Chicago Cosa Nostra
Weekly Preview:
Chicago has two home games against Eastern Conference opponents the Mullets of Jagr & the Flying Tigers of Lakeland.
Game #1:
Jagr & Chicago have a very intense rivalry in the short history of the Mid-West Hockey League & surprisingly this one was well short of the fist-a-cuffs that most were expecting. Chicago found themselves down 3-0 2 Minutes & 18 Seconds into the 1st Period. Coach Doug Gilmour (Rumors abound he might not be back for season #2) pulled Petr Mrazek & went with Mike Condon the rest of the way. Chicago scored 3 unanswered of their own, but the Mullets put up one early in the 3rd & one midway through the 3rd. It was more than the Cosa Nostra could handle.
Final Score: Jagr 5 – Chicago 3
Game #2:
A Home & Home this Series with the Flying Tigers of Lakeland didn’t go as Chicago planned at home. Despite being out shot 37-19, the Flying Tigers chipped in the only goal of the game at 10:36 of the 3rd Period. The Cosa Nostra couldn’t get anything by Jonathan Quick & the Flying Tigers played stellar defense late in the game.
Final Score: Lakeland 1 – Chicago 0
Weekly Summary:
Chicago loses both home games this series & they could end up being the worse franchise in the Mid-West Hockey League.

Jagr Mullets
Weekly Preview:
Two home games vs. Lansing and Second City.
Game #1: Lansing gets off the bus and gets right down to it, with Vanek (12) scoring 17 seconds in, and then Rakell (19) scoring at 5:14.Jagr clamps down however, and chips away at the lead. Joe Pavelski (38) scores at 17:58 of the 1st on the PP, and then scores again early in the 3rd to tie up the game 2-2. He has several other great chances for the natural hat trick, but ultimately the game goes to OT, then the shootout. Backstrom is the only one to put one in, and Lansing takes it 3-2.

The game featured one of the rarest of all anomalies — a true 3-on-3 in regulation! Don’t see that one very often.

Alec Martinez scores his 13th and 14th goals on the year for the Mullets, providing crucial offense from the blue line.

Joe Pavelski pots his 40th goal on the season, and also wins 24 face-offs – this guy IS the franchise and both a strong team and league MVP candidate.

Ben Bishop wins his 29th game of the year, and with 12 games remaining has an outside chance (really outside) to reach 40 on the year.

Weekly Summary:
The Mullets take 3 of a possible 4 points, and collected 2 points on the road vs. Chicago – we’ll take it!

moving into the line-up are Sheahan, Glendening, Zacha (1st game in MWHL) and returning from his rest Nestrasil.
Game #1:
Alamo (4) at Thunder Bay (1) – The Nor’Westers hung in but with so many scorers resting we could not put the puck in the net. Pearson opened the scoring for the Defenders his 11th of the season.
Backes (14) made it 2-0 in the 2nd period and Eller (5) push the lead to 3-0 early in the 3rd period. Athanasiou elevated to the 2nd line scored his 6th of the season closing the gap to 2 3-1, but
Burmistrov found the empty net late to make the final 4-1.

Hampton Blizzard
Weekly Preview:
Only one home game for Hampton this week and it comes in the form of a visit from the Ripon Rockets.
Game #1: The two teams fenced through an end-to-end 1st period with a goal apiece, but Hampton came through with three unanswered goals including an empty netter to win 4-1.
Forsberg got the Blizzard on the board first with a power play goal in a scramble in front of Ripon netminder Domingue. Ripon countered less than two minutes later with Toffoli ripping one past Raanta. For both goal scorers it was their 26th tally of the season.
The 2nd period saw some great penalty killing by Ripon when Jenner was sent off with a charging major. The Rockets dazzled the Blizzard for the five minutes leaving Scott Bowman scratching his head and kicking his players on the Hampton bench.
Even goaltender Antii Raanta got frustrated taking a two-minute minor for a random slash against a rocket whizzing too close to his crease.
Frans Nielsen finally solved the Domingue puzzle tipping Mattias Ekholm’s wrist shot into the Ripon net for his 16th of the season.
Alex Killorn put Hampton up 3-1 midway through the 3rd with a rush from the left side when he fired the puck high over Domnigue’s shoulder and into the top corner of the net.
Killorn added an empty netter to put him at 11 goals in a part-time role on the season.
Weekly Summary:
An entertaining and close game with a deceptively lop-sided score with Hampton getting a couple of breaks to win in its lone home game.

Lakeland comes into Lansing winners 3 of their last 4 Lansing has lost 6 of their last 10 and this will be their first game under new head coach Mike Borzenski
Game #1: Lakeland at Lansing

Not much action in the first 2 periods as very few good scoring threats, and the occasional power play with penalty kill units dominating. The new coach for Lansing experiments with different lines and strategies through the first 2 periods until Backstrom scores on a deflection late in the 2nd. Lansing offense gets it going well in the last period scoring 4 times to 2 scores for Lakeland. The last score for Lansing an empty netter. Final score Lansing 5, Lakeland 2.

Grabner and Weise with goals for the visitors
Backstrom, Rakell, Brouwer, Vanek and Chimera for the home team.

Brentwood Bandits
Weekly Preview:
Down the stretch Brentwood has rested up a lot of players and are finally started to get them back into the lineup just in time to make a push for the playoffs.
Game #1:
Flower blanks visiting Minneapolis 2-0.
Crosby nets his 35th and Stempniak (he of 19 REAL goals last season) nets just his 3rd of the season. Story here? Brentwood manages to take ZERO penalties. Are they learning to play disciplined at the right time? We shall see!!

Goals for Wausau: Holland (7), Palat (17), Fisher (16), Perry (29), Chara (11)

Indiana Sycamores
Weekly Preview:
Only 1 home game as the Sycamores prep for a crazy ending to the season – 13 of their last 15 on the road.
Game #1:

X-MEN(2) @ IND(1) OT

Not much to report thru 2. Then in the third there was a power outage (seriously – the game stopped and said the arena lights failed for a minute. Who thinks of stuff like that???) The teams traded goals, the game went to OT..and since Indy was involved, that meant a win for the other team. This time, it was an OT penalty shot goal that sealed the loss. Indy now has 12 OT/SO losses, by far the most in the league.

STARS: #3 Giordano (1G) #2 Allen (31 sv) #1 Voracek(1G 1A)

Weekly Summary:
Disappointing OT loss. Not looking good with all these road games coming, and defense playing time issues galore.

Minneapolis Deep Freeze
Weekly Preview:
Minneapolis gets one home game this week, in a week that they only play 2 games total.
Game #1: Lakeland Fly Tigers (5) @ Minneapolis Deep Freeze (6) – OT

Minneapolis comes out on top in a thriller. The Deep Freeze opened the game with 3 goals in the first 15 minutes, but the Flying Tigers clawed their way back with 3 goals in less than 2 minutes to force a 3-3 tie at the end of the first period. Coach Larry Murphy, looking for a change in momentum, swapped out started Henrik Lundqvist in exchange for Michal Neuvirth.

Minneapolis regained the lead early in the second period, only to surrender it later in the period when Lakeland scored 2 more goals in quick succession. Lakeland leads 5-4 at the end of the second period.

Minneapolis ties it at 5 early in the third period and then the goalies finally decide to take off their blindfolds, keeping the game tied and forcing us into overtime.

Three minutes into the extra period, Getzlaf gets loose on a breakway for Minneapolis and beats Quick to earn the Deep Freeze the win.
