Bathgate Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers have been off to a poor start in defense of something and they are 1-2 at home. This week at practice they shook things up a bit in their line assignments , can’t get any worse!
GAME #1: LA GREAT DANES@ BATHGATE RANGERS The Pacific leading Great Danes, off to a 6-2 start, grace the Garden and they will find it very tough sledding. Strome starts the scoring with his 1st of the game 2 1/2 minutes in. Then just past midway in the 2nd, he gets his 2nd goal! 24 seconds later however, Staal gets his 1st of the year and the Danes are right back in it trailing just 2-1. So – what does Strome do, 27 seconds later he scores again for a HAT TRICK and a 3-1 Rangers lead. Then a minute and 10 seconds later they make it 4-1 when Panarin scores on the hat trick. That was a total of 4 goals in 2 minutes and 4 seconds. The Announcer hadn’t even announce the 1st goal by the time the 4th one was scored.

So we move the 3rd period and LA is not going away or giving up, firing 17 shots in the period and 2 minutes in Hintz scores making it 4-2 Bathgate. But Reimer was holding firm as the shots were pummeling him and when Nylander goes off for hooking near the midpoint of the period, Bathgate and Zibanejad make them pay as he scores sending the final tally to 5-2 Rangers! Maybe those line adjustments were what was needed?

STARS – (All BGR)
1. Strome 3 goals
2. Zibanejad 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Reimer 36 saves
A lot of sore Rangers as they blocked 22 of the 73 shot attempts made by LA.

GAME #2: BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS@ BATHGATE RANGERS UrrROUW – Can you hear those Bobcats? They arrive still smarting from a couple of years ago – interesting week as the Rangers host their last 2 years Stanley Cup opponents back to back.

Opening period sees Bucks County’s Muzzin and Nosek each taking 4 minute minors – Muzzin 4 minutes in and Nosek with 2 1/2 to go. During Muzzin’s penalties the combo of Kreider, Panarin and Zibanejad combine twice – Kreider getting both of them to make it 2-0 Rangers 7 minutes into the game. Then Buchnevich scored an unassisted, even strength goal) midway through the period and it wasn’t looking god for the visitors. But Hyman gets the Bobcats on the board scoring with 3 to go and cutting the lead to 3-1 Rangers. But then during 2nd half of Nosek’s penalty, the Rangers #2 PP line scores as Hertl puts it past Campbell.

We move to the 2nd period and Bucks County works to control the game and Bathgate works to keep them in check. Bobcats get a lot of shots off and 8 minutes in Suzuki grabs a loose puck gets into the Rangers end, shoots and scores making it 4-2 Rangers, the comeback happening? Well if so, it’s going to be harder as Tavares gets the goal back, scoring for the Rangers 5 minutes later and the 2nd period ends with the Rangers in control, 5-2.

Then a minute and a half into the 3rd Panarin scores making it 6-2. That did light a fire on the Bucks County bench and they throw everything they can at Bathgate – 21 shots ping off Reimer – well 20, one of the SOGs goes in when Hyman scores his 2nd of the game on a PP and that make it 6-3 Rangers and that’s the final! Bucks County had the SOG lead 37-20, but not the scoring chances, that was almost dead even with the Rangers managing 16 to 15.

STARS
1. BGR – Panarin 1 goal 3 assists
2. BGR – Kreider 2 goals
3. BCB – Hyman 2 goals

GAME #3: CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA@ BATHGATE RANGERS One of the games in the annual Commissioner’s Cup series as Chicago visits the Rangers. Chicago has the early Central division lead and a very stingy defense giving up 2.5 goals a game early on.

And then in the 1st they are golden, nothing wrong on offense or defense and they outshoot the Rangers 15-9 and more importantly they outscore them! Larkin scores just as the midpoint approaches and then Sundqvist gets the goals you really hate (as the defender) when he makes it 2-0 with 6 seconds left in the period beating Francouz top shelf! UGH. Both goals were set up by former Ranger Tony DeAngelo!

Off to the locker room for adjustments – 1 team made them well and it was the home team. First Lee scores to cut the Chicago lead to 2-1 6 minutes in. The Zibanejad deflects a Kreider shot to to tie it up with 8 to go and the Ryan Strome and his 4th line score a minute and a half later to put Bathgate in the lead, 3-2. That was the score as they go to the locker rooms for the 2nd intermission.

Again it’s the Rangers who come out with the edge in the 3rd aided by a Larkin* cross checking penalty and Kreider scores on a nifty wraparound 40 seconds into the period for a PP goal. 4-2 Rangers. Then with 7 1/2 to go Zibanejad feeds Kreider with a slick pass – shoots – scores and it’s 5-2 Bathgate and that was it, Rangers hang on to win it big, 5-2.
Rangers won or shared pretty much all the statistical categories for this one and stopped both PP opportunities by the Cosa Nostra.
* Larkin was guilty on 3 penalties – Charging, Cross checking and slashing!!

STARS (all BGR)
1. Kreider 2 goals 1 assist
2. Zibanejad 1 goal 1 assist
3. Lee 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Well things changed this week for the Rangers – could be the adjustments, could be the opponents, could be a fluke! But they will need to keep this kind of play going if they are going to have any chance in the Metropolitan division this year – but then again, they’ve never won the division!!
LA Great Danes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Talk about extremes – after 2 weeks the Great Danes are dead last in the MWHL with just 18 goals in 8 games and a 6.9% shooting %. So how does LA have a 6-2-0 record in these 2 weeks?

It’s been the Aleksander Barkov and Igor Shesterkin show. Without much help, Barkov’s 9 points account for 50% of the team’s goals and 3 of his 6 goals have been game winners. As far as Shesterkin, his week 2 stat line says it all – 0.33 GAA, 100 saves, 1 GA, 2 shutouts. Talk about dominating!!

Beyond this, a team faceoff win % of 62% and a 100% PK rate point to a team built to defend. But can the level of defense and goaltending be sustained and can this team score enough?

GAME #1: PITTSBURGH MINERS@ LA GREAT DANES Never mind a game’s worth, the Danes net a couple of games worth of goals in the first period. Barbashev, Benn, Hintz, and Benn again score for LA, while Kotkianemi scores for Pittsburgh on a breakaway, and LA leaves period 1 with an unheard of 3 goal lead after one.

Over the final 2 periods, LA gets back to its defensive identity and limits Pittsburgh to 6 shots per period. Roope Hintz scores his 2nd of the game in the 2nd period, and Jesper Fast scores a garbage goal at the end of the game to finish off a 6-1 win.

Anton Forsberg is solid in net for LA with 19 saves on 20 shots, and the Danes get some needed depth scoring with 3 goals from the 4th liners, with Jamie Benn taking advantage of his spot in the lineup with Mark Scheifele sitting out week 3.

GAME #2: TOLEDO WALLEYE@ LA GREAT DANES Toledo is the better team in period 1 with a 17-8 shot advantage, but LA and Shesterkin kill off 3 power plays in the first. Then 15 seconds into period 2, Shesterkin shoots the puck over the glass, and the fish have their 4th straight power play. After yet another kill by LA, the Great Danes get some momentum and start piling up the scoring chances. The game’s first goal comes 32 minutes into the contest, and it’s Chandler Stephenson’s 1st goal of the season that puts LA up 1-0. Period 2 ends that way, and we go the 3rd with another low-scoring, tight game.

Toledo puts the pressure on LA in the 3rd with another 17 shots, but LA’s defense limits the scoring chances and Shesterkin continues to be there when needed. With 5 1/2 minutes to go, Barkov scores on an LA power play to extend the lead to 2-0, and end of story – another shutout for Igor (38 saves) in a 2-0 win.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Two wins at home, only 1 goal against. Shesterkin did have a bad road outing against the Rangers this week, but the team continues to ride the hot goaltending and team defense for a couple more wins.
Chicago Cosa Nostra
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Chicago with only 1 home game this week at the Capone Center. They have been playing well, but are still more of a pretender than a contender.
GAME #1: GILBERT SHARKS@ CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA Chicago scores first & last. Gilbert nets 4 in between the Undergrounds 2.

Cincinnati Inferno
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Cincinnati Inferno welcome three opponents to the Incinerator this week.
GAME #1: TOLEDO WALLEYE@ CINCINNATI INFERNO TOL 2, CIN 1

In a defensive struggle, Toledo emerges with a 2-1 in. Jason Roberston and Viktor Arvidsson collected the goals for the Walleye, while Jared McCann had the lone lamplighter for the Inferno.

GAME #2: BRENTWOOD BANDITS@ CINCINNATI INFERNO CIN 5, BWB 3

Jake DeBrusk netted a pair of goals, the last paired with Brayden Point, 55 second apart late in the third to break the 3-3 tie. The Inferno capitalized on four power play chances (in five tries), while the Bandits were one-for-six with the man-advantage.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 34 shots, while Andrei Vasilevskiy re-directed 26 shots.

GAME #3: LA GREAT DANES@ CINCINNATI INFERNO LA 3, CIN 2

Cincinnati tried to turn on the offense, outshooting LA, 44-26. The Great Danes responded by blocking 27 efforts.

Anton Forberg stopped 42 shots ijn the win. Connor Hellebuyck turned away 23 in the defeat.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Cincinnati mustered up one win during the week at home. Hopes for a good road result to keep with the early leaders.
Toledo Walleye
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Just one home game this week, and then on the road for 3. The mighty Alamo Defenders in town for one game.
GAME #1: ALAMO DEFENDERS@ TOLEDO WALLEYE Both teams overperforming defensively early, as both struggle to put up SOG’s. Finally in a flurry, Alamo with 2 goals in 26 seconds at the midway point, Zegras and Jarnkrok. Must have jolted the Walleye, as they find 2nd gear and pick up the pace. A Jarnkrok minor lets the Walleye get a chance, and Forsling converts with just seconds left in the PP to make it 2-1.

2nd period sees both teams pick up the pace with more shots. Robertson finds a few openings in the defense, and his mates find him, twice, and at halftime, the Walleye have flipped the lead over to their side 3-2. five minutes later, Alamo ties it up with a goal by Zegras. And at the end of the period, one last push by the Walleye sees a last second blast by Henrique light the lamp to make it 4-3 Toledo going to the last stanza.

Alamo cranks up the pressure in the last period, Toledo struggles to get the puck across the red line, and Alamo registers a 15-6 SOG advantage. The Walleye defense keeps most the shots easy saves , but when the goalie is pulled late, its Demko going all over the place, save after save in one of the typical last minute barrage of pucks, and he saves the game, keeping the last period scoreless, and the Fish escape with the 1 goal win.

4-3 Walleye.

1st star – Robertson 2G 3pts
2nd – Henrique 1G 2pts
3rd – Kucherov 3A

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Walleye escape a close one with a great effort by Demko and Robertson. Now three road games.
Gilbert Sharks

GAME #1: CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS@ GILBERT SHARKS The Sharks cant get anything by Ilya Sorokin who makes 27 save in a shutout. Bennett and Danault do the damage for Charlotte in a 2-0 win.
GAME #2: BATHGATE RANGERS@ GILBERT SHARKS After getting skunked versus Charlotte, Gilbert comes out hot in this one scoring 3 times in the 1st period (Zucarello, Thompson, and Tkachuk). Tristan Jarry looks great in goal and the Sharks are cruising to victory when Bathgate finally breaks through getting a goal from Hertl with 6 minutes left. 2 minutes after that Kreider and Tavares each score with 25 seconds of each other and suddenly its a whole new game at 3-3. The game goes scoreless through Overtime and to a Shootout. Jarry stops all three shooters in the shootout and Nathan Mackinnon slips one in to give Gilbert the 4-3 win
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1-1 at home this week for the Sharks
Alamo Defenders
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Alamo plays host to Grosse Pointe and Jagr this week.
GAME #1: GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS@ ALAMO DEFENDERS Alamo outscores Grosse Pointe, 3-1 in the first period. And, Alamo repeats it success by outscoring the Griffins 3-1 in the second period. Draisaitl scores twice for Alamo.

GAME #1: CALIFORNIA REGULATORS@ BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS Brock Nelson of California scores his 2nd goal of the game at 16:57 of the third period to tie the game at 3, and then Johnny Gaudreau tips in a point drive with a minute left in regulation powering the Regulators to the 4-3 win.

Charlotte Buzzards
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Entering the week with a record of 2-6, the Buzzards, even at this early juncture of the season, were facing pivotal games at home against two MWHL stalwarts from outside its division in Toledo and Pittsburgh. While the season is still young, Charlotte, currently mired in the Atlantic division basement, certainly didn’t want to lose further ground to the teams above it in the standings who are all playing solid hockey (Flin Flon, Portland and Cincinnati).
GAME #1: TOLEDO WALLEYE@ CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS Charlotte, which came into the contest against Toledo struggling mightily offensively, with only 20 goals in nine games, needed an early spark. It got it following a tripping penalty from the Walleye’s Vince Trocheck just 1:14 into the contest. The Buzzards went on the power play and cashed in 35 seconds later when Ryan Johansen scored off an assist from Jonathan Marchessault and Alex Ovechkin.

The Walleye fired 10 shots against Ilya Sorkin but could not find the back of the net in that opening period. By contrast, the Buzzard followed up with two even strength goals later in that first, one from Alex Killorn and another from fourth-liner Blake Coleman to put Charlotte ahead 3-0 entering the first intermission.

With Toledo’s offense getting its share of shot opportunities, a comeback hardly seemed out of the realm of possibility and in the second, the Walleye fired 13 more shots on Sorokin who stonewalled them as he started to piece together his best outing of the season. And about nine minutes into the second, Charlotte, whose confidence has been shaky after early season action, got a much needed second-goal from Johansen for insurance, this one even strength, on assists from Tyler Myers and Mitch Marner. Toledo continued firing away throughout the game and had 13 more shots in the third, but Sorokin was in a zone this particular evening, and collected his first shutout of the season for a 4-0 Buzzards win.

The Walleye had better offensive numbers in numerous categories except where it counts (goals scored). It dominated the time of attack statistics (4:51 to just 1:52 by Charlotte), and outshot the Buzzards 36-22, but Sorokin shined and earned his first-star honors.

Three stars: (all Charlotte)
1. Sorokin 36 saves and the shutout
2. Johansen (two goals)
3. Killorn (one goal)

Notable: Brandon Saad leads the way for Toledo accounting for six of the Walleye 36 shots on goal. Toldeo backup netminder Anthony Stolarz yields four goals while saving 18 for the loss. The Buzzards play penalty free hockey; the Walleye only commit three penalties but Charlotte converts on the first power play on Johansen’s first goal, which proves to be the game winner.

GAME #2: PITTSBURGH MINERS@ CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS As was the case against Toledo, the Buzzards once again found lightning in a bottle with three goals in the first period against the Miners. Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo collected his second tally of the season from the point and centers Phillip Danault and Johansen added goals later in the stanza and by first intermission it was all Charlotte, 3-0. With Sorokin looking strong again, the Buzzards were looking to salt this contest away early.

But it was not to be. First, Pittsburgh forward Ryan Hartman, notched an even strength goal exactly five minutes into the second period to reduce the deficit to 3-1. Then 2:54 into the third, Miners left winger Connor Garland was the beneficiary of assists from center linemate Nazem Kadri and defenseman Shayne Gosthisbehere and suddenly the Buzzards lead was reduced to one. The Miners, with 17 shots in the third period, kept working hard and found the tying goal with just 5:40 in regulation, capitalizing on a Ryan Suter tripping penalty: Brayden Schenn shifted from right wing to center on the power play and beat Sorokin off passes from Garland and defenseman Mikael Sergachev.

Both teams seemed destined for the one point heading into overtime as both teams changed lines with 20 seconds left to play in regulation. But one last rush changed that outcome: Marchessault skated in the attacking zone and passed off to Bryan Rust who found Danault who in turn, with just six seconds left in the third, beat Sergei Bobrovsky for the game-winning goal. Pittsburgh won the ensuing faceoff with an empty net and Kazri as an extra attacker but was unable to get a shot off in the last few ticks.
The Miners which looked like a Metropolitan division contender, outshot Charlotte 36-23 as their rally effort fell just short and had two stars in the losing effort.

Three stars:
1. CHA Philip Danault 2 Goals
2. PIT Schenn 1 G, 2 Pts
3. PIT Garland 1 G 2 Pts

Notable: Sorokin recorded 33 saves for the win, his second straight at home, while Pietrangelo blocked five shots to help the Charlotte cause. The Miners got stronger with eight, 11 and 17 shots on goal respectively in the three periods and won the time of attack battle 5:47 to just 2:35 by Charlotte.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte, offensively challenged through this season (Alex Ovechkin entered the week without a goal and failed to also find the net in these two home games as the draught continues), finally awakens and breaks through with three goals in the first period of both its wins over Toledo and Pittsburgh. The Buzzards, after tinkering with three starting goalies in this early juncture of the season, finally hand over the keys in these two home games to its top netminder, Sorokin. He rewards them with 69 saves and two wins that include a shutout.
Grosse Pointe Griffins
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Residing in the Central Division basement, the expansion Griffins host the cellar-dwellers of the Atlantic Division, the Charlotte Buzzards, for Grosse Pointe’s lone home game of the segment.
GAME #1: CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS@ GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS Ilya Sorokin got the start for the visitors, and it was Spencer Knight between the pipes for Grosse Pointe. After a scoreless first, Alex Iafallo opened the scoring for Charlotte, deflecting rookie Mo Seider’s drive. But just over 4 minutes later, Sebastian Aho evened the score on a nice feed from Derek Forbort. The game remained deadlocked until 13:58 of the third period, when Alex Pietrangelo took a drop pass from The Great 8 and blasted it by Knight to give the Buzzards the lead. Charlotte clung to the lead late into the period. When play moved into the visitors’ zone with 2:00 to go in regulation, Knight headed to the bench for the extra skater. The move quickly paid dividends as Robby Fabbri scored his first of the campaign with a deflection of a Josh Morrissey blast to tie the game at 18:19.

Overtime solved nothing. But shootout goals by Connor and Aho sent the Griffins to a satisfying victory.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Grosse Pointe earns only its second win in 6 home games. But with the win, the Griffins are only 3 points out of first in the wacky Central Division.
Brentwood Bandits
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 3 home games.
GAME #1: GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS@ BRENTWOOD BANDITS Grosse Pointe scores the first two goals… Forbort (2) and Aho (4). 2-0 lead.

Brodie (2) gets one back before the end of the 1st. 2-1 Griffins lead.

2nd period sees Josi (2) and Pavelski (2) take the 3-2 lead.

3rd period, Pavelski (3) and Guentzel (3) make it 5-2 and that’s where it would end.

GAME #2: CALIFORNIA REGULATORS@ BRENTWOOD BANDITS Good back and forth game here… tied 4-4 into OT and Compher (2) wins it for the Regulators, who mounted up a victory!
GAME #3: BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS@ BRENTWOOD BANDITS Bobcats strike 1st… 2nd, and 3rd to take a quick 3-0 lead in the first 5:24! Bandits get 2 back in the 1st with Terry (9) on the PP and Josi (3) on the PP. 3-2 Bobcats lead.

2nd period – JVR (3) ties it 3-3, but Meier (2) gets the lead back for Bucks County on the PP… 4-3!

Lehkonen (2) ties it in the 3rd… 4-4!

Head to OT… this time, the good guys prevail as Pavelski (5) sends the crowd home happy with a 5-4 OT Win!

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 home games… 5 out of 6 points. I guess we will take that every time!
Flin Flon Bombers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 3 at home this week against Alamo, Jagr and Chicago
GAME #1: ALAMO DEFENDERS@ FLIN FLON BOMBERS The defenders come to town and nothing gets past Mike Smith or Casey DeSmith in the first period. At 3:42 of the second Joel Erickson Ek gives the Bombers the lead but Rasmus Andersson scores on the power play at the end of the second period to know the score at the end of 2. The third period has both goaltenders shining but Radko Gudas takes an interference penalty and with less than 2 minutes left in the third period Jesper Bratt finds the back of the net and the Defenders go up 2-1. With the goaltender pulled, Tyler Bertuzzi whips a wrister past Smith to send the game into overtime. Building on that momentum the Bombers get the game winner from Gabriel Landeskog on a redirect from Jacob Slavin. 3-2 Bombers in OT.
GAME #2: JAGR MULLETS@ FLIN FLON BOMBERS The high flying Mullets come to town and at 10:42 Patrice Bergeron knocks home a rebound off the pads of DeSmith after making a great stop on Tkachuk. At the 14:41 mark, Jacob Slavin wrists a shot through a screen past Jacob Markstrom and with the game looking like it would go to the intermission tied at 1, Justin Faulk blew a shot from the blue line past Markstrom at 19:55 to send the Bombers in 2-1. Both goalies starred in the second period turning away a total of 28 shots between the two of them. The Mullets dominated early and with Auston Mathews in front of the net, Casey Desmith robs him with Kevin Fiala grabbing the rebound and sending Tyler Bertuzzi in on a breakaway which he backhands past Markstrom for a 3-1 lead. The Mullets poured it on in the third but couldn’t solve DeSmith and the Bobmers take it 3-1.
GAME #3: CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA@ FLIN FLON BOMBERS In one of the craziest games I have ever played, the Cosa Nostra and Bombers light the scoreboard on fire. Drake Batherson puts the Bombers up 1-0 11:27 in, but Patrick Maroon and Michael Bunting both score for Chicago to give them a 2-1 lead after a period. In the second Jack Hughes and Tyler Bertuzzi give the Bombers the lead but Dylan Larkin ties it up for the Cosa Nostra and at the end of 2, we have a 3-3 tie. Alex DeBrincat and Bunting strike for Chicago to give the Cosa Nostra a 5-3 lead but at 6:27 Vladimir Tarasenko scores to cut the game to 5-4. For lack of a better pun, the Bombers bomb Saros and at 18:58 David Pastrnak breaks through to tie the game at 5-5. 16 seconds later Justin Faulk puts the Bombers up 6-5, but the Cosa Nostra pull Saros and Dylan Larkin beats Marc-Andre Fleury to send the game to overtime…….in overtime the Bombers outshoot the Nostra 6-2 but neither could put the game away. In the shootout Fleury stops Larkin,Kyrou and DeBrincat, giving Jack Hughes attempt the game winner.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 6 points in a crazy week.
California Regulators
GAME #1: JAGR MULLETS@ CALIFORNIA REGULATORS Jagr hands California the L. 6-4.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: California drops its only home game.
Pittsburgh Miners
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Can the Miners turn it around after a bad week.
GAME #1: PORTLAND STORM@ PITTSBURGH MINERS 5-2 Loss to the storm as Carter Hart gets 1 of his 2 games in this year.
GAME #2: GILBERT SHARKS@ PITTSBURGH MINERS The Miners can’t seem to close a game out and they loose in OT to the Sharks 5-4.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Kadri is back on the block
