WEEKLY PREVIEW: | With new talent on the roster, Nazem Kadri, the Moose hope to get the chemistry going against Pittsburgh and Gilbert |
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH MINERS@ TOLEDO WALLEYE | The Moose own the first period and run over Pittsburgh with 4 goals. Robertson, Yamamoto, Pettersson and Kucherov chase Bobrovsky after 13 minutes. 4-0 after 1.
Pittsburgh gets it together and turns it around a little in the 2nd. The Miners get a goal from Johnsson while keeping the Walleye scoreless. 4-1 after 2. Kadri scores what we hope will be the first of many for Toledo. Former Walleye, Robert Thomas, answers for Pittsburgh. Mangiapane and Stutzle add one more for each team. Game ends 6-3 1st star – Kucherov 1G 2pts |
GAME #2: GILBERT SHARKS@ TOLEDO WALLEYE | Gilbert brings the big bully Tristan Jarry to Toledo and he has his way tonite. Jarry stops 37 of 38 on the night to make it miserable.
In the meantime, the Sharks manage to miss the Walleye goalie repeatedly. Duchene 2, Haula, Smith, and Stamkos 2 make the final score look as ugly as it really was in this 6-1 pounding. 1st star – Duchene 2G |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Not a great week but could have been worse. Can’t do much against a hot goaltender some nights, so let that one go. |

Flin Flon Bombers | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The Bombers get two at home |
GAME #1: PITTSBURGH MINERS@ FLIN FLON BOMBERS | The Miners come to town and get whacked coming out of the gate, Anthony Duclair, Reilly Smith (twice) and Joel Erickson Ek give the Bombers a 4-0 lead 16:39 into the first period. Patrick Laine puts the Miners on the board to go into the first intermission down 4-1. Instead of laying down, the Miners play spirited hockey and Adam Larsson while short-handed cuts the score to 4-2. Less than 5 minutes later Ryan Hartman cuts the score to 4-3 and Pittsburgh goes into the 2nd intermission down 4-3. Early in the 3rd Ryan O’Reilly tallies a goal on the power play to give the Bombers a 5-3 lead, but showing no quit the Miners get a goal from Joshua Norris…..but is where it ended 5-4 |
GAME #2: CALIFORNIA REGULATORS@ FLIN FLON BOMBERS | The Regulators come into town with a solid team. The Bombers get the scoring going with Seth Jones scoring on the power play through a screen through Linus Ullmark. Tyler Bertuzzi would add to the lead 4 minutes later and the Bombers would lead 2-0 after 1. The next period would be dominated by Linus Ullmark and Casey DeSmith as neither team would get on the board in the second period. Brock Nelson would convert on the power play at 2:39 of the third to get the Regulators on the board, but Jared Spurgeon would take a bad holding penalty and 30 seconds later David Pastrnak would find the back of the net for a 3-1 lead. At 15:22 Joel Erickson Ed would add to the lead but less than a minute later Mark Stone would tally for California. It was all over but the shouting as Reilly Smith would add an empty netter 5-2. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | 4 points for the Bombers |
Grosse Pointe Griffins | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | 4 home games for the Griffins and a chance to move up in the Central Division if they can go on a run. |
GAME #1: GILBERT SHARKS@ GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS | With the visitors pressing for the GTG, Mikko “The Moose” Rantanen deflected Quinn Hughes’ low drive past Tristan Jarry at 18:37 of the third period, just 28 seconds after Brad Marchand had pulled Gilbert within one, and the Grosse Pointe Griffins went on to defeat the Sharks 4-2. Spencer Knight had a strong game for Grosse Pointe, turning aside 35 shots. |
GAME #2: BATHGATE RANGERS@ GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS | Trailing the Rangers 3-1 with just a little over five minutes remaining in the third period, the Griffins staged a thrilling rally to send the game into extra time where they would win the bonus point in the shootout. Robby Fabbri made it a one-goal game at 14:55. Then with Samsonov on the bench for the added attacker, Evgeny Kuznetsov deflected Lawson Crouse’s low drive by a screened Pavel Francouz at 19:21. Overtime achieved nothing. But in the shootout, Samsonov stopped Kreider and Buchnevich, while Kyle Connor and Sebastian Aho both were able to beat Francouz for the 4-3 win. |
GAME #3: CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS@ GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS | Grosse Pointe (Rantanen, Gurianov) led the Buzzards 2-1 after two. Dougie Hamilton’s SHG at 8:57 of the third period evened the score. Then with just under 3 minutes to play in regulation, Alex Pietrangelo got the GWG with a powerplay blast that Spencer Knight never saw. Alex Ovechkin added an ENG to make it a 4-2 win for Charlotte. |
GAME #4: BRENTWOOD BANDITS@ GROSSE POINTE GRIFFINS | At the end of the first period, thanks to a pair by Terry and a single by Kerfoot, Brentwood held a 3-1 lead over the Griffins. And with Andrei Vasilevskiy tending goal for the Bandits the chances of the home team staging a rally appeared at best remote. But that’s exactly what happened with Grosse Pointe scoring 5 unanswered goals to take an impressive 6-3 win. Leading the Griffins to victory were Fabbri, Aho and Rantanen, each enjoying a three-point night. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Grosse Pointe has its best home stand of the season, taking 3 of 4 games. |
Cincinnati Inferno | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The Cincinnati Inferno take on Alamo and Bathgate at The Incinerator this week. |
GAME #1: ALAMO DEFENDERS@ CINCINNATI INFERNO | Cincinnati 5, Alamo 2 |
GAME #2: BATHGATE RANGERS@ CINCINNATI INFERNO | Bathgate 6, Cincinnati 5 |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | A home split means that Cincinnati may be looking to shake things up. |
Bucks County Bobcats | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | ‘Cats host the top two teams in the league in LA and JAGR….gulp. |
GAME #1: LA GREAT DANES@ BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS | Bucks County comes flying out of the starting gate, scoring goals on the PH, SH, and EV to take a 3-0 lead in the first 13 minutes. Although there were a few anxious moments, Bucks County scores another PP goal with just over 5 minutes left in regulation and come away with the surprising 4-1 win. |
GAME #2: JAGR MULLETS@ BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS | Austin Matthews scores 37 seconds into the game and Bucks County struggles to put any pressure on Jagr, getting only 6 scoring chances in the contest, and Jagr secures the win with 3 goals in the 3rd period (including the 2nd for Matthews) to some away with the 4-0 victory. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Could have been worse, but an uplifting win over LA offered some positives. |
Charlotte Buzzards | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Charlotte entered this week with a record of 18-17-4– which would only be good for sixth place in the East. With the league near the halfway pole, it’s clear the Buzzards will need a second-half push (similar to last year when they won the division) only to qualify for the expanded playoffs. The outlook is bumpy this week too with three games on the road (includes a reported overtime loss in Chicago to the Cosa Nostra) and the lone home game being against Alamo squad also with 40 points entering the week. |
GAME #1: ALAMO DEFENDERS@ CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS | The Defenders entered the Buzzards’ Bojangles Coliseum with pretty much an identical plight and identity – while beginning the week in last place in the Pacific despite a winning record (18-17-4), Alamo — with plenty of offensive playmakers on its team along with a talented defensive unit – were also in sixth in their West conference and fighting to move into playoff positioning.
And, after two periods of this contest, the squads looked to be as evenly matched as advertised, with Alamo’s Leon Draisaitl scoring two goals in the second period to ensure a 2-2 tie entering the final period. Charlotte’s Sam Bennett and Ryan Johansen scored consecutive even-strength goals, however, in the first half of the third period to put the Buzzards ahead. Then Alamo’s Paul Stastny responded with a goal off an assist from Calle Jarnkrok with 7:13 in regulation to narrow the deficit to one. But Charlotte goalie Illya Sorokin made 14 of his 34 saves in the third to douse a legitimate Alamo threat and Bennett and Johansen chipped in empty netters in the final minute of regulation to win a 6-3 contest much closer than the outcome. Three stars: Notable: Draisaitl also won 19 faceoffs. Alamo outshot Charlotte 37-33. Charlotte, after rearranging its special teams entering the week, went one for three on the power play, converting 18:07 into the contest on an Alex Pietrangelo goal that was assisted by Johansen (it put Charlotte ahead 1-0). Alamo struggled in power play situations which proved to be a key factor in this contest (one for seven). |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | The Buzzards rely on its two unheralded stars of the season, Ryan Johansen who gets two goals (he had 21 entering the week to remain atop the goals leaderboard), and Ilya Sorokin who saves 34 shots, to capture a crucial victory over Alamo. With the win, Charlotte assures itself it will be at least .500 by week’s end, and crosses fingers it can get a road win with one of the two games yet to be reported. |
Brentwood Bandits | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | One home game against some wise guys from Chicago… |
GAME #1: CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA@ BRENTWOOD BANDITS | Brentwood finally enjoys some secondary scoring as Heinen (7), Caufield (9), and van Riemsdyk (10) score along with Josi (8) to win the game 4-3. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | One home game, two points. Let’s see how the road is… |
Bathgate Rangers | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | After a busy week at home last week, the Rangers get only 1 home game at the Garden this week, hosting the Storm from Portland |
GAME #1: PORTLAND STORM@ BATHGATE RANGERS | SOGS, Hits, Blocks and PIM were pretty even in this game – but that was about it. Rangers dominate the face-off circle (69-31%) PP (40% to 0%, each with 5 chances) Scoring Chances 29-9 and then the score – well, it was 4-0 Rangers! Top game honors go to Georgiev as he stops all 31 Storm shots that got through to him.
Then he gets support in every way. A Kreider PP goal in the 1st and Panarin PP goal in the 2nd – then a Vrana goal in the 2nd for a 3-0 lead halfway through the game. And to top it off, Provorov scores a SH goal in the 3rd for the icing on the cake. STARS (all BGR) |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Hopefully the road is kind, but one never knows. Home cooking was nice, 1 game, 2 points. |
Portland Storm | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Portland has 3 home games against 3 division leaders in Toledo, LA, and Jagr |
GAME #1: TOLEDO WALLEYE@ PORTLAND STORM | Kucherov (11) scores 16:43 into the 2nd period for Toledo and Robertson (28) adds an empty netter with 1:03 left to give the Walleye a 2-0 lead but Portland’s Puljujarvi (7) draws the Storm within 1 with 44 seconds remaining. Portland pounds the net with an extra attacker but is unable to tie the game as Toledo wins 2-1 |
GAME #2: LA GREAT DANES@ PORTLAND STORM | LA jumps out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st period on goals from Barkov (23) and Hintz (19) but Portland gets a power play from Olofsson (12) in the 2nd period and goals from Kellar (18) and Olofsson (13) in the 3rd to take a 3-2 lead. LA manages to even the score with 3:51 left in the game on a goal from Nylander (13).
After a scoreless OT period we head to a shootout and after misses by Barkov/Ehlers for the Grat Dane and a miss by Jarvis for Portland, Olofsson finds the back of the net putting the pressure on LA. Hintz had the opportunity to even the shootout but misses and Portland escapes with the win |
GAME #3: JAGR MULLETS@ PORTLAND STORM | Portland jumps out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd period on goals from Keller (19) and a power play goal from Graves (3). In the 3rd period Portland extends their lead to 3-0 on a goal from Puljujarvi (8)
With 2:08 remaining in the game Portland’s Hathaway draws a roughing penalty and Jagr capitalizes on the mistake when Miller (4) finds the back of the net. With an extra attacker on the ice Jagr gets another goal from Carter (6) 24 seconds later to draw within 3-2 with 1:12 remaining. Portland was able to withhold a furious attack on goal and escape with the win |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | In a crucial week for the Storm against three division leaders Portland was able to escape with 4 points and remaining in playoff contention |
Gilbert Sharks | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Gilbert ahs two home games versus Brentwood and Bucks County |
GAME #1: BRENTWOOD BANDITS@ GILBERT SHARKS | Stamkos scores twice leading Gilbert to a 3-1 lead with 2 minutes left but Brentwood pulls the goalie and gets goals from Doughty and Josi to send the game to OT. No scoring in the OT takes it to a shootout where Stamkos comes through again scoring the winning goal for Gilbert |
GAME #2: BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS@ GILBERT SHARKS | Bucks County led 1-0 after 1 period but it was all Gilbert the rest of the way. Brent Burns scored two goals and an assist to lead the Sharks to a 5-2 win. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | 2 games, 4 points for Gilbert |
Alamo Defenders | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Alamo hosts Bucks County and Flin Flon this week. |

1-Late in the 1st, McDavid scores for the Bobcats. Bucks County 2 Alamo 1 |
GAME #2: FLIN FLON BOMBERS@ ALAMO DEFENDERS | Robin Lehner gets a shutout for the Defenders.
Crosby scores in the 1st. Draisaitl scores the middle two goals. And, to close out the scoring, Bouchard scores his 5th. Alamo 4 Flin Fon 0 1-Lehner |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Alamo splits against Bucks County and Flin Flon |
LA Great Danes | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | With the holiday break followed by a 4-game road trip in week 9, it seems like forever since we’ve had a home game. A single home game versus the Flin Flon Bombers with another 3 road games to come.
The Great Danes earned 7 of 8 points on the road last week, bringing their road record for the season to 15-3-3, similar to their home record of 15-3-0. Flin Flon comes in leading the Atlantic Division and have a winning record on the road, one of 5 teams in the league with a winning road record, with 3 of those teams from the best division in the MWHL – the Pacific. |
GAME #1: FLIN FLON BOMBERS@ LA GREAT DANES | Jack Hughes, Gabriel Landeskog, and Aaron Ekblad are missing from the Bomber lineup, but that’s a real good team we are facing.
In period one, plenty of shots at 14-11 LA, but a single goal. 2 Bomber penalties result in a power play goal by Adrian Kempe and the Great Danes lead 1-0 after one. In the second, penalty killing is the story. Flin Flon takes both a minor and major penalty but LA’s 5-minute power play was abysmal – ZERO SOG and Flin Flon had three 2 on 1’s, although none of them resulted in any shot attempts. Then LA takes a penalty, but Flin Flon’s chance to swing the momentum is missed as they net zero shots on the PP as well. SOG were only 6-7 in period 2, and the score remains 1-0 LA heading to the third. The Danes quickly blow the game wide open in the 3rd, as LA’s #1 line scores 3 goals on 3 shots in the first 5:42 of the period, starting with a Hintz goal 28 seconds in, followed by goals from Nylander and Barkov. Anthony Duclair redirects a shot past Shesterkin 8 minutes in to spoil the shutout, but a late Ehlers breakaway goal closes out a 5-1 win for the Great Danes. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | A solid win in the only home game of the week. The Great Danes now look to continue their hot streak on the road this week. |
Chicago Cosa Nostra | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Two home games at the Capone Center this week for the Cosa Nostra. |
GAME #1: CINCINNATI INFERNO@ CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA | A tight-checking, low-scoring affair. 1 goal in each period of play between both teams. The game even included the rare 5 for FIGHTING Penalties.
Final Score: Chicago 2 – Cincinnati 1 Labatts 3-Star Selection: Game Winner: – Dylan Larkin Notables: |
GAME #2: CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS@ CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA | A tale of 3 different games. Chicago comes out & bangs in 2. Then falls behind as the Charlotte Buzzard’s score the next 3 in a row. Chicago scores in the middle of the 3rd period to knot it up at 3 apiece. Overtime is good for the Cosa Nostra as they score to win at 3:28 in Overtime.
Final Score: Chicago 4 – Charlotte 3 Labatts 3-Star Selection: Game Winner: – Alex Debrincat Notables: |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | A good week for the home team in Chicago. 4 Points. Could help in a tight Central Division Race. |
