early in the second period and added an empty netter to seal the 3-1 win.
Weekly Summary:
Long Beach win 2 of their 3 home games.

Rangers

Bathgate Rangers

Weekly Preview:
Bathgate had a surprising start to the season (3-0-1) can they keep it up. This week they get two home games hosting California (the place with way to much regulation) and Hampton.
Game #1:
Well the Regulators of California stormed into Madison Round Garden and quickly tried to find ways to change things. Along the way they scored 4 goals – 2 Power Play goals, a short-handed goal and for good measure Ovechkin scored and even strength goal. Final 4-1 California
Stars:
1. Packard (34 saves)
2. Ovechkin 1 Goal
3. Carr 1 Goal
Game #2:  If the drubbing by the Regulators wasn’t enough, the Blizzard blew into town and buried the Rangers in so much snow they didn’t know what to think (or do). Certainly they didn’t play any hockey.
Hampton scored 3 times in the 1st period, liked it so much, they added 3 more in the 2nd period – all even strength. By the 3rd period backup goalie Hutton was pulled and McElhinney was WAY BETTER – only gave up 1 goal in the 3rd. All 7 Hampton goals preceded the lone Ranger goal, scored at 17.55 to breakup the shut out attempt by Elliot. Final Hampton 7 Bathgate 1.
Stars:
1. Nielsen 2 Goals, 3 Points
2. Burakovsky, 1 G, 3 Points
3. Backlund 1 G, 2 Points
Notable – Hertl with 3 assists and Elliot with 35 saves.
Weekly Summary:
Bathgate returns quickly to earth and drops their 2 home games this week (and they weren’t pretty).

Bandits

Brentwood Bandits

Weekly Preview:
Brentwood hopes to change things up from their disappointing 1-2 homestand to start the season. Wausau, Chicago, and Bathgate all come to town to try to test the Bandits to see what they are really made of.
Game #1:

Wausau Lumberjacks come to The Hallow to challenge Sidney Crosby and the Bandits.

Goalies are Fleury for the Bandits and Smith for the Lumberjacks

Period 1
The Bandits come out gunning as they score the first goal of the game just 17 seconds into the contest when Patrick Marleau re-directs a shot from Ekman-Larsson after a beautiful pass from Malkin to set it all up. Bandits up 1-0

Sidney Crosby scores on a wrister from the slot. Assists by Bieksa and Malkin.

Period 2
Ekman-Larsson makes it 3-0 with a PP goal at 3:17 of the 2nd. Assisted by Baertschi and Fehr

Fisher scores on a rebound at 7:11 to bring Wausau within 2. Assists by Keith and Niskanen

Less than two minutes later at 9:08, Sid the Kid makes it 4-1 with his second of the game assisted by P.A. Parenteau “Trap” and Malkin (his 3rd helped of the game)

Period 3
3:09 P(ain in the) A(ss) Parenteau rips one by Smith to make it 5-1. Assists by Baertschi and Fiddler.

Claude “Don’t touch my bum” Giroux cuts into the Bandit lead at 7:05. Assisted by Zucker.

Even though Wausau fights off a 5 minute major from Zucker, it wouldn’t be enough as Brentwood goes on to win 5-2.

Star 1 – Crosby 2G
Star 2 – Parenteau 1G, 1A
Star 3 – Ekman-Larsson 1G, 1A

Fleury saves 30 of 32
Smith saves 30 of 35

Game #2: Chicago comes to The Hallow for the first meeting between the two teams.

Lundqvist vs Bernier in the nets tonight

Period 1
8:12 Hainsey scores on a blistering slapper from the point. Assisted by Crosby and Marleau

Crosby scores on the PP at 12:45. Assists by Malkin and Ekman-Larsson

Chicago scores less than 2 minutes later when Parayko scores on a redirect against Lundqvist to cut the lead in half. The score would stand til the end of the period.

Period 2
Brentwood breaks it open with 3 goals and chases Bernier from net:
1:21 Fiddler from LIles and Baertschi
2:55 Liles from Bieksa and Lundqvist
9:42 Crosby from Ekman-Larsson and Hainsey
Condon replaces Bernier and shuts down Brentwood for the remainder of the 2nd period. But…

Period 3
Brentwood is already up big, but adds two more to their tally as Liles completes the Hat Trick from the blue line!

Final score Brentwood 7, Chicago 1

Star 1 – Liles 3G, 1A
Star 2 – Crosby 2G, 1A
Star 3 – Lundqvist 32 saves

Bernier saves 13 of 18 and Condon saves 19 of 21 in relief.

Notable – Matt Martin collects 10 hits.

Game #3: Bathgate comes to town with their high powered offense and doesn’t disappoint.

The big story here is goaltending. Bathgate had it and Brentwood didn’t.

Period 1
Donskoi scores from in front of the net on Fleury at 6:44. Assists by Karlsson and Russel

Hainsey makes it a game, albeit a false hope, 2 minutes later at 8:44. Assists by Parenteau and Baertschi

Fontaine rounded out the scoring of the 1st period with an unassisted breakaway goal after a turnover.

Period 2
Kane on the PP from Stoll and Benn

Zajac assisted by Karlsson and Russell and Tom Atkins replaces Fleury with Lundqvist. Wouldn’t make much of a difference.

Gigensons assisted by Donskoi and Karlsson.

Parenteau tried his best to get his team back into it cutting the lead to three (5-2) but it wouldn’t last.

A minute and half later Karlsson scores on a slapper from the point assisted by Kane and Benn on the PP.

Period 3
Gaustad scores the lone 3rd period goal at 5:29 assisted by Jaskin… but not for lack of trying by the Bandits as they fired a total of 41 shots at Pekka Rinne who turned 39 away.

The bad news for the Bandits is that their goaltending was terrible as Bathgate only managed 17 shots all night, but scored SEVEN GOALS on those shots!!!

Was this an anomaly? Maybe… but we think maybe Al Montoya might be playing in the near future and one of these two starting goalies will be shipped off to someone who needs one soon.

Anyway… final score Bathgate 7, Brentwood 2

Star 1 – Karlsson 1G, 3A
Star 2 – Kane 1G, 1A
Star 3 – Donskoi 1G, 1A

Notables – Karlsson 3 assists, Russell 5 blocks, Rinne 39 saves.

I feel Rinne should have been one of the 3 stars but what do I know!

Weekly Summary:
Two great games by the Bandits and one stinker! Hoping that one horrendous game is the exception and not the rule. This team is still trying to find it’s identity, but they sure are entertaining and fun to watch!

Chiefs

Second City Chiefs

Game #1:

Chiefs welcome in the Ripon Rockets to the Westside Wigwam. The home side jumps out to a 3-0 lead in the first on a goal from Hayes and a pair of goals from the captain Tavares.

The Rockets answer with the next two goals to start the second and cut the lead to 3-2. Tavares answers back with his third goal of the game just 13 seconds later.

The Rockets get a goal early in the third but the Chiefs are able to hold on for their first home victory, 4-3.

Game #2:  Next up is Wausau coming to the Wigwam. The home team strikes first with Panarin getting his first of the year from Tavares and Palmieri.
With Chara in the box for a five minute major, Jimmy Hayes puts in a rebound to make it 2-0 Chiefs. But just seconds later its the Lumberjacks with a short handed goal off a breakaway to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Lumberjacks get three power play chances in the 2nd, including a four minute opportunity, but cannot score. 2-1 Chiefs after two.
Five minutes into the third with the Chiefs on the power play, another short handed goal for the visitors as Kopitar ties it up.
Right after going to the box for two minutes, Hayes comes out and re-directs a Brooks Laich shot into the twine for his second of the game to take back the lead for Second City.
Then shortly after killing another penalty, the Chiefs add on with MacKinnon getting the deflection off the Letang shot from the point. 4-2 Chiefs.
Then with just under 3 minutes to play it’s Kopitar again for Wausau to cut the deficit to one.
With 20 seconds left its Gostisbehere with the shot from the point to seal the deal for Second City who win their second straight home game 5-3.
Weekly Summary:
Second City follows up their brutal first week by salvaging a couple of home wins in week two. Denis Savard’s boys showing a little bit of life.
