Bathgate Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Atlantic division contenders in town – Cincinnati and Charlotte to take on the Stanley Cup champs as the Rangers fight to stay in that playoff hunt. Our claim to fame this year is #1 assists leader, Artemi Panarin and #3 goal scorer in Chris Kreider (will he get to 50 this year?).
GAME #1: CINCINNATI INFERNO@ BATHGATE RANGERS Inferno in town trying to melt the ice and they draw first blood when Tuch and Erik Karlsson set up William Karlsson for a wrister that beats Reimer over his shoulder. 1-0 7+ minutes into the game. Cincinnati controls play in the 1st keeping the Rangers at bay and the period ends 1-0 Inferno.

Period 2 continues the tight checking but Vrana breaks through for the Rangers scoring on a soft shot that gets through Talbot to tie the game at 6:26. Period continues to drag on – very few whistles and then with 4 minutes to go the Rangers get one of their patented plays going with Kreider passing to Trouba over to Zibanejad for the really quick one-timer that catches Talbot in the wrong positions and it’s 2-1 Rangers! And that’s the score at the end of 2.

3rd period doesn’t resemble either of the others as both teams go on the offensive. There were almost more shots in the 3rd than in the 1st and 2nd periods combined. Cincinnati came out determined to tie the game and sure enough with 7 1/2 minutes gone in the period Weegar fires a slap shot at Reimer that he saves – but there’s a rebound and the Inferno get it and it goes to Malkin – oh he was in just the right spot and he fires it home to tie the game at 2-2. Then the goalies take over and the rest of the 26 shots in the period are all STOPPED and we go to OVERTIME!

Both teams know they get a point – but 2 is better. Two minutes into OT and Cincinnati’s threesome is working on roll as Teravainen dumps one into the corner that DeBrusk comes up with. He fires it over to Teravainen – shots – but it’s wide of the net. But DeBrusk is able to regain control, to Teravainen again, he shots – beats Reimer glove side high – SCORE, CINCINNATI WINS, GAME OVER (just like that). Inferno gets the 3-2 OT win!

STARS (ALL CIN)
1. Malkin 1 goal
2. Teravainen 1 goal
3. W. Karlsson 1 goal

GAME #2: CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS@ BATHGATE RANGERS Well, can we do any better against the Buzzards?
First period – scoreless, but for Charlotte it was frustrating from an offensive standpoint. They manage to get one PP but they only manager to get 2 shots on Reimer during the WHOLE period! However, Raanta was pretty stellar, keeping them in the game, as he stops 12 Bathgate shots to keep the game scoreless after 1.A lot more defense in the 2nd, both teams thwarted but the Buzzards at least upped the SOGs by 400% to 8 and they hold Bathgate to 5. However, one of those 5, and nice shot from Ross Colton beats Raanta and the Rangers take the 1-0 lead midway through the 2nd. What will the final 32 minutes look like? Well – a lot of the same in the 2nd as there are no more goals. So it’s on to the 3rd with the Rangers holding the slim 1-0 lead.We haven’t seen too many illegal plays (at least that were caught) – but the Rangers did get 2 PP opportunities in the 2nd that they missed on, but then 21 seconds into the 3rd Sanheim goes off for holding. Charlotte has the chance to draw even – but the Rangers stifle the attempt. Unfortunately for the home team however, they couldn’t tie up the guy named Ovechkin the whole game. A minute or so after the penalty, the Buzzards get the puck into the Bathgate zone and Marner sends ti to Ovechkin and he fires a hard slap shot that rips right past Reimer and the game is tied! Again we give up a 3rd period lead! Then a couple of minutes later the Rangers work it into the Buzzards end and Tatar takes a soft shot and oh wow, Lee makes a stellar deflection that Raanta never had a chance to stop and the Rangers are back up 2-1! Scores remains 2-1 into the final minute and Raanta leaves. 30 seconds left, and the Rangers’ Tavares wins a faceoff in their end, clears to Buchnevich, to Panarin over to Tavares – shots and hits the empty net to make it 3-1 with 27 seconds left. Same group stays on the ice for the center ice face-off and again Tavares wins it – over to Panarin who fires a hard pass to Buchnevich and Pavel fires it into the EN for another EN goal and a big 4-1 lead with 23 seconds. 4 seconds of pure joy for the home town fans. Lots’ of ice chipping by the Buzzards bench. Those 2 big Tavares face-off wins were key (Rangers won 69% during the game – Tavares got 18 of 23!).

STARS (all BGR)
1. Lee a goal and an assist
2. Tavares a goal and an assist (and lots of faceoff wins)
3. Buchnevich a goal and an assist

Panarin gets 2 more assists!

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Well 3 of 4 points isn’t too bad. Team is doing well, but not great.
LA Great Danes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Home games versus the new-look California Regulators and west leader Jagr Mullets.
GAME #1: CALIFORNIA REGULATORS@ LA GREAT DANES Giroux opens the scoring with an early goal for LA, but CAL responds with a 4th line goal from Vatrano, and we’re tied 1-1 after one.

In the second, LA gets goals from Hischier, Barkov, and Stephenson to take a 4-1 lead after two.

But in the 3rd, Patrick Kane scores in the first minute to make it a 4-2 game. It stays that way until Chandler Stephenson gets his 2nd goal of the game with under 5 minutes to go, and that seals the 5-2 win for the Great Danes.

Face offs were a key to victory, with LA winning 74% of the draws.

GAME #2: JAGR MULLETS@ LA GREAT DANES OMG, what a blitz by Jagr in the first period!! It starts with a Matthews goal in the first minute, and 8 minutes of penalties puts LA on their heels the entire period. During a 4-minute power play in the first half of the period, Jagr has 9 SOG and LA blocked perhaps another 5 shots. Inevitably, Letang beats Shesterkin for the PPG and it’s 2-0 Jagr 10 minutes in. No more goals in the first, Jagr up 2-0 but it could have been worse. SOG were 20-3, chances 12-1.

Things settle down in the 2nd and LA outchances Jagr 5-1, but shots are only 8-6 and no goals, so Jagr maintains their 2-0 lead.

After 5 straight LA penalties through 2 periods, Jagr finally gets called for one. LA almost doesn’t get to go on the power play with 4 scoring chances on the delayed penalty, but Markstrom stops them all. LA fizzles on the PP chance, but gets a second PP opportunity, and this time Roope Hintz converts and it’s a one-goal game with 8 minutes left. The Mullets take a 3rd straight penalty in the 3rd, but LA can only get 1 SOG on the PP, and the Danes then pull Shesterkin as the clock winds down. LA gives up the puck and it’s a quick empty netter by Tkachuk with 1:04 to go. But hold on – LA winds the draw, pulls the goalie again, and Barkov scores! Now a 3-2 game with still 49 seconds left. LA wins another draw, goalie out, Nylander gets a scoring chance with 20 seconds left, Markstrom with the save, Ehlers’ shot is blocked and game over, Jagr wins 3-2!

Jagr and LA end up splitting 4 games this season, LA winning the first 2, Jagr the final 2, both teams 1-1 at home and on the road. The Danes fall short in this one, but they could have packed it in after the first period but gave themselves a chance at the end. LA ended up outchancing Jagr 17-16 for the game.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 2 of 4 points at home is never a good thing, especially with LA’s record this year, but Shesterkin continues to play at a high level with 64 saves in the 2 games and 4 GA.

1st star – Saros 44 saves
2nd – Larkin 1G
3rd – Hanifin 1G

GAME #2: ALAMO DEFENDERS@ CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA Chicago gets the first goal from Dadonov. Then Alamo rattles off 3, with two aided by penalties. Byram with his first of the season, then Severson and McAvoy on the PP. Alamo leads 3-1 after 1.

A penalty filled 2nd sees just one goal, DeAngelo for Chicago on a PP.

A much cleaner 3rd period sees the Defenders add one from Orlov for insurance, and then take it to the barn. Alamo with the 4-2 win.

1st star – McAvoy 1G
2nd – Severson 1G
3rd – Orlov 1G

GAME #3: PORTLAND STORM@ CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA After a scoreless 1st period, Dubois puts Chicago in the lead just before halftime. Durzi responds before the 2nd period ends, on a PP thanks to Roy. 1-1 after 2.

Toledo Walleye
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Big week in Maumee Bay. Bucks County, California and Brentwood all come to the Huntington Centre. Will Kadri wake up and score finally?
GAME #1: BUCKS COUNTY BOBCATS@ TOLEDO WALLEYE And we get the answer early, as Kadri scores his first goal for the Walleye 6 minutes into the game. Apparently stunning everybody, that is all for the 1st period.

The Bobcats wake up and score just before the midway point of the 2nd to tie it up. A few minutes later, Robertson goes on a one man scoring binge with 2 goals in 100 seconds, and the Fish are up 3-1.

3rd period sees both teams get 2 penalties each, which leads to some scoring. But its the shortie kind, as Magiapane gets a steal during a Bobcat PP and goes down to add an insurance goal for the Walleye, now up 4-1 with 11 minutes to go. Thank goodness he got that, as the Bobcats control the last 6 minutes of the game with endless pounding in the Walleye end. Hayes and Kane get goals, and its a one goal game with 2 minutes to go. Bobcats pull the goalie and continue to throw rubber the Walleye, who hold that off, and blow and empty net chance. But in the end, no more scoring and the Walleye escape the late surge by the Bobcats, and avoid becoming cat food. 4-3 Walleye.

1st star – Robertson 2G
2nd – Mangiapane 1G
3rd – Kadri 1G

GAME #2: CALIFORNIA REGULATORS@ TOLEDO WALLEYE Regulators come out on fire and own the rink. Nelson and Hartman with goals in the 1st, while Toledo struggles to get any quality shots. Its 2-0 Regulators, and adjustments for Toledo.

Anderson scores early in the 2nd as boos are heard from the corners of the arena. More adjustments by the home team. Near the midpoint, Robertson scores for Toledo, and a glimmer of hope. 3-1 California after 2.

A California penalty, and a PP goal by Robertson, and the crowd is hopeful. A Kadri penalty, followed by a Sergachev PP goal, and now bummer time. Walleye add more fore checkers and desperation into the mix. It starts to pay off with a goal by Arvidsson with 3 minutes to go. A pulled goalie turns up the heat even more, and after avoiding an empty net chance for California, Mangiapane scores with only 53 seconds left in the game to tie the game at 4. Off to overtime.

9 shots combined in overtime, but none are high quality, and we go to a shootout.

Gaudreau scores, Robertson answers
Reinhart misses, Mangiapane scores to put Toledo up 1
Nelson is stopped, giving Toledo a SO win.

1st star – Robertson 2G
2nd – Mangiapane 1G 2pts
3rd – Arvidsson 1G

GAME #3: BRENTWOOD BANDITS@ TOLEDO WALLEYE 3 games within this game. Brentwood owns the first 17 minutes, and wins 1-0 on a goal by Rielly.

The middle 30 minutes goes to Toledo, 5-0, with goals by Trocheck, Robertson, Pettersson, and Mangiapane twice. Walleye lead 5-1 early in the 3rd.

Brentwood controls the final 13 minutes, 2-0, with goals by Bjornfot, his first of the year, and Dowd. Walleye survive the pulled goalie barrage in the final 2 minutes to hold on.

1st star – Mangiapane 2G 3pts
2nd – Robertson 1G 2pts
3rd – Josi 1G 2pts

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Kadri shows up, finally, with 6 points, and the 2nd line finally is showing some punch, with Mangiapane getting 4 goals, many assisted by Kadri. Will really be interesting when Kucherov gets back for the final playoff push.

GAME #1: LA GREAT DANES@ FLIN FLON BOMBERS Erickson EK and Staal split goals in the first period as they go to the dressing room even at 1. Ehlers scores for the Great Danes at the 10 minute mark to give LA the lead, but at the 12:27 mark Pavel Zacha scores his first of the season for the Bombers and Aaron Ekblad gives them the lead going into the dressing room. Aleksander Barkov deflects a perfect feed from Hintz to tie the score early in the third and it would stay that way until Tyler Bertuzzi gives the Bombers the 4-3 lead at the 18:20 marker……….with the goalie pulled Chandler Stephenson ties the game at 19:34 of the third……..and at 19:54 he scores again….5-4 Great Danes.
GAME #2: GILBERT SHARKS@ FLIN FLON BOMBERS After the meltdown against LA, the Sharks come into Flin Flon……goals were cheap in the first period as 6 were scored, Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar both scored for Gilbert, but O”Reilly, Fiala and Eriksson Ek (twice) give the Bombers the 4-2 lead after one period. Charlotte Buzzards
WEEKLY PREVIEW: February has been nothing short of disastrous for the Charlotte Buzzards as they still seek to get a singular point this month, never mind a win. Charlotte had dropped four in a row entering this week, and then lost two more on the road this week as per reports to fall under .500. It remains in the wildcard chase but first needs to worry about erasing this slide and righting the ship. The home games this week were against Flin Flon and a critical game against Brentwood as the squads duke it out for the third wildcard.
GAME #1: FLIN FLON BOMBERS@ CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS The Bombers have emerged as the class of the Atlantic division this season and given how badly Charlotte has slumped, Flin Flon entered this game as the clear favorite. This game started off with instant scoring from both sides. First Ryan Johansen for the home team got the scoreboard lit up with a goal just 1:14 in against Marc Andre-Fleury but just more than three minutes later, fourth line winger Oliver Bjorkstrand found the net on an assist from Pavel Zacha.

The scoring continued at a frenetic clip in the first half of the opening period as Philip Danault scored two goals for Charlotte in his shift, one at 7:15 and another at 8:35 that put Charlotte on top 3-1. Both came off assists from Bryan Rust.

Scoring subsided for awhile but Mitch Marner padded Charlotte’s lead at the 13:48 mark of the second period with a goal assisted by Johansen and Alex Ovechkin, extending the lead to 4-1. Flin Flon served notice this game was hardly over when 32 seconds later, defenseman Justin Faulk fired a shot past Charlotte goalie Anti Raanta to close the gap quickly to 4-2. But Charlotte answered quickly again and Danault picked up the hat trick with 1:32 left in the second period to give the Buzzards a 5-2 lead.
From there, Raanta sparkled: he stopped all 18 shots Flin Flon fired at him in the third period (he finished with 38), and the Buzzards won by three.

Three stars:
1. Danault (the hat trick)
2. Marner 1 G, 3 pts
3. Johansen 1 G, 2 pts

GAME #2: BRENTWOOD BANDITS@ CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS Charlotte next hosted a Brentwood team it is fighting for the fifth wild card spot with. Entering this week Charlotte had 55 points and the Bandits had 54, but Brentwood had an advantage with two games in hand. It could be a fight to the finish.

After a scoreless first period with Buzzards goalie Illya Sorokin and Brentwood netminder Andrei Vasilevsky holding their own, Brentwood left winger Danton Heinen broke the tie with an even strength goal 2:39 in (assisted by Roman Josi).

But as with the prior home win, Danault again caught lightning in a bottle and scored two goals within a minute in the waning moments of the second period, at 19:25 and 19:47 as the Buzzards claimed a 2-1 lead entering the third period.

Danault’s goals seemed to take the wind out of Brentwood’s sails especially as Vasilevskiy (27 saves) had played so well, showing signs of a shutout prior to that lapse. Charlotte also scored the next goal in this contest, 7:41 in the third courtesy of a Carter Verhaeghe goal that put the hosts ahead 3-1. Nick Dowd’s goal for Brentwood kept the game close and narrowed the deficit to 3-2 with eight minutes to play, but Sorokin saved the other 13 shots in the period and Brentwood failed to find the tying goal on the extra man attack in the last minute as the Buzzard won this squeaker, 3-2.

Three stars (all Charlotte):
1. Danault 2 G
2. Verhaeghe 1 G
3. Sorokin 29 saves

WEEKLY SUMMARY: When it matters most, with Charlotte at its lowest point all season, Phillip Danault carries this team on his back, with 5 goals to help the Buzzards snap a 4-game losing streak and get four out of four points at home. The Buzzards have a pulse after all, knocking off the Atlantic leading Bombers and winning a crucial game against Brentwood. This team needed some sign of life.
