Bathgate Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers trying to dig themselves out of the 1st week hole – hangover from all those Stanley Cups. This week they have 1 home game against what seems like the Juggernaut Jagr Mullets!
GAME #1: JAGR MULLETS@ BATHGATE RANGERS Who knew a minute into the game as Matthews scores the opening goal for Jagr, that he was on his way to a team natural hat trick. His goal in the 1st was the only score in the period, but then the Rangers seemed to be taking charge as first Panarin (unassisted) and Tatar score within the opening 7 minutes of the 2nd period and grab a 2-1 lead.

But then we get back to Matthews and just over a minute after the Rangers gained the lead, Matthews scores his 2nd of the game to tie it up. And in one of those things you just hate to see – Matthews scores again (hat trick) with just 6 SECONDS LEFT in the 2nd to give Jagr the 3-2 lead going into the 2nd intermission.

3rd period the Mulletts go on the defensive, conservative attacks and relentless D. Rangers however, still work to poor it on, 11 shots – but minimal scoring chances and rebounds so we get down the final minute still sitting at 3-2 Jagr. Then the Rangers bring on the extra attacker – and GOAL!!! However, it was an empty netter for Svechnikov (he factors on all 4 Jagr goals) and the Mullets skate out of town with the 4-2 win.

STARS (all JAG)
1. Surprise – it’s Matthews with his hat trick – 3 goals
2. Svechnikov 1 goal, 3 assists!
3. Markstrom – 31 saves.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Rangers still looking for their magic to gel – if they wait much longer, it may be too late to pull the end of season charge!! 1 game, 1 loss to Jagr!
LA Great Danes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: A single home game this week versus Chicago, with 3 divisional road games to follow.
GAME #1: CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA@ LA GREAT DANES Early on, it’s all LA and Chicago does not register a shot until 8 minutes in. Then the Cosa Nosa take back-to-back penalties, but the Danes power play is anemic with 1 shot total for the 2 power plays. Then Werenski is called for a double-minor high sticking penalty. Once again no SOG for LA the first 2 minutes of the PP, but seconds after the first Werenski penalty expires, Barkov beats Saros – it’s a power play goal and LA is up 1-0 after 1.

After 4 penalties in the first period, Chicago settles down in the second, and we remain at 1-0 until Nico Hischier extends the leads to 2-0 with 5 minutes left in the second. The Danes take a late penalty, their first of the game, in the final minute of the period. Brayden McNabb is so shocked by the tripping call that he is given a 10-minute misconduct on top of that for not leaving the ice!

In the third, LA has to kill of the remainder of McNabb’s penalty as well as taking two additional minors in the early to mid part of the period. All LA minors were by defensemen, and with McNabb in the box for his misconduct, the Danes defense is short-handed and has to step up. Along with LA’s top PK forwards, they do and Chicago comes away empty on the power plays. After 4 one-goal games last week, it would have been nice to extend the lead, but the Danes play solid D the rest of the way and come away with the 2-0 victory.

Chicago has 13 SOG in the 3rd, but only 24 for the game, and Igor Shesterkin stops them all for his first shutout of the season. Scoring chances were 20-1 in favor of LA for the game, and Juuse Saros with 32 saves kept Chicago in the game.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A very solid effort at home, it looks like the Great Danes will be playing lots of close games this season.
Gilbert Sharks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 2 Home games this week versus LA and Jagr
GAME #1: LA GREAT DANES@ GILBERT SHARKS Defense and Goaltending was great on both sides in this one with the first goal of the game not coming until late in the 2nd period when Mike Reilly gets Gilbert on the board. Matt Duchene extends the Gilbert lead with under 3 minutes to go and the final score is 2-0. Vitek Vanecek gets the shutout in goal for Gilbert

————————————————————————

GAME #2: JAGR MULLETS@ GILBERT SHARKS Vanecek again is in goal for this one and again we have a scoreless first period. Gibert gets going early in the 2nd with quick goals from Duchene and Erik Haula. Nino Niederriter adds another goal later in the 2nd period and it is more than enough for Vanecek who just gives up one goal in the 3rd to Elias Lindholm. 3-1 Sharks win
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 2 home games, 2 wins. Jarry was supposed to be the better goalie for the Sharks but so far it has been Vanecek that has been impressive
Alamo Defenders
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Alamo takes on LA and Gilbert
GAME #1: LA GREAT DANES@ ALAMO DEFENDERS The Great Danes travel to Alamo and play well. In fact, both teams play great defense and there is no score in regulation. In OT, Barkov scores his 4th for LA, and LA wins the game.

LA 1 Alamo 0 (OT)

1-Shesterkin
2-Barkov
3-Nylander

GAME #2: GILBERT SHARKS@ ALAMO DEFENDERS Alamo leads 3-1 almost midway through the 3rd, but the Sharks strike twice to send the game into OT. Former Defender Stamkos scores as does Gourde. In OT, Thompson scores and the Sharks win the game.

Gilbert 4 Alamo 3

1-Draisaitl -Alamo
2-Stamkos
3-Thompson

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Tough week for the Defenders. They lose in OT to LA and blow a 3rd period lead and lose to Gilbert.
Brentwood Bandits
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Three home games for the Bandits at The Hideout. Two of them are against divisional opponents.
GAME #1: BATHGATE RANGERS@ BRENTWOOD BANDITS One of our biggest rivals. The CapJack Rangers, back to back champs, come to town.

1st Period – Terry (4) continues to be an early bright spot on the top line scoring on the PP… 1-0.

2nd Period – Kreider (2) makes it 1-1 only 36 seconds into the period! Goodrow (1) adds a short handed goal to make it 2-1 Rangers!

3rd Period – JVR (2) ties it 2-2!!

OT – 15 seconds into OT, Kopitar (2) wins it and sends the crowd home happy!!

Bathgate only manages 17 SOG.

GAME #2: PITTSBURGH MINERS@ BRENTWOOD BANDITS Pittsburgh travels a few miles south to Brentwood, PA. The Miners are a way better team than they were last season and are off to a hot start.

1st Period – Norris (4) scores on the PP to givet he Miners a 1-0 lead!

2nd Period – Caufield (3), Roslovic (1), and Terry (5) all score in the period to make it 3-1 Bandits!!

3rd Period – Brodie (1) puts the game further out of reach for the Miners, 4-1 Bandits!

And that’s where it would end!

Vasilevskiy makes 31 saves in his best start of the season.

GAME #3: FLIN FLON BOMBERS@ BRENTWOOD BANDITS Flin Flon comes to town as the Atlantic division leaders.

A high scoring affair!

2-2 after the first period. Hughes (5) and Duclair (1) score for the Bombers while Terry (6) and Doughty (3) score for the Bandits

2nd Period – Eriksson Ek scores twice (1, 2) and Moore (1) scores for the Bandits. It is now 4-3 Bombers!

3rd Period – Terry (7), Doughty (4), and Josi (1) make it 6-4 Bandits!! But Landeskog (2) and Bjorkstrand (1) tie it up 6-6!!

In Overtime, with 6 seconds left… Terry (8) completes the Hat Trick to win the game for the Bandits, 7-6!!

What a game!!

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Three games, three wins! We will take that every week! 😉

Terry is showing to be the best pickup in the Auction Draft for the Bandits!

Chicago Cosa Nostra
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Chicago gets 1 home game at the Capone Center this segment. Fans are excited about the Cosa Nostra this year. Will it last, or will they just be an example of how not to build a Hockey Club for the rest of the year?
GAME #1: TOLEDO WALLEYE@ CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA Chicago grabs an early lead midway through the 1st period & holds on through the 2nd. In the 3rd The Walleye tie it up, but Chicago scored less than a minute later to once again take the lead. Two empty netters in the last minute of play make the game look like it was an easy win, but in all reality, it was a 2-1 win, in a close-knit battle between Division Rivals.

Final Score: Chicago 4 – Toledo 1

Labatts 3-Star Selection:
Star 1: CHI – Jordon Kyrou 2G, 3Pts
Star 2: CHI – Juuse Saros 34 Saves

Bucks County Bobcats
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Bucks County with 3 home games to get back on track in the early season….
GAME #1: GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS@ BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS Grosse Pointe jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the game on goals by Monahan and Skjei only to see BC score three times in a five minute stretch to take a 3-2 lead. Strome scored for the Bobcats to extend the lead to 4-2 only to see Rantanen score with 6 minutes left to cut the deficit to one, but Bucks County held on and came away with a 4-3 victory.
GAME #2: CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA@ BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS In a game that was virtually even in all statistical categories, it was no surprise the game went to OT with DeBrincat scoring with just over a minute left in the extra session and Chicago defeated Bucks County 2-1. The Bobcats received a lottery ticket where if you scratch off two of the same numbers you get a charity point and Conner McDavid yelled bingo, we got the point. So there is that….
GAME #3: TOLEDO WALLEYE@ BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS Bucks County jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st period only to have Toledo eventually tie the game at 11:20 of the 3rd period. Nick Suzuki deflected a point shot from Kylington with 4:40 left in regulation and Bucks County held on to defeat Toledo 4-3.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 5 out of 6 possible points for BCB rights the ship in the early going…..
Jagr Mullets

Grosse Pointe Griffins
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 3 home games against Toledo, Chicago, and Cincinnati
GAME #1: TOLEDO WALLEYE@ GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS The Walleye make the trip up northbound I-75 to Grosse Pointe to take on the Griffins. Veteran Jonathan Bernier gets the call to start in goal for the home squad while Anthony Stolarz is the starter for Toldeo. Veteran Bernier makes 34 stops and rookie Mason Raymond scores twice in the Griffins’ 5-3 victory. Evegny Kuznetsov broke a 2-2 tie at 12:32 of the third period and then Derek Forbort added an empty-netter. Stolarz faced only 24 SOG.
GAME #2: CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA@ GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS Grosse Pointe’s Ilya Samsonov made 40 saves, but in the end, it was the Cosa Nostra that took a 3-2 shootout win. “The Cat” and rookie Lundell got the Chicago regulation markers, while Brady Skjei and Sean Monahan each picked up their first goals of the season for the Griffins. In the shootout, Chicago’s Swayman didn’t allow a score, while Larkin and Kyrou bested Samsonov.
GAME #3: CINCINNATI INFERNO@ GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS Another bitter, tough loss for Grosse Pointe by a score of 3-2 to the Inferno. Grosse Pointe outshot Cincinnati by a resounding 41-11 margin but Cam Talbot put on a goaltending clinic. Trailing 2-1 with time running down, Sterling Heights, Michigan native Kyle Connor brought the Griffins even at 18:52. But just as it looked like overtime was inevitable, the visitor’s Andrew Copp pushed a loose puck past Samsonov with SIX SECONDS to go in regulation to give the Inferno a 3-2 win!
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The disappointing start continues as Grosse Pointe goes 1-1-1. Who wants to deal a goalie??
Charlotte Buzzards
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Buzzards were off to a sluggish start entering its second week of play with a record of 1-3. What is working: this team was built with a defensive foundation in mind and that was evident as the Buzzards climbed quickly to the top of the league ratings defensively. What’s not working: Charlotte features a balanced offensive attack with seven 25-goal scorers in the lineup (including Alex Ovechkin and his 50Gs) – yet it only had five goals in four games played prior to this week of play, with one home game on the slate against division rival Portland.
GAME #1: PORTLAND STORM@ CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS Charlotte’s offensive woes actually deteriorated against the Storm from a goals per game standpoint. The Buzzards continued their early-season slumber and were shut out, 3-0, in atrociously embarrassing fashion against a division opponent that demonstrated a stronger will to win.

The Buzzards outshot Portland 37-19 but were 0 and 4 on the power play and the scoring draught continued for Ovechkin (zero points in four games last week). He had five shots in this contest all for naught.

Portland goalie Jake Oettinger carried the team on his back to the tune of 37 saves, good for the shutout and first star honors.

The Storm attained the only goal it would need, and cashed in on the power play where Charlotte had failed. It broke a scoreless tie with 1:19 to play in the first period. Following a Mikhael Backlund tripping penalty, defenseman Sean Durzi found the net on assists by Joel Farabee and Rickard Rakell.

Farabee scored his own goal (unassisted)l 4:44 into the second period and Portland added an empty netter with 51 seconds left in the game, courtesy of Jesse Puljujarvi.

Oettinger stopped 13 shots in the first period and 16 in the second, that seemed to break the Buzzards’ will.

Three stars (all from Portland)
Star 1: Oettinger 37 saves
Star 2: Farabee 1 G, 2 Pts
Star 3: Puljujarvi, 1 empty net goal

Notable: Oettinger outplayed Ilya Sorkin (16 saves and 2 goals allowed). Ryan Johansen was moved to top-line center by Charlotte in an effort to jump start Ovechkin. He won 17 faceoffs, but that failed to ignite the Buzzards’ first-line attack and despite all those faceoff wins, he finished with a plus/minus of negative 1. Portland blocked an astonishing 21 shots with Portland’s six blue-liners getting 14 of those (each defenseman was credited with at least one blocked shot).

WEEKLY SUMMARY: “May Day, May Day!” comes to mind. Buffalo Sabres announcer Rick Jeaneret’s legend only grew with that call and this Charlotte team desperately needs an SOS on offense (Brad May probably wouldn’t hurt either the way these forwards have stunk up the joint). The Buzzards continue looking lifeless at the beginning of this season in a listless shutout to a better Storm squad.

GAME #1: BATHGATE RANGERS@ PORTLAND STORM Portland gets a goal from Puljujarvi (2) 18 seconds into the game getting the home crowd on their feet but Hertl (2) silenses them 5 seconds later on a goal.

The 2nd period was quiet until Olofsson (3) gives Portland a 2-1 lead at the 15:11 mark on a power play goal

In the 3rd period Portland extends the lead 3-1 when Dunn (1) scores 31 seconds into the period. Bathgate fought back and Lee (1) brings them to within 1 at the 10:42 mark. Portland was able to withhold the Rangers off until a crucial interference call gave Bathgate a power play and Kreider (2) tied the game up with 2:17 remaining

In overtime Hoglander (1) sends the Portland crowd home happy when he scores at the 1:42 mark

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland gets an OT win in their lone game
