Hampton heads into the inaugural season full of piss and vinegar with the hopes of at least a .500 season as they wait for Carey Price to come online. With the “Endless Wave” attack of four lines of 20-goal scorers and one of the NHL’s best performers in the nets in 2015-2016 in Brian Elliott home the team had high hopes heading into the season as did the sold out Kings Ice Complex faithful.<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

GAME ONE – NEW JERSEY at HAMPTON
\nBlame Kate Upton for this one. The knockout pinup girl not only dropped the puck at the ceremonial opening faceoff, but also apparently got the two teams blood boiling as they immediately established an east coast hate on for each other. Why Kate Upton? It’s Kate Upton, man … she can drop whatever she wants when she wants (just ask Justin Verlander). But I digress … after a high octane end-to-end first period that saw Corey Schneider (NJ) and Brian Elliott (HAM) build impenetrable walls Mikael Backlund broke the deadlock two minutes into the 2nd period with a nifty backhander over the pads of the Jersey netminder.\u00a0 Only 50 seconds later center Frans Nielsen deflected Mattias Eckholm’s shot from the point past the sprawling Schneider-man and just like that it was 2-0 Hampton and the crowd was going wild. Passions flared a few minutes later as Dennis Wideman and Scott Laughton beat the stuffing out of pacifists Vincent Trocheck and Jason Demers. The 2nd period ended with Hampton up 2-0 on the scoreboard but down 2-0 on the ass-whipping count. Jersey winger Viktor Arvidsson brought the Grizzlies to within one five minutes into the 3rd on a beautiful deke around Elliott that had the goalkeeper faked right out of his jock strap. Kyle Okposo evened things up a couple of minutes later on the power play with a nifty give and go around the\u00a0 beleaguered Hampton defenders. Jamie McGinn gave Hampton the lead with less than five minutes left on a rebound off a point shot by defenceman Tyler Myers, but Kyle Okposo erased the lead a minute later with his 2nd goal of the game on an unassisted wrist shot over the glove of the Hampton goalie. Overtime came and went with no goals scored and the teams went to the much hated stupid shootout, but with ace-in-the-hole can’t miss Frans Nielsen on the docket to shoot for Hampton the hometown fans were optimistic.\u00a0 Crash, bang, boom went that optimism as Schneider stoned the can’t miss Nielsen and Filip Forsberg while Okposo and Kyle Turris scored to give New Jersey the 4-3 shootout win.

GAME TWO – INDIANA at HAMPTON
\nOver-the-hill should be washed up Mark Streit rifled a shot through a screen of players midway through overtime to snag a 3-2 win for Indiana over Hampton.\u00a0 The 2nd overtime failure in as many games for Hampton capped a game which for the most part had Hampton just trying to keep pace with the high-flying Sycamores.\u00a0 Hampton goaltender Brian Elliott made 33 saves in the contest, but wound up on the losing end nonetheless. Justin Williams opened the scoring for Indiana midway through the 1st period when he batted a rebound off Drew Doughty’s point shot out of the air and past Elliott on a delayed power play. Jannik Hansen drew the teams even early in the third period on a shot from the slot. Vincent Trocheck gave the Blizzard the least with less than three minutes left in the game when he fired a blistering shot between the pads of Roberto Luongo, but Jaromir Jagr brought things to an even keel two minutes later with the net empty on a wrist shot just inside the post that beat Elliott low.

GAME THREE – ALAMO at HAMPTON
\nThe righting of the ship ended with the wronging of Antti Raanta as once again Hampton’s inability to score in a shootout bit them in the ass (picture JAWS taking a chomp of Oprah Winfrey) as Alamo edged the Blizzard 4-3.
\nSupreme asshole Brad Marchand opened the scoring for Alamo midway through the 1st period on an easy tap in of a rebound past Raanta. Tomas Hertl evened things up with three minutes left in the 1st period when he tipped Aaron Ekblad’s slapshot past Lehner. Another deflection off the stick of Vincent Trocheck less than two minutes later gave Hampton a 2-1 lead heading into the 2nd period. The lead lasted all of four minutes when from beind the net Max Pacioretty slid a pass through the crease to Joe Thornton’s awaiting stick and the veteran Shark wasted no time in banking it in to make it a 2-2 tie.
\nTrocheck gave Hampton the lead again on a deflection of Andrej Sekera’s shot with just under 8 minutes left in the 2nd. Johnny Boychuk’s slapshot from the point heard around the world banked in off the crossbar halfway through the 3rd period to even it up 3-3 to set the stage for the Hampton shootout crapout in which Pacioretty and Marchand both scored and Nielsen and Forsberg continued their dry spells.

GAME FOUR – LANSING at HAMPTON
\nThe Blizzard beat the Lansing defenders black and blue, but left green with envy as Devan Dubnyk baffled the Hampton shooters in a 2-1 win by the visitors. After losing four straight at home there’s not much left in the tank to
\nwrite about but the Capitals were brilliant in blocking 27 of the 75 shot attempts by Hampton. For Hampton, it was the same story and lots of low quality shots never making it to the net as they out shot in attempts Lansing by a lopsided 75-40 margin. Hampton held a 1-0 lead after the first period on a slapshot by Jason Demers from the top of the faceoff circle, but Lansing came back with goals by Niklas Backstrom and Michael Steen in the 2nd period to
\nconclude the scoring.<\/p>\n

Long Beach got on the board with two quick goals but New Jersey stormed back with 4 goals to take a commanding lead only to see Long Beach tie the game. 1:48 into the third Arvidsson gave NJ the lead and Sedin add some insurance late in the third to ice the game. NJ will enjoy this mini home stand with the

5:47 into the first period and the Rangers score on their first PP after Keith goes off for elbowing. Scoring play – Staal shot is saved by Halak but Donskoi gobbles up the rebound and puts it in the net for the score (1).<\/p>\n

Bathgate then proceeds to score a 2nd time in the opening period at the 2:42 mark when Donskoi (2) redirects a shot from Russell and the Rangers end the first period with a 2-0 lead.<\/p>\n

The 2nd period is highlighted by a Zuccarello 5 minute major for cross checking and later Palat going off for 4 minutes for high sticking. But Bathgate couldn’t capitalize on either of these advantages and the Lumberjacks stayed close. End of 2nd period still 2-0 Rangers.<\/p>\n

The 3rd period continued the defensive game as Bathgate continued to hold off the Lumberjacks, and Wausau continued to try to ramp up their scoring machine. With 4:13 remaining in regulation the Lumberjacks finally break through. After gaining the puck in their own end, they moved up ice. Perry fires it toward the net, Palat deflects it, it misses the net, but Kopitar gets it, one times it and SCORE (1). Rangers now up 2-1 and the Lumberjack pressure is just beginning. With 51.9 seconds left Halak is pulled, Girioux comes in as the extra attacker. Kopitar shot – blocked by Zajac, Chara shoots, blocked by Russell, and that was the last attempt as they turn over the puck with 8 seconds left and the Rangers pull off the win. Donskoi surprising 2 goals gets #1 star.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Long Beach comes into Brentwood to try to steal the Bandits thunder for their first ever home opener.<\/p>\n

The game saw Andersen vs Fleury as period one got under way.<\/p>\n

At 5:07 Long Beach opened the scoring on the PP with Bozak scoring his first of the season.<\/p>\n

Brentwood would strike back at 13:42 with Vern Fiddler (on the roof!), scoring the first ever Bandits goal assisted by Parenteau and Coburn.<\/p>\n

Second period tied at 1 when The Bandits jump out to a two goal lead with goals by Baertschi and Stempniak… but a back-breaker scored by Fabbri cuts the Bandit lead to 1.<\/p>\n

Entering the third the Bandits see the visiting Long Beach team put up two unanswered goals as Brentwood falls in the first game of their inaugural season.<\/p>\n

Jagr visits Brentwood for the first ever “Battle of the Brothers”.<\/p>\n

This Sanguine Showdown proved to be a good one!<\/p>\n

Jagr had Bishop between the pipes and Brentwood tried to change things up with Lundqvist in net.<\/p>\n

Brentwood started off the scoring at 7:48 of the first with Vern “Play me like a” Fiddler scored his second of the season assisted by Parenteau and Liles<\/p>\n

Second period saw Jordan Staal score his 4th of the season at 2:23 on the PP with assists by Abdelkader and Bailey and then Murphy with his first of the season assisted by Pavelski and Abdelkader<\/p>\n

Brentwood tied the game at 15:40 with Geno Malkin’s first of the season assisted by Sid Crosby and “Charles” Manson.<\/p>\n

The third period saw a serious battle. The story of this game was that there were 6 roughing penalties called. Jagr was 1-4 on the PP and Brentwood was 0-1. So Jagr was a bit more disciplined. Coach Tom Atkins needs to have a talk with his team.<\/p>\n

Anyway… a hard fought battle until the 3:24 mark with Janmark made his mark scoring his first of the season unassisted. That’s all Jagr needed. It doesn’t show in the box score, but Bishop stopped Crosby on a breakaway in the final minute of play to seal the victory for Jagr. Brentwood licks their wounds and scratches their heads as they are now 0-2 on the season.<\/p>\n

To start scoring off, Marleau scores his first of the season assisted by Boyes and Hainsey at 10:11<\/p>\n

About five minutes later Stone scored his second of the campaign assisted by Monahan and Methot.<\/p>\n

Less than a minute later at 16:24, Brentwood takes the lead again on a beautiful redirect goal by Crosby for his first of hopefully many this season. Assisting on the goal were Bieksa and Malkin.<\/p>\n

The third period saw great saves by both goaltenders until Brentwood would tack on an insurance goal at 15:57 by Marleau, his second of the season and the game, assisted by both of his line mates Geno and Sid.<\/p>\n

That’s all that was needed as Brentwood went on to win it’s first game of the season to start things off at 1-2 at home.<\/p>\n

Thunder Bay opens the season with three home games. The Thunderdome has been spruced up and is holding a parade in support of opening day. Expectations are never high in Thunder Bay as life here in the North Country is harsh and dreams are dashed when the cold winds blow in from the Northwest. First year head coach Jiri Fischer has set October goals at 2 games over .500 and the regular season goal is to make the play-offs.<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Second City Chiefs come to the Thunderdome to start the season. 3:46 into the game Chief’s rookie Shayne\u00a0 Gotisbehere is called for tripping. Just as the penalty is ending Alexander Barkov scores a power play goal to give Thunder Bay a 1-0 lead. Eberle follows with a goal to put the Nor’westers up 2-0. The Chiefs answer with a goal by Atkinson and the period ends with Thunder Bay leading 2-1.<\/p>\n

The 2nd period is dominated by 3 Thunder Bay penalties (Nyquist\/Holding), Reimer\/Delay of game and Goligoski\/Holding. The Chiefs out shot the home team 12-9, but Thundeer Bay got the periods lone goal when newly arrived
\nCalle Jarnkrok beat Tukka Rask to put the home team up 3-1.<\/p>\n

The 3r period was another Nor’westers penalty fest with 3 more (Jones\/tripping, DeKeyser\/Elbowing and then Brendan Gallagher wrestled with Palmiere and both got roughing calls. Before the parade of Nor’westers to the sin bin, Palmieri scored to close the gap to a single goal 3-2. The final 3 1\/2 minutes of the game was fun Rask went to the bench with 1:45 left and The Chiefs got 2 good scoring changes but the Nor’westers goalie James Reimer locked them out for the 3-2 win.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Next was New Jersey and they were out skating the home team. At 4:59 Bobby Ryan scored assisted by Henrik Sedin and Lingholm. Thunder bay recovered and the rest of the period was tight close play. Shots on goal were NJ\/12, TB\/13. NJ-1, TB-0<\/p>\n

Play really opened up in the 2nd period with end to end play and 4 goals. Shea Weber scored for the Grizzlies making it 2-0. Then Thunder Bay rallied with 2 goal to tie the game 2-2. The goals were by Tatar and Gallagher. Then late (18:55) Skinner put the visirors back in front 3-2 as the period ended. Shots on goal in the 2nd period 17-17. Where was the defense?????<\/p>\n

Early in the 3rd period Johansen score for New Jersey giving the me 2 goal lead 4-2. Thunder Bay’s Ryan O’Rielly scored at 18:05 to bring hope to the home crowd and closing the gap to 1 goal with 1:55 to play. Thunder Bay pulled Reimer with about a minute to play but Bobby Ryan found the open net to seal the deal with an empty netter. Final Score 5-3 New Jersey Win. Thunder Bay is now 1-1 on the season.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Indiana come to the North County for the final game of the homestand. For the 2nd game in a row the Nor’westers are sluggish is the 1st period and fall behind 2-1. The Sycamores got goals for Raffl and the ancient one (Jagr). Barkov keeps the Nor’westers close. Indiana out shoots Thunder Bay 14-6.<\/p>\n

Thunder Bay wakes up for the 2nd period scoring the only goal at 4:49. Saad from Muzzin and out shoots Indiana 11-7, shots on goal thru 2 periods IND\/21, TB\/17 Score tied at 2-2.<\/p>\n

The 3rd period is tight but Kulemin slips the puck past Joonas Korpisalo in his MWHL debut to give the Sycamores a 3-2 lead. As the clock wound down the Nor’westers tried three times to their goalie of the ice for an extra attack but as soon as he would head for the bench the Nor’westers would loose control of the puck and Korpisalo had to scramble back to defend. A disappointing opening home stand 1-2, but head coach Jiri Fisher remains positive. We obviously have some rough edges that we need to take care of, and we have to get better starts but other aspects of our game were sound. One area we need to spend some time on are
\nspecial teams play.When asked who he thought played well Fischer answered. Our defense had some very good stretches “Gogo” block a ton of shots (12) and Seth Jones made it very clear he is not going to be intimidated in the league. Long Beach takes the lead late in the period on a re-direction from Draisatl set up by Panarin and Leddy. They tack another one on during a 4-on-4 to make it 3-1.<\/p>\n

With SC playing aggressive all period, it is the visitors who get all the odd man rushes, adding three goals to finish the beat down.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
