The focus for 2017 was to be more consistent on defense and try and avoid late-game collapses as well as do anything to avoid shootouts and overtime – both an Achilles Heel for the Blizzard in the first half of the season.
\nHampton’s first week of 2017 was spent hosting three very different teams.
\nThe opener was against Wasau (22-15-3) – a strong team both offensively and defensively sporting the likes of Anze Kopitar, Claude Giroux, Duncan Keith and Corey Perry – all of whom had over 30 points by the break. The Lumberjacks had one (actually three) up on Hampton in that they’ve already posted three shutouts in the season as compared to Hampton’s 0 – thank you late-game defensive lapse!
\nThe 2nd game was against division rival Corktown (17-23-1) who have been big underachievers with the likes of Wayne Simmonds being on a pace for 10 goals on the year as opposed to 32 in the NHL. Vlad (the Impaler) Tarasenko leads the team with 17 goals and Scott Hartnell has a strong 38 points.
\nThe finale would pit Hampton against Second City (18-19-3) a team which can put the puck in the net (John Tavares 19-22-41 and Artemi Panarin 13-34-47), but have had a tough time with Tuukka Rask having a goals-against overage around 3.00 and backup Craig Anderson a horrifically disappointing 4.00. Their key in the future will be to
\nimprove on those numbers.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n| Game #1:<\/th>\n | @%$#%^@#! deflections!
\nBrian Elliott was brilliant in goal for Hampton stopping 26 shots, but unfortunately the Lumberjacks landed 28 of them in the game. Both Corey Perry (18) and Mats Zucarello (13) tipped slapshots from the point past Elliott and accounted for all of Wasau’s scoring. Wasau netminder, Jimmy Howard, was even better than Elliott stopping 44 of 46 shots by Hampton which was good enough to send the game into dreaded overtime tied 2-2. In fact, the only chink in the Howard armor came as a result of dumb penalties which resulted in two power play goals for the Blizzard by Aaron Ekblad (13) and Jamie McGinn (17). The dreaded overtime was a non-event and was followed by the even more dreaded shootout.
\nNow from a purist’s perspective the shootout is the hockey equivalent of having a homerun hitting contest decide ball games. It is a complete departure from the game itself eliminating defense and strategy and turns 65 minutes of blood, sweat and tears into a Hollywoodish one-on-one skills competition just to get the bloody game over with and prevent marathon regular season games.
\nNeedless to say, Wasau came out on top with 2 of three shooters scoring (Giroux and Kopitar) while Howard continued his dominance and blanked both Forsberg and plucky Dane Frans Nielsen.FINAL – WASAU 3, HAMPTON 2 (SO)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n| Game #2:<\/th>\n | The Hampton Blizzard apparently hate Finnish goaltenders. Antii Niemi was the latest victim getting chased 17 minutes into the game after allowing four goals on 15 shots. Who did the Corktown Suds throw out to take his place but another another Finn in the form of Kari Lehtonen. Lehtonen fared better – allowing only two goals on 24 shots,
\nbut in the end it made little difference as the Blizzard, still angry from their shootout loss to Wasau, cruised to a 6-1 win.
\nNew Jersey Devils’ centre Jacob Josefson scored the lone Suds’ goal late in the 1st period against Brian Elliott while the Blizzard were on the man advantage.
\nHampton’s goal scoring was distributed nicely over all four lines with Andrew Shaw (8), Filip Forsberg (17), Patric Hornqvist (7), and Mikael Backlund (11) each scoring singles while Jamie McGinn (18) scored goals on even strength and on the power play.FINAL – HAMPTON 6, CORKTOWN 1<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n | \n| Game #3:<\/th>\n | \nTuuka Rask fought valiantly but for the third straight game the Hampton Blizzard fired 40 shots and found the back of the net five times in a 5-1 win over Second City. \nChiefs’ defencement Gotisbehere and Letang had an especially tough game posting a -3 on the day. Nathan MacKinnon scored the lone marker for Second City at 11:48 of \nthe 3rd period. It was his 11th of the season. The teams would trade powerplays, including a brief 5-on-3 for Minneapolis, but neither team would score again and the period would end with Thunder Bay still leading 1-0. Thunder Bay will start the 2nd period with 1:20 left on a carryover powerplay.<\/p>\n After a mostly uneventful second period, Tatar got his 2nd of the game with 3:05 remaining in the period. The second period ends with no further excitement and Thunder Bay leads 2-0.<\/p>\n Minneapolis would come out strong in the 3rd period with 9 shots on goal (and many others wide or blocked) in the first 15 minutes, but still could not break through Mason. A late holding penalty by Bartkowski ruined any chance they had of getting back into the game. With the net empty trying to avoid being shutout, Minneapolis would get 1 more final chance before Nyquist added a 3rd goal for the Nor’Westers to make it 3-0.<\/p>\n A dissapointing performance coming back from the holiday break ends the streak for Minneapolis.<\/p>\n Star 1: TBN Mason 28 saves

Minneapolis comes out firing every puck they can find at the New Jersey netminder. Minneapolis’ Shane Doan took a holding penalty which saw New Jersey almost take an early 1-0 lead, but strong goaltending from Lundqvist kept the score tied at 0. Minutes later with Filppula in the box and Minneapolis now on the powerplay, Doan (10) redeemed himself by blasting a one-timer from Huberdeau past Schneider
\nto give Minneapolis the 1-0 lead (and their first goal since the holiday break) with 9:12 remaining in the first. Filppula would take another penalty not even 2 minutes after getting out of the box and Minneapolis would try to extend the lead but could not break through Schneider again. Minneapolis leads 1-0 at the end of the first.<\/p>\n Byfuglien starts of the second period by taking a slashing penalty for New Jersey only 33 seconds in. With Minneapolis on the powerplay, RUNTIME ERROR. Game resumed. The powerplay would end without consequence for either team. Later in the second with New Jersey breaking out of their zone, Eriksson poked a pass away to create a 3-on-2 and was able to set up Hoffman (12) to give Minneapolis a 2-0 lead. With under 2 minutes to play in the second period, Turris (7) banged home the rebound
\noff a shot from Wingels to get New Jersey on the board. Minneapolis leads 2-1 at the end of the second period.<\/p>\n Minneapolis started the third period aggressively trying to extend the lead, mustering 8 shots on goal in the first 8 minutes. With New Jersey on their heels and trying to break out of their own end, Wideman mishandled the puck and turned it over to Getzlaf just inside their own blue line. Minneapolis capitalized on the 3-on-2 with Schenn beating Schneider to extend the lead to 3-1. New Jersey responds and finally gets some pressure on the Deep Freeze about halfway through the 3rd period, but isn’t able to beat Lundqvist this time. Another turnover in their own zone costs New Jersey again when Doan swiped the puck from Salomaki creating a 2-on-1 with Huberdeau. After a couple of passes back and forth, Doan (11) beat Schneider for his 2nd of the game to give Minneapolis the 4-1 lead. New Jersey got a couple more chances before all was said and done, but Lundqvist stood tall and Minneapolis held on to win 4-1.<\/p>\n Star 1: MIN Doan 2 G

The Deep Freeze players went to sleep early since they couldn’t stay up late watching TV, so they come into the game well rested and ready to play.<\/p>\n Minneapolis opened the scoring just 3 minutes into the first period when Hoffman (13) deflected a shot from Orpik past the Cosa Nostra keeper. Keeping the pressure on, it would be 8 minutes into the game before Chicago generated their first shot on goal. After waking Lundqvist up from his nap for a minute, Minneapolis brought it back up the ice and Chicago’s crumbled, allowing Schenn (8) to beat Mrazek to extend the lead to 2. Minneapolis would not let up but Mrazek kept his team in the game and the deficit at 2 despite facing 18 shots from the Deep Freeze in the period (31 attempted, 10 blocked).<\/p>\n Minneapolis came out strong to start the 2nd period, but Hoffman took a boneheaded 5-minute penalty for cross-checking barely 2 minutes in that forced the Deep Freeze to play some defense for a while. Not even 2 minutes into the prolonged penalty kill, Pesce made matters worse for his team by turning it into a 5-on-3 for the Cosa Nostra. Minneapolis’ defenders were up the challenge and wanted to help out their goaltender, they blocked 5 shots during the penalty kill and only allowed 3 shots to reach Lundqvist during the extended penalty kill. After another powerplay for Minneapolis that failed to generate any offense, Chicago got on the board when Larkin (12) beat Lundqvist with a hard shot to bring the score to 2-1. Chicago won the ensuing faceoff and tied the game on their very next shot when Duclair (13) deflected a shot from
\nKronwall past Lundqvist. Chicago outshot Minneapolis 9-5 in the second and evened the score at 2 heading into the final (regulation) period.<\/p>\n Minneapolis hopes to get momentum back on their side at the beginning of the third period, and they would do just that with a little help from their leading scorer, as Eriksson (21) deflected a shot from Boyle to take a 3-2 lead. Minneapolis takes 2 interference penalties to Sharp and Doan less than 1:30 apart, leading to an extended powerplay for Chicago, and Chicago would make them pay. Bailey gets his 3rd of the season and ties the score at 3 with 14:27 left to play. Chicago outshot Minneapolis
\n22-6 in the third period, but the score would remain tied and we head to overtime at tied at 3.<\/p>\n Halfway through the overtime period, Datsyuk gets loose for Minneapolis and goes 1-on-1 with Kronwall in front of Mrazek. He gets around the defender but fires the shot just wide of the net. Play on! \nNot only did Lansing have two players (Steen and Maroon) ejected from the game, they also killed off a five-minute powerplay when Maroon was canned for boarding (two minutes of which was actually a two-man advantage for Hampton).
\nFollowing the game, Hampton coach Scotty Bowman invited the team over to his house for a barbecue. Reports vary but the bulk of them consistently use words like “disappointing” and “the plain shits” to describe what they found upon their arrival. Bowman, wearing a purple suede tracksuit and moccasins was out back of his house where he had fired up the ol’ Hibachi and loaded it up with two dozen no-name chicken wieners and then proclaimed only the players that could hit the targets on his backyard rink (dinner plate sized foam likenesses of Peter Puck) could have a go at a dog. Rookie sensation Connor McDavid and \nwily veteran Jakub Voracek registered 2 goals and 2 assist each.
