Corktown Suds @ Brentwood Bandits<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nThe Suds come to town to try to wash the Bandits out of 1st place.<\/p>\n

The big story in this game was Power Plays. Brentwood had NINE (9) and Corktown had ZERO (0). But Corktown penalty killing was AMAZING and kept Brentwood from scoring on the man advantage. 0-9 on the PP?? Ouch.<\/p>\n

But, other than that this game was all Brentwood. Out shooting Corktown 41-22. If it weren’t for Corktown’s Defense, this game would have been a blowout.<\/p>\n

Clearfield Bison<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nTwo home games for the league-leading Bison…ownership keeps waiting for the ‘regression’ shoe to drop (we know we aren’t a 120-point team)…is this the week it happens?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
California Regulators @ Clearfield Bison<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nWith a bit of a ‘cushion’ in the standings and facing a struggling team, Clearfield decides to gamble and rest leading goal scorer Rakell.<\/p>\n

That may not have been wise.<\/p>\n

Clearfield pushed the action early, and got the game’s first tallyfrom Tomas Hertl late in the first.<\/p>\n

Clearfield seemed to be in their comfort zone – defending a lead – when the roof caved in late in the second. Two goals within 63 seconds, both from the left dot, both over Bobby Lu’s (suddenly WEAK) glove hand – and the Regulators suddenly took the lead.<\/p>\n

Clearfield isn’t built to come from behind, and despite decent shot totals they dodn;t make much happen in the third. When Rask scored 13:48 into the third, with the way Grubauer was playing I knew it was all over but the shoutin’..and 3-1 was indeed the final.<\/p>\n

Clearfield game-planed to stop the Silfverberg line, and that worked…but man oh man did the Rask\/Schmaltz\/Zibanejad line kill us. Cumulatively they had 2 goals, 6 points, and were +9!<\/p>\n

The stats were pretty even…Clearfield led in shots 35-29 and in scoring chances 13-11. The Bison controlled faceoffs, winning 65%, but that’s more useful with a lead.<\/p>\n

STARS: #1 Schmaltz 1G 2A +3, #2 Grubauer 34 sv, #3 Rask 1G 1A +3.<\/p>\n

California has some very good talent, not sure why they have struggled so much!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Long Beach Ice Dogs @ Clearfield Bison<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nAfter a low-scoring, gentle (only 2 PPs total) game vs. CAL, we had an entirely different affair vs. Long Beach.<\/p>\n

Clearfield came out smoking, registering 3 goals in the first 7 minutes…the (well-rested) Rakell getting on the board for the Bison, along with Chimera and Koivu. With the stingy Bison D, we felt pretty confident that 3 goals would be enough.<\/p>\n

3 goals didn’t even win the PERIOD (Regression can be a cold-hearted witch!!).<\/p>\n

In what seems to be a troubling trend for Luongo, he allowed 3 goals in3:23 right before the end of the first to send us to intermission tied. Clearfield considered a goalie change, but left the veteran in there…and he promptly gave up a 4th goal – the HT goal for Jeff Skinner – 8 minutes into the second.<\/p>\n

That seemed to be a turning point, though…from there, Clearfield gradually took control of the game, generating plenty of chances..and Brodie got the tying tally at 18:19.<\/p>\n

The third period featured less shots but plenty more chances..and finally the newbie, Patrick Kane, burst through the D and beat Markstrom with just over 3 minutes to go. Clearfield withstood the late barrage by the Ice Dogs to claim a hard-fought 5-4 win.<\/p>\n

There were an incredible amount of scoring chances in this game – Clearfield had 27, LBD had 20! Shots were even, 33-32 CLE. The Bison won 66% of faceoffs, and that was important this time. Lots of PP action – CLE went 1-4, LBD went 2-5 with the man advantage.<\/p>\n

Hampton Blizzard<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nOne home game this week for Hampton and it’s against the Wasau Lumberjacks.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Wausau Lumberjacks @ Hampton Blizzard<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nThe Lumberjacks got on the board first with a power play goal on a 5-on-3 in the first period by Dumba assisted by Zucker and Bourque.
\nFrom then on the game was pretty much all Hampton with the Blizzard outshooting the Lumberjacks 33-16 after a 12-12 first period. Trocheck tipped in a weak shot by Malkin early in the 3rd period to tie the game up, finally beating Jimmy Howard.
\nHoward was the story of the game though blanking the Blizzard for the rest of the period. With the Blizzard bracing for overtime the puck popped loose in front of Carey Price and Giroux drew the puck back to Palat whose nifty cross-ice feed was rifled home by Dumba for his 2nd of the game to give the Lumberjacks the 2-1 win.
\nHampton pulled the goalie with a minute to go but failed to register a shot.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nLong Beach had goals by Bozak(5) and two by Marner(6\/7).After scoring 5 times in the opening period and leading 5-1 after 20 minutes. This game was over.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
LA Great Danes @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nJamie Benn(9) opened the scoring giving LA a 1-0 lead after 1 period of play. Thunder Bay scored twice in the 2nd period Athanaasiou(12) and Saad(9) to re-gain the lead 2-1 after 40 minutes.<\/p>\n

Then Ben Bishop broke down giving up 2 goals in the 3rd period on just 7 shots. Schenn(10) and Jokinen(7) stole a win on the road 3-2.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Bucks County Racoons @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nBishop continued to disentergrate giving up 6 goals on just 27 shots. Moore(6&7), Lucic(9), Kane(6), Johansson(9&10), while Thunder Bay scored just twice Reilly Smith(6) and Coyle(11)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Weekly Summary:<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nAnother very disappointing week for Thunder Bay. It is very clear here at the half way point that we are not a play-off team unless we can find some consistent goal tending and we maybe too far out of the race already.<\/p>\n

Jagr Mullets<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nJagr’s had an inconsistent year, resulting in two major roster shakeups. Has the proper balance been found?<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Clearfield Bison @ Jagr Mullets<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nPowerhouse Clearfield comes to town – can they add to their league-high 50 points?<\/p>\n

When you’re playing the best team in the league, the last thing you want to do is spend a lot of time in the penalty box; generally not a formula for success. But Jagr practically lives in the sin bin, collecting 29 PIM (including a game misconduct for Radulov).<\/p>\n

But the Mullets hold the Bison to only 1 goal on 6 power-plays; and they dictate play most of the game thanks to a huge 60.9% advantage in the faceoff circle. Jagr also intimidates Clearfield by out-hitting them 27-17.<\/p>\n

Forty six seconds into the 2nd period, Jagr is up 3-1 thanks to huge contributions from the newly acquired Roman Polak, Hampus Lindholm, and Marian Gaborik who all score goals.<\/p>\n

By 3:28 in the 3rd, it’s a 3-3 game as Clearfield gets a goal from Jagr against Jagr (BOOM!) and Bergeron. But Patrik Laine (17) and Nazem Kadri (22) pad their stats even more to pull ahead 5-3. Patrick Kane (10) scores in the back half of the 3rd to make it interesting, but Alec Martinez’ empty netter with 1 minute remaining seals the 6-4 Mullet victory.<\/p>\n

While not brothers in real life, they acted like it on the ice — the united Lindholms tear it up.
\nHampus gets a goal and assist in his Jagr debut, while Elias collects 3 assists in the game.<\/p>\n

One man — new #1 Mullet goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy — says no. He stops all 32 shots en route to a 2-0 shutout of the Suds.<\/p>\n

Taylor Hall provides all the offense Jagr needs, scoring his 8th and 9th goals on the season.<\/p>\n

Jagr totally dominates the faceoff circle 72.9% to 27.1%, and has a huge edge in shot attempts 88-52. The Mullet PP is still ice cold, however – a concern to watch.<\/p>\n

LA Great Danes<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n3 Home games for the Danes, who spent the holiday break working on their league-worst power play. No easy games in the MWHL, but a favorable schedule with the home games against 3 sub .500 teams.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Bathgate Rangers @ LA Great Danes<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\nMark Scheifele starts things off quickly with a goal 1:23 into the game off a 2 on 1, and John Carlson extends the lead with a goal at 16:49 of the 1st. No PP chances for either team in the first, but the Danes get 3 PP chances in period 2, including a 1-minute 5 on 3. Nothing has changed as the Danes fail to convert and hold the 2-0 lead going into the 3rd. Things go badly in the 3rd for LA, starting with pest Andrew Shaw’s first goal of the year on a 3 on 1 just 1:44 in. 14 Seconds later, Zajac takes a double-minor for high-sticking and the Danes again fail on the PP. LA takes a penalty at 12:31, and the Rangers show LA what a PP looks like, with Ferland scoring to tie the game 2-2. Less than a minute later, the Danes get their 6th PP chance of the game, and they are totally disorganized and do nothing. At this point, LA hopes to at least salvage a point and get to OT. But, the Danes high-priced defense proves their worth, as Ryan Suter, who ended the Danes last game before the break with an OT winner, scored another game-winner with 1:51 left. The Danes get the win despite their special teams – 0-6 on the PP, and the Rangers go 1-1.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
New Jersey Grizzlies @ LA Great Danes<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n11 Minutes into the game, all hell breaks loose – Perry and Suter get into a fight, with Perry decking Suter, and Johansen and Kesler engage and fight to a draw. Somehow, Suter also gets a game misconduct, with everyone else receiving 5-minute majors. Things settle down after that, and Pietrangelo opens the scoring at 18:04 of the first. Draisaitl got NJ even with a PPG late in period 2, but LA responds with a PPG of their own by Kesler in the last minute of the period to take a 2-1 lead into the 3rd period. The Grizzlies then get a little chippy and take 3 penalties in the 3rd period, and the Danes respond with a tremendous 3rd period. 4 3rd period goals by LA, 2 on the PP as they pull away for a 6-1 win, outshooting NJ 23-7 and out-chancing them 12-0 in the 3rd. 3 Goals from defensemen for LA in this one, with Pietrangelo and Hamilton earning the first 2 stars with 1G-1A each, and Carlson adding a PPG in the 3rd. Ehlers assisted on the game’s last 3 goals, and Scheifele also added 3 assists. Best of all, 3-5 on the PP for the Danes.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Toledo Walleye @ LA Great Danes<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n1:35 in, Barrie takes a 4-minute high sticking penalty, and …. wait for it …. a POWER PLAY GOAL by the Danes from Alex Pietrangelo just 3:28 in. But, LA’s PK, not strong the first part of the year, seems to be getting worse as Krejci ties the game on a PPG at 11:12 of the first. It stayed that way until 4th liner Mikkel Boedker beat Dubnyk on a breakaway at 16:12 of the 2nd. Mark Scheifle the got a key insurance goal at 8:11 of the 3rd to give the Danes a 3-1 lead. Toledo competed hard all night and outchanced LA 19-12 for the game, but a strong outing in goal by backup Steve Mason and a physical Danes D, led by Brayden McNabb’s 6 hits in 13 minutes of ice time, kept Toledo off the board the rest of the way. Scheifele is red-hot (see the weekly recap), earning the game’s first star with 1G-1A.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Gilbert jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 1, but BC rebounded with 3 in the 2nd, two of the goals coming from the 3rd line. The Walleye used a balanced attack with goals from 5 players. Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill. Dubnyk saves 17 of 19.

In the 3rd period Toledo is able to stay in the Columbus zone most of the time throwing 15 shots at Budaj, apparently wearing him down as they light the lamp 3 times with Anisimov, Krejci and Brouwer converting to tie the game in regulation. Overtime is short lived as Okposo ends the game 22 seconds into the extra frame.
