Brentwood Bandits
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Bandits have been surprising this season. We’re usually more about a defense and goaltending game, with opportunistic scoring throughout the lineup. This season, it’s been the 1st line tearing it up. The defense and Vasilevskiy have been mediocre, but we are currently the highest scoring team in the league. Will it continue?
GAME #1: BATHGATE RANGERS@ BRENTWOOD BANDITS Division rival and back to back champion Bathgate comes to town.

Bandits score three… then the Rangers Score three. 3-3 in the 3rd.

Bandits take the lead, 4-3… then Bathgate scores two and takes the lead 5-4.

With time winding down, Vasilevskiy pulled… Caufield (5) scores with 1:02 remaining! Tie game 5-5!!

With 2:21 left in OT, Kopitar sends the crowd home happy as the Bandits win a slugfest in OT, 6-5!!

WEEKLY SUMMARY: One game, one win. Huge divisional win, actually. But still… need to shore up the defense if it all possible!
Bathgate Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers host Pittsburgh for their only home game this week…..
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH MINERS@ BATHGATE RANGERS The Miners are off to a struggling start this year so they are working hard to turn it around and come out firing and firing and firing to open the 1st period. 17 SOGs in the period and Norris and Lane each put one past Reimer in the 1st both in the last half of the period. That countered the Ragners goal by Goodrow just before the midway point in the period and the Miners gain the advantage 2-1 after 20 minutes of skating.

In the 2nd however, the Rangers tighten up and limit the Miners to 8 shots on net, Reimer was a happier camper, and he stops them all. They even manage to stop a PP opportunity that came early in the 2nd. Provorov goes off at 4:11 for cross checking – but Kadri (PIT) and Trouba (BGR) join him in the penalty box at the same time for roughing. It got testy out there. After killng off the PP, the Rangers get the man advantage when Cirelli goes off for Pittsburgh on a tripping call. With the PP opportunity for Bathgate, they were able to tie the game when Kreider fires a shot that gets past Kahkonen but hits the post but caroms in for the goal. Late in the period, Tatar tips a Colton shot past Kahkonen and lights the lamp and the Rangers take a 3-2 lead into the locker room after 2.

As we move to the 3rd – the next goal (if any) will be pivotal – and we do have a next goal (or two). WIth 11:30 to go the Rangers move it into the Miners ends and work the puck around with Tavares and Buchnevich seemingly in control. Finally Tavares sees a land and fires a slapper from the perimeter and Buchnevich tips it and he redirects it into the back of the net and the Rangers grab a 4-2 lead! Turns out to be an important goal as the Norris-Laine line combos with Cernack to come into the Rangers zone with 8 to go and they are heck bent on scoring and pass it around until Norris fires one home past Reimer to make it 4-3. Rangers now have a tense 8 minutes to get through including a final minute of the extra attacker. No more goals (by either team) and the score of 4-3 Bathgate holds up as the final. Pittsburgh again was attacking hard in the 3rd – 17 more SOGs for a total of 42 in the game. But the Rangers controlled the face-offs with a 67% winning clip. Everything else was pretty much even, except for the Stars of the game – Pittsburgh grabs two of the spots!

STARS
1. PIT – Norris 2 goals
2. PIT – Laine 1 goal, 2 assists
3. BGR – Goodrow 1 goal
Reimer racks up 39 saves for Bathgate and Ferraro blocks 7 shots for Pittsburgh!

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1 game, 2 points, can’t do better so we’re happy!!
Flin Flon Bombers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Bombers get Bathgate and Portland
GAME #1: BATHGATE RANGERS@ FLIN FLON BOMBERS Ryan O’Reilly gets the Bombers on the board shorthanded at 9:29 but Jacob Trouba responds at 12:56 of the first period. Kevin Fiala redirects a shot from Radko Gudas at the 16:13 mark and the Bombers take a 2-1 lead after 1. Vladimir Tarasenko scores the only goal of the 2nd period and the Bombers lead 3-1 going into the third period. Pavel Buchnevich scores on a wraparound on the power play to cut the lead to 3-2 but David Pastrnak puts the Bombers up 4-2 to stay.
GAME #2: PORTLAND STORM@ FLIN FLON BOMBERS Aaron Ekblad puts the Bombers up early on the power play but Joel Farabee ties the score at 1 and the 10 minute mark. Jordan Eberle notches his first of the season 3 minutes later and the Storm go into the intermission up 2-1. The lead would hold until late in the second when Tarasenko scores for the Bombers to knot the game at 2. The third period is tight Lingren goes to the sin bin for the Storm. Drake Batherson scores for the Bombers to give them the lead. The Bombers clamp down and fend off a major push by the Storm with the empty net.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Bombers continue to play well
Alamo Defenders
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Alamo plays LA this week.
GAME #1: LA GREAT DANES@ ALAMO DEFENDERS Couture scores his 2nd goal of the year early in the first for Alamo. In the 2nd, Draisaitl scores on a power play and its 2-0, Alamo after 2.

The 3rd period is much different as LA puts 3 on the board to win the game. Scheifele, Ehlers, and Kempe score.

LA 3 Alamo 2

1-Scheifele
2-Ehlers
3-Draisaitl

WEEKLY SUMMARY: LA defeats Alamo, 3-2.
Jagr Mullets
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Just one home game this block, but it’s a big one. A BotB showdown.
GAME #1: BRENTWOOD BANDITS@ JAGR MULLETS 5-1 Jagr. A brotherly beatdown.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Coincidentally, KC and the Sunshine Band was scheduled for the post-game entertainment, and their performance of “That’s The Way (I Like It)” brought the house down.
LA Great Danes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Three tough matchups at home versus Brentwood, Alamo, and Gilbert.
GAME #1: BRENTWOOD BANDITS@ LA GREAT DANES The Danes are still dead last in the league in offense and Brentwood is one the top scoring teams so far. Despite LA’s strong defensive start this season, we need some guys to get on the scoresheet. And William Nylander in game #13 finally gets goal #1 on the season 5:15 into the game. But Giroux takes a double-minor for high-sticking shortly after that. As the first penalty expires, the Bandits league-leading power play converts on a Roman Josi goal, and we end period one tied at 1.

In the second, it’s Jonas Brodin with his first goal of the season giving LA the 2-1 lead, and we end the period that way.

In the third, the Great Danes seem to lose every draw until late, but scoring chances are at a minimum in the third, and the Danes finally win a few faceoffs late and control the puck the final minute with Vasilevskiy stuck in net the whole time. So the Danes hang on for the 2-1 win.

Shesterkin with 29 saves is the #1 star, and first of the year goal scorers Brodin and Nylander are the other stars. Anze Kopitar was dominant in the face-off circle for Brentwood, winning 14 of 17. The Danes outhit the Bandits 21-9 in the game, as Darnell Nurse continues his dominant play with 5 hits and 5 blocks.

GAME #2: ALAMO DEFENDERS@ LA GREAT DANES Alamo scores first, a PPG by Leon Draisaitl. LA’s PK unit has been excellent this year, but the elite PP units the last 2 games get the best of them. But Adrian Kempe scores late for LA and we are deadlocked at 1-1 after one.

In the second, the teams trade goals. Kempe gets his second of the game, followed by a Blake Wheeler deflection of a Draisaitl shot. 2-2 after two.

First shift in the 3rd, and Chandler Stephenson puts LA on top 27 seconds in. Alamo then takes a quick penalty, and LA’s mediocre power play converts this time on Barkov’s goal, and just like that it’s 3-1. It’s lockdown time for the Great Danes, and Alamo helps the cause with 2 more penalties. Nylander is now on a goal scoring streak as he scores his 2nd of the year, another PPG. Until the game’s final 2 minutes SOG are 20-4 in the 3rd, and The Danes close it out with a 5-2 win.

#1 star is Adrian Kempe with 2 goals, linemate Chandler Stephenson is the #2 star with 1G-2A and the game winner. Leon Draisaitl with 1G-1A for Alamo is the 3rd star.

GAME #3: GILBERT SHARKS@ LA GREAT DANES Even with the Great Danes strong start to the season, Gilbert is the team to beat in the Pacific this year, so a big challenge to see if we can hang with them.

It was a somewhat bizarre first period with 5 goals scored in the first 13 minutes, 3 by the visiting Sharks. Two of the Shark goals came on breakaways – Haula short-handed and then D-man Adam Fox. Shesterkin made one big save in the period, stopping Duchene off a 2 on 1 later in the period. 3-2 Gilbert after one.

LA takes 2 straight penalties in the second, but they kill them off and period 2 ends still 3-2 Gilbert.

LA continued to make things difficult for themselves in the 3rd with 2 more penalties, but they stay within striking distance and Roope Hintz scores a deflection goal with 5:20 left to tie the game. We would be very happy to gain a point in this one, but it was not meant to be – Stamkos beats Shesterkin on a wrap-around with just 1:30 to go, and Gilbert regains the lead. Some poor coaching leaves LA with its 3rd line on ice at the end with the goalie pulled, but it almost worked. Adrian Kempe has 3 chances in the final minute, including one off the crossbar with ~30 seconds left. The Sharks hold on for the 4-3 win.

All 3 stars are Sharks – Fox 1G-1A, Haula 1G, Stamkos 1G.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Two wins in three home games. It was not the result we wanted against the Sharks, but the Great Danes did overcome some adversity in that one and battled until the end, coming up just short.
Bucks County Bobcats
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home tilts as the Bobcats try and right the early season ship
GAME #1: PORTLAND STORM@ BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS Timo Meier scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the 3rd period to erase a Portland lead and gave the Bobcats a 3-2 victory. Timo Meier. You can’t stop him, you can only hope to contain him.
GAME #2: TOLEDO WALLEYE@ BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS Connor McDavid scored his second goal of the game with 15 seconds left in regulation and the goalie pulled, but Toledo came away with the 2 points on an Elias Petterrson goal in OT for the 5-4 win. Elias Petterrson. You can’t stop him, you can only hope to contain him.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 of 4 points gained, although an OT loss to Toledo does not help in the Central Division race.
Gilbert Sharks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Only 1 home game this week for Gilbert versus division rival California
GAME #1: CALIFORNIA REGULATORS@ GILBERT SHARKS Zucarello puts Gilbert up 1-0 with about 7 minutes left in the 1st period but California storms back before the end of the period with goals by Kane and Stone. Craig Smith scores the only goal of the 2nd period and it goes to the final period all tied up. It would only take 1:22 before Perry breaks the tie and puts California ahead. Gaudreau scores with 3:30 minutes to play and extends the lead to 2. Smith score his 2nd of the game with the goalie pulled to get it back within 1 but Stone scores his 2nd into an Empty Net to secure the 5-3 win for California.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Sharks need to win these home division games if they want to compete
Grosse Pointe Griffins
WEEKLY PREVIEW: With an underwhelming 2-4-0 record at home thus far, Grosse Pointe welcomes Jagr, Gilbert and Toledo to Olympia Stadium
GAME #1: JAGR MULLETS@ GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS Tied at 1 after 2 periods [Raymond (GPG),Kaprizov (JAG)]. the visitors put this one away with 2 unanswered 3rd period goals from Bergeron and Mathew Tkaczuk.
GAME #2: GILBERT SHARKS@ GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS The Sharks Matt Duchene staked his club to a 2-0 lead with goals in the 1st and 3rd periods. Robby Fabbri’s 3rd of the season made it a one-goal game with 7:29 to go. Then with 4:21 left in the 3rd period, Brad Marchand went after Mikko Rantanen over something that was said and picked up a 5-minute penalty for roughing. Marchand paid heavily for his transgression as Kyle Connor’s PPG evened things up at 16:44 and then Evegny Kuznetsov’s PPG at 19:14 gave Grosse Pointe a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 win.
GAME #3: TOLEDO WALLEYE@ GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS 1980’s hockey returned to Olympia Stadium with Grosse Pointe defeating Toldeo, in overtime, 8-7! The Griffins actually led at one point in the 1st period 5-2, but the Walleye battled all the way back to taje a 6-5 lead halfway through regulation. Sebastian Aho, with his second goal of the night, won it for the Griffins with 15 seconds remaining in OT. Neither starting goalie, Demko (TOL) and Bernier (GPG) finished the game, Demko yanked after giving up 6, Bernier after surrendering 7.

Aho finished with 2G+2A, Kuznetsov with 1G+2A, and Kubalik with 3A.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Griffins have a decent homestand with 4 of a possible 6 points with no team in the Central Division stepping forward to dominate.
Toledo Walleye
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Walleye entertain the ominous Sharks and Cosa Nostra. Bad bad things on the horizon. Kucherov on DL.
GAME #1: GILBERT SHARKS@ TOLEDO WALLEYE Game crashed middle 2nd period, so PBP is a bit messed up.

Gilbert features an all-star, and maybe future HOF front line of Stamkos, Marchand and MacKinnon. No wonder they’ve won 8 games already. 1st period sees good back and forth, plenty of shots, and after 10 minutes, no score, no penalties. That comes to an end with an Arvidson minor, and the Sharks go on PP. Walleye thwart all that, and off we go. Just before the end of the period, Pageau breaks the stalemate, and Moose are up 1-0. Just seconds later, Marchand with a hook puts the Moose on PP. Period ends 1-0 Moose.

2nd opens with the final few seconds of the PP, and the Moose are able to take it to the last second, Robertson scoring just as the penalty expires to register a PP goal, making it 2-0. Gilbert dominates the rest of the 2nd, getting 16 SOG, inclusive of 1 powerplay, but nothing goes in. The Moose get 2 PP but are also stopped on each, and it stays 2-0 after 2.

Gilbert wipes the zero off the board early in the 3rd with a goal from Burns. and then 10 minutes later they tie it up on a goal from Thompson. Toledo looking to give this one away, with a penalty on Pageau. The PK unit says, “wait just a minute” and brings some sanity back to the ice. Gilbert continues with more chances, 15-7 SOG advantage, but no more blood, and off to OT tied 2-2.

Pretty balanced overtime, but no really good scoring chances, and we go to the shootout.

Marchand with the first tally, but answered by Robertson, 1-1, MacKinnon misses, Mangiapanne scores, 2-1 home, and the Stamkos miss seals the W for Toledo.

Toledo 3, Gilbert 2, SO

1st star – Burns 1G 2pts
2nd – Stolarz 46 saves
3rd – Robertson 1G

GAME #2: CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA@ TOLEDO WALLEYE Divsion Rivals, battle of I-80. Moose on the board really early, as Trocheck scores before a minute is off the board. Toledo with overlapping minors in the middle of the period, and Foligno on a rebound shot ties the game at 1.

A late 1st period minor gets the Moose on the PP at the start, and Mangiapanne scores early to make it 2-1. A Chicago minor is killed off shortly after. Back at even strength, the Moose get an insurance goal from Arvidsson just before halftime. Toledo kills off one more minor and its 3-1 Moose at break.

Toledo gets lazy in the middle of the 3rd, letting Chicago hang around in the Toledo end too long, and DeBrincat scores to make it an interesting one goal game. And just to make it more interesting, Toledo with a minor, but then kill it off. As the clock drops under 2 minutes, Roy gets called for hooking, a rare late game penalty. Toledo get a few shots off, all stopped, Chicago gets control, comes up ice and pulls the goalie, only to lose possession. Toledo gets a couple empty net chances, both stopped, then Chicago comes up ice and gets a couple shots off, both stopped, and the Walleye survive, 3-2

1st star – Mangiapanne 1G 2pts
2nd – Trocheck 1G 2pts
3rd – Arvidsson 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A good week with 2 wins. Both times the Walleye grab the lead early.
Cincinnati Inferno
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Cincinnati Inferno host four games at The Incinerator this week. An excellent chance to crawl back into the divisional race.
GAME #1: ALAMO DEFENDERS@ CINCINNATI INFERNO Alamo 7, Cincinnati 3

It was the Jesper Bratt Show, with four goals as the Defenders hung a touchdown on Cincinnati. Sidney Crosby handed out four assists for the winner, as Robin Lehner turned away 29 shots.

GAME #2: JAGR MULLETS@ CINCINNATI INFERNO Jagr 5, Cincinnati 3

It was the Hamphuis Lindholm Show in this one, as he lit the lamo three times. Jacob Markstrom stopped 30 in the victory.

GAME #3: CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS@ CINCINNATI INFERNO Cincinnati 3, Charlotte 2

Cam Talbot turned aside 38 shots in the Inferno’s win. Jared McCann netted the game winning goal in the second period.

GAME #4: FLIN FLON BOMBERS@ CINCINNATI INFERNO Flin Flon 5, Cincinnati 4

Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and three assists to pace Flin Flon in this one. Joel Erikkson Ek neeted a pair of goals for a three-point night.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: There is a bit of concern in the Queen City after dropping three of four and allowing an uncharacteristic 19 goals. Changes may be coming sooner rather than later if things do not get better…
Charlotte Buzzards
WEEKLY PREVIEW: With a somewhat disappointing 5-6-1 record entering the week, the Buzzards were seeking to make a run in the East, especially with so many competitive teams duking it out (gotta love the parity in this league!). The schedule at home did not look easy in the least for Charlotte, with a game against the Bucks County Bobcats followed by a contest against a loaded Flin Flon team emerging as the team to beat in the Atlantic (8-1-2entering the week), then a Portland Storm squad that entered the week with a winning record (6-4-1) and has improved through the years to emerge as a legitimate Atlantic division contender.
GAME #1: BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS@ CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS The Buzzards erupted for four goals in the first period off of 18 shots (three of the goals coming very late in the period), and that was enough to hold on to a 4-1 win. Following Charlotte’s rare hot start to open a game, Buzzards third string goalie Antii Ranta, impressive in the early stages of this season, closed the door the rest of the way and finished with 32 saves. The only goal that eluded him came 25 seconds into the third, courtesy of Tom Wilson power play goal (assists were from Knights Alexandre Carrier and Zach Hyman) .

Three stars (all Charlotte:
1. Bryan Rust 1 G 2 Points
2. Vincent Danault 1 G 2 Points
3. Antii Raanta (32 saves)

Notable: Despite Charlotte’s early dominance, Bucks County actually outshot the Buzzards for the game 33-27. Rust’s goal proved to be the game winner; Danault had given Charlotte a 1-0 lead 5:48 into the first and three more goals in the last 5:28 of that period from Rust, Carter Verhaeghe and Ryan Johansen propelled the Buzzards to the 4-0 lead. Johansen won 15 faceoffs.

GAME #2: FLIN FLON BOMBERS@ CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS The November 13 matchup between the first-place Flin Flon Bombers and Buzzards was the definition of a defensive classic. Mike Smith saved 27 shots in the first two periods for the Bombers and Illya Sorokin also ensured the game goal-free with 19 saves in the first two periods. There were other defensive gems however. There was Charlotte rookie defenseman Moritz Seider blocking eight shots out of his team’s 24 total blocks and the Bombers’ Aaron Ekblad on the other side blocking five. Simply stated, this game seemed destined for a scoreless overtime.

Until just over 2 minutes in regulation, that is. Alex Ovechkin shot a puck in deep for Charlotte and line mates Ryan Johansen and Mitch Marner exchanged passes until Johansen beat DeSmith stick-side low with 1:23 left in the third that put the hosts ahead 1-0. DeSmith was immediately pulled for the tying goal effort, leading to a Sam Bennett empty netter with 1:01 remain. That seemed to ice the game, but the Bombers did not go away quietly. With eight ticks on the clock, a shot by Bombers defenseman Jaccob Slavin was redirected by Gabriel Landeskog, beating Sorokin and spoiling the shutout. To provide extra drama the Bombers won the subsequent faceoff – but could not get a shot off , as the Buzzards won this pivotal division game, 2-1, with all the goals occurring in the last two minutes. Unbelievable!

In a rarity, especially in this league, both goaltenders deservedly got the top two stars. A fun game to be a part of!

Three stars:
1. Sorokin 31 saves
2. DeSmith 37 saves and a .974 save percentage.
3. Johansen, the game winning goal

GAME #3: PORTLAND STORM@ CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS This game had the looks of many of Charlotte’s early games when it was slumping early. The Buzzards were stuck in quick sand out of the gates and the Storm capitalized with a 2-0 lead by the halfway point of the contest, thanks to even-strength goals from Jordan Eberle and Clayton Keller.

But the Buzzards, led by Mitch Marner, rallied and dominated the rest of the contest with five unanswered goals – two of them by Marner – for the 5-2 win.

Raanta was again in nets for Charlotte and saved 28 while shutting down the Storm in the second half.

Jonathan Marchessault, Bennett and Johansen accounted for the other Charlotte goals in the comeback as the squad fired 36 shots against losing goalie Jake Oettinger, under deluge a good part of the evening.

Three stars (all Charlotte):
1. Marner 2 G, 3 Pts
2. Johansen 1 G, 4 Pts
3. Marchessault 1 GWG

Notable Oettinger 31 saves, Charlotte edged Portland in shots 36-30.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte, after a slow start to its season, catches fire and wins three home games (six out of a possible six points) to assure itself of a winning record through Thanksgiving at 8-7-1 when factoring a road loss against Cincinnati just reported.

The Alexander Ovechkin draught continues: 50 goals in 77 real-time games, but in our little league, he has yet to score a goal through 15 game not including the Cincy loss where he was likely neutralized as well). I bet if Ovechkin was a Bruin he’d be lights out in the way this game engine rates and favors Boston players! (but I digress). The sky could be the limit for Charlotte if Ovie offers anything the rest of the way.

California Regulators
GAME #1: CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA@ CALIFORNIA REGULATORS California 6
Chicago 3
GAME #2: ALAMO DEFENDERS@ CALIFORNIA REGULATORS California 4

WEEKLY SUMMARY: California takes two at home.
Portland Storm
WEEKLY PREVIEW: One game hosting Pittsburgh
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH MINERS@ PORTLAND STORM Portland gets a 2nd period goal from Hathaway (1) but Pittsburgh responds 90 seconds later on a Kadri (4) goal

With 27 seconds left Olofsson (6) beats the defense and gets the game winner for Portland

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland gets the win in their lone game of week
