Corktown Suds<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nCorktown has two home games this week.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Thunder Bay Nor’Westers @ Corktown Suds<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nCorktown comes into the week in unfamiliar 1st place territory. Thunder Bay with 20 points and stands in 5th place in the Atlantic, but the East seems pretty stacked with a long season ahead.<\/p>\n

The first periord was full of action. The Suds scored about a minute into the game from rookie Auston Matthews (8). Corktown fired away 13 shots and was able to score 3 times in the first. It was another youngster Andrea Athanasiou notching his 1st goal of the season for the Nor’Westers 2 minutes into the game. End of 1st Corktown lead 3-1<\/p>\n

Thunder Bay would get goals from Coyle and O’Rilley in the 2nd and 3rd to send this one to bonus hockey. Corktown would get the better of the Nor’Westers in the first shootout at home this season.<\/p>\n

Corktown 4-3 Shoot Out<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

California Regulators<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nThe two teams enter today opposite of the 2016-17 season where California was on top of the world, Corktown was a bottom feeder. The trend would continue as Corktown got on top early and never looked back. This one was all Suds on all aspects of the game. The regulators frustration was clear as they could not stay out of the box. Sean Monahan netted two goals (6) as the Suds cruise.<\/p>\n

Gilbert Sharks @ Hampton Blizzard<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nHampton dominated the game in every aspect expect quality scoring chances and the score as Gilbert whipped netminder Antti Raanta and the Blizzard 5-1.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Corktown Suds @ Hampton Blizzard<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nBrock Boeser made his season debut for Hampton and delivered big with a goal and two assists as Hampton bested Corktown 5-1.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Bucks County Racoons @ Hampton Blizzard<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nHampton netminder Carey Price was unbeatable, making 3 great saves to lead the Blizzard to a 5-0 win over the Racoons. The highlight reel though could have been filled by Racoons’ goalie Darling as he was phenomenal in the 3rd period allowing just one goal on six 3-on-1 rushes by Hampton as the Bucks County skaters threw caution to the wind trying to get back into the game.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Weekly Summary:<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nHampton captured 4 out of 6 which is one better than we were hoping for so that’s good. What is not good was having two computer crashes typing game summaries which resulted in the half-hearted blurbs above.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Jagr has a great team. No idea why they have had such a rough time.<\/p>\n

This game was exciting! A goaltender duel if ever I’ve seen one! Murray was on fire. Jagr finally breaks Gibson in the 3rd but the Bandits finally find the missing scale on Smaug’s chest and tie the game. Go to OT. Nothing. Off to a shootout… Gibson was perfect, Murray was not. 2-1 Brentwood wins in a SO. Murray is the No 1 star with 48 saves in a losing effort.<\/p>\n

It was 5-0 before Kane scored in the 2nd and Ferland in the 3rd. Grabner closed out the scoring in the 3rd with his 2nd goal of the game. BUT the big gun in this one was Henrique with a HAT TRICK!

Guentzel scored in the 1st to make it 2-1 Brentwood. Then he scores in the 2nd to make it 3-1. But the Rangers pull a rare feat and actually come back with a Malkin and King goal in the 3rd – and they don’t yield any goals. So on to OT and again it looks like a shoot-out is looming but in the final mintute, Guentzel slips his 3rd goal of the game into the net for the HAT TRICK and the Rangers flame out. 4-3 OT win for Brentwood.

In the 3rd, the Defenders come on strong as they net three goals. Marchand, Karlsson, and Seguin all score. Seguin’s goal was an empty netter. California outshoots Alamo, 35-33. Ryan Miller plays a strong game in goal for Alamo.<\/p>\n

LA Great Danes<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nThe Great Danes reach the quarter mark of the season in first place in the Pacific Division. With 3 home games this week, including games versus 2nd\/3rd place Long Beach and Alamo, the Danes will try to continue their surprising performance early in their inaugural season.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Long Beach Ice Dogs @ LA Great Danes<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nThe Danes strike early 2:54 into the game on a goal by Ryan Kesler on their first shot, but the Ice Dogs respond with a goal by Mikael Granlund on their second shot of the game at 9:04. David Savard’s goal at 14:46 gave the Ice Dogs a 2-1 at the first intermission. A defensive 2nd period until the turning point of the game occurred late in the 2nd. Tyler Bozak of Long Beach took what I suspect is the first 5-minute major roughing penalty of his career, and Darnell Nurse scored his first goal of the season for LA on the PP to tie the game heading into the 3rd period. The Danes could not convert on the rest of the PP that carried into the 3rd period, but 15 seconds after Bozak left the box, Alex Pietrangelo scored at 2:52 to give LA the 3-2 lead. Cam Talbot, who had 40 saves for the game, kept Long Beach in it until the end with some key saves, but Jamie Benn sealed the 4-2 victory for LA with an empty net goal at 19:40. Three stars for LA were Darnell Nurse, Jamie Benn, and Ryan Kesler, each with a goal.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Bucks County Racoons @ LA Great Danes<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nThe Great Danes came out flat and stayed that way throughout. The Raccoons drew blood in the 1st period on a deflection goal by Kyle Palmieri, and put the game away on 3 goals in a 5-minute span mid-2nd period. Palmieri got his 2nd of the game on a wrap-around, followed by a SHG by Tom Wilson, and a PPG by Jaden Schwartz. That ended LA goalie Frederik Andersen’s night as the Danes looked to rest him for the next game with the off-chance a goalie change would spark the team. But there was no spark for LA in this one. Zack Smith made it 5-0 early in the 3rd, and a Brayden Schenn goal at 9:57 spoiled the shutout for Jake Allen. The three stars for the Raccoons were Palmieri 2G, Zack Smith 1G-1A, and Jake Allen with 27 saves.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Alamo Defenders @ LA Great Danes<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nThe Danes look to rebound from the stinker versus the Raccoons, taking on division foe Alamo. After a scoreless first period, Alamo scored first at 7:50 of period 2 on a Tyler Seguin goal off of a delayed penalty. But Tyler Toffoli and LA quickly responded with a goal to tie it at 1 just 27 seconds later. Phillip Danault gave LA its first lead with a goal at 15:09, and the Danes took a 2-1 lead into the 3rd period. In the 3rd, LA out-chanced Alamo 7-3, but a missed breakaway, a crossbar, and key saves by Alamo goalie Robin Lehner again left the Danes clinging a to one goal lead late. But Ryan Suter’s first goal of the season with 3:30 remaining put the game away for the Danes, a 3-1 win. Overall a very even game with the scoring chances 16-14 LA. Frederik Andersen rebounded from being pulled in the prior game to earn the #1 star with 29 saves. Goal scorers Suter and Toffoli received the 2nd\/3rd stars, although the 2nd line for LA keyed the victory – Phillip’s Danault’s goal was the game-winner, and Kesler and Schenn had 2 assists each.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Weekly Summary:<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nTwo division wins in tight games sandwiched around a lackluster 5-1 loss appear to keep the Danes on top in the Pacific for now. Goaltending, strong defensive play, and enough scoring from different guys each night has translated into a very good start to the season for the Great Danes.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Long Beach was able to regain the lead and win on a Lindholm goal with 1:13 left in the game. Talbot gave up 4 goals but made 36 saves in picking up the win.<\/p>\n

Clearfield Bison<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nWith trade rumors swirling, Clearfield hosts an important 3-game set against Columbus, Jagr, and division rival Corktown. Can the Bison offense finally break out a bit? (I actually played these Friday but didn’t have time for the writeups until today, my apologies)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Columbus Brew Jackets @ Clearfield Bison<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nEarly on it was all Clearfield – they outshot the visitors early and often, and Hjalmorsson (of all people) opened the scoring for the Bison midway through the first.<\/p>\n

In the second, the tide turned..huge push from the Jackets, and they got the tying marker from Couture at 8:05.<\/p>\n

We went to the 3rd all square – but two early strikes from the Kucherov line (how good is THAT guy!) made it 3-1 Columbus, and given Clearfield’s goal-scoring issues this one looked all but over….<\/p>\n

…but FINALLY the team showed a little moxie.Rakell and Drouin scored 4 minutes apart in the middle portion of the third, Bobby Lu held the fort, and we went to….OOOOOVERTIME.<\/p>\n

Both teams had chances in OT, but Rakell blasted one at 3:36 to send the home fans home happy, 4-3.<\/p>\n

Shots were relatively even at 40-35 CLE.<\/p>\n

STARS: #1 Rakell 2G #2 Kucherov 3A #3 Bergeron 2A, also won an incredible 20 of 25 faceoffs in this game.<\/p>\n

VERY impressed with the CBJ roster, they look to be the ‘real deal’.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Corktown Suds @ Clearfield Bison<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nThis one was all Clearfield from the get-go. Rakell stayed hot with a goal in the 1st…Clearfield outshot Corktown 18-3 in the 2nd and added a goal from Pat Maroon, and early in the third – just as a major penalty to Smith had expired – Rakell struck again.<\/p>\n

Simmonds scored late for the Suds to spoil the shutout, Clearfield wins 3-1.<\/p>\n

Shots were 47-21 Clearfield,scoring chances 18-9, faceoffs 73% to the Bison…it was that kind of a game.<\/p>\n

Jagr Mullets<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nJagr’s roster is LOADED, yet they’ve been struggling. Would the giant wake for this one?<\/p>\n

Early on…no. 26 seconds into the game, Bergeron breaks free behind the defense and slams it home, 1-0 Clearfield.<\/p>\n

4 minutes later, while shorthanded, ANOTHER breakaway for Bergeron…another goal. 2 shots, 2 goals for the Bison….then the bear awoke.<\/p>\n

Jagr scored twice in the first to tie it..and when Kessel put Jagr ahead early in the second, I figured the Mullets were going to run away with it. But no, we weren’t even halfway done with the goals in this one…<\/p>\n

Clearfield exploded for three goals in under 4 minutes late in the third – and ironically, Old Man Jagr ignited the firestorm with his 6th of the year. Drouin and Subban also scored, and Clearfield somehow led 5-3 after 2.<\/p>\n

The Mullets got a quick goal from Paajarvi in the third and pressed HARD all period, but Anderson (finally) held strong and held the lead. I thought Alex Edler sealed the game at 15:38 when he got his 1st of the year..but 2 minutes later Vlasic struck from the point, making it 6-5.<\/p>\n

The game FINALLY was sealed when potted the empty netter at 19:03 in what was indisputably the craziest game Clearfield has been involved in all season.<\/p>\n

Shots were 39-28 for Jagr, Scoring chances 14-13 for the Mullets. They had a 2-1 attack time edge as well. The game was played at even strength, each team went 0-1 on the PP. As usual Clearfield did well on faceoffs, winning 64%.<\/p>\n

Bathgate made me an offer I can’t refuse’.<\/p>\n

As has been the norm, BC took an early lead in the first period on a goal by Milan Lucic, and as also been the norm, gave the lead up in the 3rd period on a goal by Paul Byron to set up McDavid’s OT game winner. In a chippy game that saw numerous pushing and shoving after the whistle, each team only accumulated 4 PIM’S each and both teams only had 1 PP. Jake Allen was the star of the game with 30 saves while Lucic and McDavid rounded out the 3 star selections for the game. Jason Spezza won 18 face offs for Deep Freeze.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The CBJ dominate the second period firing the canon twice and holding the Rangers scoreless. The third period is more of the same as the Brew Jackets are finally able to play some defense and hold the Rangers to two goals.<\/p>\n

Minneapolis comes out hot to start the game, taking a 3-0 lead on goals by Chara (5), Spezza (2), and Tkachuk (5). Chicago gets on the board with 5 minutes left in the first period when Kreider (1) deflects a shot from Hutton past Bobrovsky. Hossa (8) puts the Deep Freeze back up by 3 only a minute later, and Bernier takes over in net for the Cosa Nostra after Saros gives up 4 goals on 13 shots. Minneapolis holds a 4-1 lead heading into the first intermission.<\/p>\n

Pavelski (6) cracks Bernier barely a minute into the second period to make it 5-1 in favor of the Deep Freeze. The teams play 18 scoreless minutes to finish the period, while the Deep Freeze struggle to stay out of the penalty box but remains stout defensively on the penalty kill. The Cosa Nostra go 0-3 on the powerplay courtesy of 8 blocked shots by the Deep Freeze and some big stops from Bobrovsky.<\/p>\n

Minneapolis kills off another penalty early in the third period, but can’t stop Pastrnak (3) when he gets loose on a breakaway after stealing the puck from Hossa at the other end of the ice. Minneapolis still leads 5-2. As the Deep Freeze try to keep the Cosa Nostra at bay, they end up controlling much of the third period, and eventually Speeza (3) gets his second of the game to take a 6-2 lead with 23 seconds to go. The lead holds, and the Deep Freeze get a much needed win.<\/p>\n

Thunder Bay Nor’Westers<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nStruggling as we hit the Thanksgiving holidays, Thunder Bay made a trade acquiring Center Frans Nielsen and Defenseman Jeff Petry from Hampton in return for Pavel Zacha and Jake McCabe. Both Nielsen and Petry jumped right into the lineup.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Brentwood Bandits @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nThe early part of this game was sloppy with little success for either team. Brentwood,s Vermette scored at 6:53 of the 2nd period his 1st of the season to give the Bandits a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes. At 6:05 of the 3rd period Brentwood scored again. This time it was Sid Crosby his 11th and Brentwood look to be in control.<\/p>\n

Then the new 2nd line of the Nor’westers took control of the game. Seth Jones (6) scored to cut the lead to 1 goal. He was assisted by Couturier and smith. Three minutes later Couturier (7) scored to tie the game at 2-2 assisted by Ahtnaasiou and Smith. With just 19 seconds left in the game (19:41) and the hot line on the ice Andreas Athanasiou (1) assisted by Smith and Zaitsev won the game 3-2.<\/p>\n

Gibson played well in the Bandits goal making 30 saves.<\/p>\n

The Nor’Wester’s 2nd line of Athanasiou-Couturier-Smith all went +3 and dominated play in the 3rd period.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Hampton Blizzard @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nComing off a big victory the night before, Thunder Bay’s Athanasiou scored his 2nd goal of the season to give the Nor’Westers a 1-0 lead early in the 2nd period. With Nyquist in the sin bin for high sticking, Hampton’s Lee tied the game with a Power Play goal 1-1.<\/p>\n

Charlie Coyle scored late in the 3rd (18:29 his 7th of the season to push Thunder Bay ahead 2-1.<\/p>\n

Hampton pulled Carey Price with 0:50 to go, but it back fired as Thunder Bay’s Jake Muzzin scored not once but twice into Hampton’s empty net (19:16 & 19:39). Thunder Bay’s new 2nd line was one the ice once again at crunch time.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
