While the Great Danes have lost an early-season 8-point lead over California in the Pacific Division standings, now trail them by a single point, and face a continuing stretch on the road, LA is resting Roope Hintz this week to avoid losing games from him down the road.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

First home game in forever, and both teams play tight defensively in period one with SOG only 8-6. Mark Scheifele opens the scoring late in the period, scoring 8 seconds after LA fails to convert on the power play.<\/p>\n

In the second, immediately after an LA penalty kill, Aleksander Barkov gets a breakaway and beats Samsonov for an unassisted goal, and it’s 2-0 LA after two.<\/p>\n

Darnell Nurse puts the game away with 5:45 left in the 3rd, and the Danes come away with a 3-0 victory.<\/p>\n

Semyon Varlamov with 30 saves for the shutout, but LA outchances Thunder Bay 29-10 despite getting outshot 28-30.<\/p>\n

So, a good effort at home for LA. Nico Hischier makes his season debut and is rusty in the face-off circle, winning only 3 of 11 faceoffs. But he contributes on the PK, as the Danes kill off 4 Thunder Bay PP’s (but go 0-5 on their own PP’s).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nGame starts rough for Jake as Sanheim scores for Bathgate inside the opening 2 minutes. Donskoi makes it 2-0 Rangers 7 1\/2 minutes in, the Hagel gets a PP goal midway through the 1st and Vrana makes it 4-0 Bathgate a minute later and Oettinger exits. Guess his time on the ice in Bathgate was not meant to be (then and now). But that did give the Storm some incentive and when Zaitsev goes off for a minor, Dumba scores a SH goal to make it 4-1 with 5 1\/2 to go. Brown scores another Storm goal a minute later and the wild 1st ends 4-2 Bathgate.Then 4 minutes into the 2nd, Brown scores again (PP) and it’s a one goal game. But as the 2nd is drawing to a close, Josh Anderson puts one past Binnington to give Bathgate a 5-3 lead after 2.But, the Rangers can’t keep that lead as Olofsson scores 9 minutes into the 3rd, 5-4. But 20 seconds later Oleksiak scores for the Rangers and it’s a 2 goal game again. Inside 2 minutes, Portland with the extra skate and it works as Comtois scores to make it 6-5. They keep pressing, but Pionk nets an EN goal for a 7-5 lead with 29 seconds left, but Portland keeps coming and with 4 seconds left the Storm score again – they don’t win or tie, but Brown gets a hat trick. Final 7-6 Bathgate.<\/p>\n

Chicago comes to town to try to right their ship, and sink the Bandits barge at the same time.<\/p>\n

Here’s how it played out…<\/p>\n

The first period was ALL Chicago as they out-shoot the Bandits 16-7, but it’s Guentzel (14) who scores with 18 seconds left in the period! Vasilevskiy stops all 16 shots he faced in the 1st period.<\/p>\n

To the second period… Bandits come out firing until Kessel (10) continues to enjoy his return “home” to Brentwood by scoring at 3:17 of the period, giving the Bandits a 2-0 lead! That would be all the scoring in the period.<\/p>\n

To the third period we go… A very even period, despite Chicago pushing. As we wind down to just over a minute to play, Saros is pulled… Karlsson fires at the empty net and misses! Vasilevskiy stands tall and makes save after save, until Pavelski rushes the puck out from the Bandits zone, through the neutral zone, over the blue line, flips it toward the empty cage… and it’s in! An empty netter for Pavelski (26) as he continues to flip off Father Time.<\/p>\n

The Bandits win 3-0 as Vasilevskiy plays a gem of a game, saving all 35 shots thrown at him, including some great saves! His 4th shutout of the campaign and 20th win of the season.<\/p>\n

Saros didn’t play bad, but two mistakes cost the Cosa Nostra netminder.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

WEEKLY PREVIEW:<\/span><\/th>\nConsider this the Jim Mora edition of the Charlotte Buzzards’ weekly report. To paraphrase the immortal words of the former Colts and Saints NFL head coach: “Playoffs? We’re just trying to win a game.” Things have gone from bad to worse after three straight reported losses this week on the road — two of those by one goal in regulation as those types of close defeats start to pile up. This team was dropping fast in the Atlantic division and desperate for a win as it hosted Alamo in its lone home game this week.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

ALAMO DEFENDERS<\/span><\/p>\n

CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS<\/span><\/th>\n

The Buzzards, who have had a miserable stretch trying to win any game out of their building, got a nail-biting 5-2 win over the Defenders in a home victory hardly as decisive as the final score might suggest. In the hard-fought contest not settled until the bitter end, Brad Marchand, the league’s leading scorer entering this week of play, delivered the game-winning goal for Charlotte to break a 2-2 tie with just 2:26 remaining on the clock; from there defenseman Dougie Hamilton found a pair of open net goals for Charlotte in that last minute played.<\/p>\n

Charlotte held just a 1-0 lead entering the third. Third period goals by Alamo’s Eeli Tolavannen and Boone Jenner, as well as outstanding defensive efforts by Ryan Ellis (nine blocked shots) and goalie Joonas Korpisalo (32 saves) helped bring the Defenders to a 2-2 standstill before Charlotte struck three times in the waning moments of play. The Buzzards, who outshot the Defenders 37-30, also got a goal apiece from Mitch Marner and Bryan Rust.<\/p>\n

WEEKLY SUMMARY:<\/span><\/th>\nCharlotte is clearly mired in quicksand, having lost nine out of 13 to drop to 22-19-2 but gets a needed home-win. It pathetically scored just four goals in its three latest road losses — and Charlotte only had a goal in the first two periods of play in this contest at home before eking out a win at the end. As far as offense goes, there is Brad Marchand and not much else. The way things have gone so downhill, a winning record may prove hard enough to attain, let alone this team’s first every playoff appearance.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

William Karlson’s tenth goal of the season, on the power play, at 9:11 of the third period broke a 2-2 tie and closed out the scoring in Cincinnati’s 3-2 win over Alamo.<\/p>\n

In a very evenly played game (shots favored Alamo, 24-23, blocks were even at 15 each and both teams had two power play chances), The Inferno were able to win a game that they never trailed.<\/p>\n

Max Pacioretty and Tyler Toffoli had the other goals for Cincinnati, while Ryan Ellis and Sidney Crosby lit the lamp for Alamo. Cam Talbot picked up the win (his fifth) with 22 saves, while Joonas Korpisalo turned away 20 for the Defenders.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Cincinnati raced to a 3-1 first period lead and held on against the defending Stanley Cup champs. Tyler Toffoli scored two goals to pace the Inferno attack.<\/p>\n

William Karlsson may have played his best game of the season for Cincinnati, notching an assist–but winning 20 of the 27 faceoffs he participated in. Nick Ritchie and Tomas Hertl had the goals for Bathgate.<\/p>\n

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 29 shots to collect his 17th win of the season. Alexandar Georgiev turned away 21 for the Rangers.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The one bright spot of the year so far for the Miners is Alex Nedalkovic (Spelled wrong and do not want to look up the spelling to lazy), but anyways he was spectacular in net against the division leading Inferno. During the first period there was a tribute video played for former Miner Alex Tuch, who was brought to tears in the video. Owner of the Miners Zach Creinin commented that “Alex Tuch was a bright young player and was having a good season but in order to win you have to have good players around great players and thats what we needed good players.” Back to the game. It was 0-0 after the 2nd period. Not many SC for either side but in the third period the Miners scored on a weird bounce of the boards and funny enough it was Patrick Laine the main piece acquired in return for Alex Tuch got the goal and after Nedalkovic faced 15 shots and the Inferno going 0-2 on the Power play in the third, the Miners Squeaked out the 1-0 Shutout victory.<\/p>\n

In very atypical fashion, the Walleye get a quick goal, from an unlikely source, with Benn getting his 4th of the season just 2 minutes into the game. After that its a bunch of weak efforts by each offense as the defenses are on gameplan. Both teams kill off one minor, and we go to break 1-0 Walleye.<\/p>\n

2nd period sees more defensive domination. In the middle of the period some frustration surfaces and both teams rack up 2 minors each. But all the PK units are on point and this scoreless period mercifully ends with no change to the score.<\/p>\n

3rd period the crowd is a bit nervous as we have not seen a shutout in ages, which means something is about to break. Fortunately for the Toledo faithful, its a Mangiapane goal 5 minutes in that moves the scoreboard to 2 for the fishes. Hague and Keith in a little skirmish a minute later with no consequences. A Muzzin minor penalty opens the door for the Miners with 6 minutes to go, but they manage not to score,….. until just after the penalty expires and just as Muzzin comes back on ice, its Beauvillier with his 5th of the season to make things tight again. 2-1. Petersen and the defense are able to withstand the usual barrage of shots after the Miners pull the goalie, and the Walleye excape this one with the W<\/p>\n

In a repeat of the earlier game, its Toledo with the first goal, and once again its Benn, 6 minutes in, to make it 1-0. Toledo dominates play in the first period allowing the visitors only 4 SOG, while racking up a pile of blocked shots. Gilbert kills off a minor after the Benn goal, and shortly after the kill, Kempe scores another for the Walleye to make it 2-0… and we go to intermission.<\/p>\n

Must have been a good locker room talk, as Gilbert gets on the board with a goal from Burakovsky just 50 seconds into the 2nd period. Balanced play in this period with the only other significant event another PK by Gilbert. We to to intermission 2-1 Walleye.<\/p>\n

The Gilbert attack ramps up in the 3rd, with 14 SOG. Its the Walleye scoring first, with a rare goal from Bailey, his 2nd of the season, to make it 3-1. near the middle of the period, Zuccarello cuts the lead to 1, and we are in pucker up time. Walleye are able to continue the frustration of the Sharks, including the mandatory pulled goalie onslaught of shots, and finally the capture the puck and pin it to the boards the final 15 seconds to preserve this squeaky win. Only 2 minor penalties the entire game.<\/p>\n

WEEKLY SUMMARY:<\/span><\/th>\nThank goodness the defense was up to task and the offensive effort was less than solid. Also good to see Mr. Benn wake up and net some shots. Practice will focus on some new offensive sets this week. But in the end, always good to win 2 of 2 at home.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Danes scored twice within 47 seconds in the 2nd period (Kapenen and Nurse), but Oshie cut the lead in half with a PP goal at 8:52. Stephenson for LA scored a killer goal short handed at 23 seconds of the 3rd period for a 3-1 lead, but Oshie again cut the deficit to one with a goal with 1;54 left. BCR pulled the goalie to no avail and the Great Danes came away with the 3-2 win.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
