Bathgate skates a bit more agressive than the Miners in the 1st (11-9 SOGs) but they have face-off issues. BUT, the bright spot happened 49 seconds into the game when Buchnevich put a nice move around Cirelli and beats the Bob to make it 1-0 Rangers. Then the games became one of passing, hitting, blocks and shots – well shots for Pittsburgh but the game goes scoreless for the next 43 minutes! Miners take a 14-8 SOG lead in the 2nd, but none of them go in.<\/p>\n

We head into the 3rd still sitting at 1-0 Rangers when Tuch goes off for charging. Hertl and company team up for PP goal at the 3:48 mark and it’s 2-0 Bathgate. Teams really go after each other now – Miners all out offense, Rangers all out defense. But we head into the final 120 seconds still sitting at 2-0. But then the hard nose play of the Miners finally pays off. Less than 2 minutes and the Miners pepper Halad and even after a Rangers timeout, the Miners win a faceoff in the Bathgate end and Kadri fires high and it gets past Halak and Pittsburgh is suddenly 1 goal away from a tie with 100 seconds to go. So Kadri wins the ensuing face-off, Bobrovsky heads to the bench. Kadri shots, doesn’t get through, Beauvillier gets it, he’s pressured, Ritchie grabs it, to Pionk, to Provorov – shots – scores EN goal and it 3-1 Rangers with 1:08 to go. After the next faceoff the Rangers lose the puck and Beauvillier gets a shot off this time, and Halak gloves it and holds on. In the Rangers end, Kadri again wins the FO – Yamamoto has it, to Kadri, to Ferraro, to Tuch, shoots, deflected by Kadri – oh, just off target, but Beauvillier gets it, looks to find the opening, shoots low – save by Halak, to Oleksiak, to Donskoi, to Ritchie to Hertl – he shoots and puts it in the EN for a layer of icing on the now big 4-1 Cake. Rangers get 4 shots on goal in the 3rd period – 3 go in and 2 were against no goalie! FINAL 4-1.

Too little, too late however and Danault adds an empty netter to make the 4-1 final score<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Toledo 4, Gilbert 2 – Toledo looks very tired, getting only 6 shots in the first period. Gilbert brings the energy however, and controls play. After 9 minutes of nothing, Gilbert breaks the ice with a goal from Niederreiter to get things going. That seems to ignite the Walleye, and Petey gets the game even with his goal 4 minutes later. 1-1 at the break.<\/p>\n

2nd period the Walleye go full awake and rack up 16 shots. On the Sharks side, Hedman comes out of the locker room with an attitude, and draws 2 minors in the first 5 minutes. But his team mates kill both off. On the scoreboard, only a goal from Arvidsson . Meanwhile, the Walleye defense is solid, and the Sharks draw no blood. The little fish have the lead at break 2-1.<\/p>\n

3rd period the Walleye get an insurance goal early with a bomb from Keith and the Walleye move with confidence. The Sharks tighten things up just past the midway mark, when Zuccarella scores, and we got a tight one with 8 minutes to go. Both defenses play well and the Sharks are forced to pull the goalie to get an edge. After a flurry of shots get stopped by Petersen, the Walleye break out with a rush down the rink and Mangiapane finds the empty net to seal the win at 4-2.<\/p>\n

Both teams perfect on the PK.<\/p>\n

Toledo 5, Chicago 2 – For once, the Walleye start strong. Goals by Bailey and vanRiemsdyk give then a 2 goal lead. Feeling pretty good, they relax and watch as Weegar whacks in a goal in the final minute, taking a little wind out of the sails. 2-1 Walleye.<\/p>\n

2nd period – Defense rules. Each team gets one PK oppotunity and the Walleye succeed while the Cosa Nostra, not so much, as Barrie gets the only goal of the period on a blast after the penalty by SMith. Its 3-1 after 2.<\/p>\n

Another Ty Smith penalty, another power play goal for the Walleye early on, as Trocheck pushes the lead to 3. Teams play even another 15 minutes before DeBrincat pops in a rebound to make it 4-2. But only 3 minutes to go. Chicago pulls the goalie and mounts a good attack, but nothing comes of it. Finally the puck changes hands, into the neutral zone, and Robertson joins the party with an empty netter, making the final 5-2. Big day for the 1st line.<\/p>\n

Boy have the Bandits been impressive, undefeated through 3 weeks. They are due for a letdown, right?<\/p>\n

LA scores first on a Krejci goal and leads 1-0 after one. Then the Danes explode with 3 goals in the second, 2 on the power play – Ehlers, Gourde, and Voracek the goal scorers.<\/p>\n

With a 4-0 lead heading to the third, it’s shutdown time. Brentwood doesn’t get a shot until 10 1\/2 minutes in, SOG in the 3rd are just 5-5, and Igor Shesterkin gets the shutout in LA’s 4-0 win.<\/p>\n

Three stars are Shesterkin with 21 saves, and Ehlers and Voracek with 1G-1A each, the goals both coming on the power play. But perhaps the most noticeable Dane in this one was Roope Hintz, only 1 assist but with 11 SOG and 11 SC’s, he was a dominant factor.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Remaining 3 games for the week are all against Pacific Division opponents, 2 at home. And after no goals against Brentwood despite all the shots and chances, it’s Roope Hintz who strikes early with a goal 3:20 into the contest. Two minutes later, Hintz scores again off a 2 on 1. Two quick goals, both assisted by David Krejci. Wait, are the fans booing? – No it’s Roooooope that we hear from the crowd. After the game, Roope said he was not frustrated by the Brentwood game, that if he continued to shoot the goals would come.<\/p>\n

Brock Boeser makes it 3-0 LA with a PPG. The Danes lead 3-0 and aren’t done when Nikolaj Ehlers makes it 4-0 with a goal later in the period. In the second, after an LA penalty kill, Samuel Girard takes a double-minor for cross-checking. Alamo, desperate to get back in the game, overwhelms LA during the power play but can’t beat Varlamov – 8 shots on the PP and perhaps an equal number of blocks by LA. So no scoring in period 2, and the Danes once again go to the 3rd period with a 4-0 lead.<\/p>\n

Claude Giroux adds a late goal for LA, but Charlie McAvoy spoils Varlamov’s shutout bid with a goal for Alamo with just 1:06 left.<\/p>\n

But another nice win for the home team, this one by a 5-1 score. Hintz is the #1 star with 2G-1A, Ehlers is #2 with 1G-1A for the second straight game, and Varlamov is #3 with 30 saves.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

LA GREAT DANES<\/span><\/th>\n

Next up is Gilbert, a team that’s off to a slow start but has lots of talent and is a dangerous team.<\/p>\n

And Gilbert jumps on LA early, with Kevin Fiala scoring goals on the Sharks’ first 2 chances of the game. Then Brady Tkachuk and William Nylander mix things up after the whistle – looked to be coincidental minors, but Nylander for roughing is the lone penalty call. Seconds after the PP ends, Burakovsky puts Gilbert up 3-0. But Makar takes a penalty with just 17 seconds left in the period, and Voracek gets a PPG for LA with just 2 seconds left in the period. So LA is down 3-1, but maybe the late goal with give the Danes momentum in period 2. But when Eric Haula scores off a bad rebound to put Gilbert up 4-1, LA decides it’s not Varly’s night as Gilbert’s 4 goals come on just 6 chances, and Shesterkin takes over in net for the Danes. After that, Gilbert has no shots on 2 straight power plays, but the Sharks take a commanding 4-1 lead into the 3rd period. With ex-LA goalie Merzlikins looking sharp, this looks like an off-night for LA.<\/p>\n

But 2 goals in 21 seconds brings the Danes within one at 4-3 with 15 minutes still to play. The Danes keep the pressure on and get a power play opportunity midway through the period with a chance to tie it up. But Merzlikins is solid, and the Danes cannot convert despite 5 scoring chances on the power play. LA continues to dominate but so does Elvis. The Danes keep coming, and Nikolaj Ehlers scores to tie the game with 26 seconds remaining. Merzlikins has to make one last save on a chance by Brock Boeser with 5 seconds left, and regulation ends with a 4-4 score.<\/p>\n

Despite a good start, the Buzzards needed to capitalize on three home games on the schedule this week — and avoid slipping back.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

In a tight-defensive game that is as evenly played as they come, the Buzzards eked out an overtime win decided by shootout, 3-2, over a Bucks County squad that played much better than its early season record indicates.<\/p>\n

The narrow difference for all intents and purposes was Charlotte goalie Chris Driedger stopping shootout legends Connor McDavid and TJ Oshie during that OT shootout stage — while the Buzzards Brad Marchand and Carter Verhaeghe converted their attempts against Raccoons goalie Anton Khudobin.<\/p>\n

Charlotte outshot Bucks County just 34-33 in regulation and two Raccoons, Drew Doughty and Tom Wilson, actually earned the top two three-star selections. Their goals gave the Raccoons a 2-1 lead before Charlotte center Pavel Zacha knotted things up at 2-2 with 8:50 left in the third, assisted by Alex Pietrangelo and Marchand.<\/p>\n

Khudobin finished with 32 saves and Driedger recorded 31 in a goalie dual.<\/p>\n

In a key division matchup the Buzzards won yet another defensive battle, this time pitching a shutout over the NorWesters, 2-0.<\/p>\n

Ilya Sorokin was perfect for Charlotte with 27 saves, including turning away 15 shots in the third as the NorWesters threatened late. Even strength goals in the first and second periods by wingers Bryan Rust and Brendan Gallagher (just inserted into the lineup), held up.<\/p>\n

Casey DeSmith also excelled for Thunder Bay in the net, with 29 saves, including 19 in the first period that kept things close.<\/p>\n

The Carter Verhaeghe show was in full display as the Buzzards, after two-hard fought games, skated their way to an easier 6-1 victory. Hats rained down onto the Bojangles Arena ice just past the midway point of the game, after Verhaeghe had scored his third goal at the 10:43 mark of the second — propelling the Buzzards to a 4-1 lead that was never threatened.<\/p>\n

Portland peppered Charlotte goalie Sorokin with 34 shots through the evening, 12 more than Charlotte, but except for a late first-period Joel Farabee goal that narrowed the Storm deficit to 2-1, could not find the net. Additionally, Charlotte’s Scott Mayfield blocked five shots.<\/p>\n

Verhaeghe scored two unanswered goals (with Ryan Johansen assisting on both) after Farabee had scored.<\/p>\n

After years of losing & inherited salary-cap jail (finally escaped), the Buzzards are off to their best start ever, having built a balanced attack around Brad Marchand, Mitch Marner, Alex Pietrangelo, Dougie Hamilton and a thus-far sensational goalie trio of Ilya Sorokin, Chris Driedger and Jake Allen.
