Hampton Blizzard: Hampton hosts Lakeland and Columbus for its Week 4 home game matchups with Hampton’s so-far solid defence (well, goaltending really) facing a challenge in the two visiting team’s high-flying offenses.
Lakeland Flying Tigers @ Hampton Blizzard This turned out to be a very back-and-forth game free-wheeling game with lots of shots (Hampton would wind up outshooting Lakeland 41-36) and some very good goaltending on both ends of the ice.
TJ Oshie opened the scoring for Lakeland at 4:30 of the 1st period blasting a slapshot through a crowd and under the pads of Antti Raanta (no shutout this time, Antti). It was Oshie’s 3rd of the season with assists by Steen and Duchene.
Hampton evened things up 10 minutes later on a great tip-in by Patric Hornqvist (#4) on a shot from the point by Anders Lee. Mikael Backlund picked up the other assist.
Uber part-timer Oliver Bjorkstrand connected on his 2nd goal of the season rifling a wrist shot from the slot at 2:25 of the 2nd period over the shoulder of Marc-Andre Fleury to give Hampton a 2-1 lead.
Grabner tied it up for Lakeland at 15:38 of the 2nd period on another tip in past Raanta. For Grabner, it was his 4th of the season with Seabrook and Thornton drawing assists.
With two seconds left in the 2nd period in a mad scramble in front of the Lakeland net, Andrej Sekera raced in from the point to drill the shot under Fleury for a 3-2 Hampton lead ending a period in which the Blizzard fired 22 shots on the Lakeland netminder.
Glory be … we scored 3 goals!
The 3rd period was pretty much the reverse of the 2nd period with Lakeland taking it to Hampton all period and eventually outshooting them 15-9, but the Blizzard defence kept actual scoring chances to a minimum.
With just over two minutes left in the period and a mad flurry of activity in the Hampton end, the puck popped loose to Backlund who raced up ice (or rather, tried to) only to be grabbed from behind and hauled down by Seabroook.
Lakeland pulled its goalie with a little over a minute left even though short-handed and hit the post (wrist shot by Oshie) and had Duchene almost beat Raanta on a wraparound with 5 seconds left, but the period ended with the same score as it started with Hampton taking it 3-2.
Game Stars – ignoring the numbnuts star selection process by the software …
third star – Andrej Sekera with a goal, 5 shots, 1 hit, 2 blocked shots in 24:39 of ice timesecond star – Brent Seabrook with an assist, 4 shots, 1 hit, 3 blocked shots and 30:35 in ice time!!!first star – Antti Raanta with 34 saves
Columbus Brew Jackets @ Hampton Blizzard The Brew Jackets came in as feisty as a swarm of hornets and the two teams spent 60+ minutes trying to grind each other out of existence.
The game featured a lot of hitting, grinding out of players along the boards, bouncing pucks, outraged coaches and not a whistle to be found.
Despite the physical play by both teams (with Hampton generally playing much of the game with an aggression penalty) there was all of 12 minutes in penalties called and two of those went to Columbus’s Edmundson for delay of game when he fired the puck up over the glass in the 1st period.
For the 2nd consecutive game, the Hampton defencemen played a key role in generating offense. In this one, Oliver Ekman-Larsson swatted a bouncing pack between the pads of Peter Budaj at the 10-minute mark of the first period to give Hampton the first goal of the game. Sekera and Trocheck drew the assists for generally just creating chaos in the Columbus end. the goal was Ollie’s first of the season.
Mr. Andrew Ladd evened things up midway through the second rifling a rebound over Carey Price’s glove hand for his 4th of the year. Tyler johnson drew the assist by making the initial shot that Price couldn’t control.
The rest of the second period was a complete grindfest with the only offense generated early on in the period when Carlo and Point were sent off for coincidental roughing minors which created some actual space to skate. The rest of the period pretty much had someone in a skater’s face full-time.
Andrej Sekera (3) scored for the second straight game at 8:20 of the 3rd period when he fired a bullet past a sprawling Budaj. Bjorkstrand and Killorn got the helpers.
The two teams continued to play it tight but Hampton spent the last five minutes of the game almost completely penning Columbus in its own end and wound up outshooting them16-8 in the period.
In a rare breather, Columbus managed to send Budaj scuttling to the bench with just over a minute left when the puck popped over Erik Johnson’s stick at the Brew Jackets’ blueline and out to centre ice. Paul Stastny recovered the puck turning back with it only to have Carlo knock the puck loose and then the Brew Jackets flooded the Blizzard’s zone.
The Brew Jackets immediately went on the attack with Brent Burns firing the puck at the crowded front of the net … where somehow Sheary managed to knock the puck out of the air and send it bouncing past Carey Price into the Hampton net. Dang!
Talk about taking the wind out of a team’s sails.
The teams fought through overtime with Hampton outshooting Columbus 4-3 and then it was on to the dreaded shootout.
For the first round it was Columbus sniper Kucherov versus stuck-in-a-rut Filip Forsberg. Both scorers did what they are supposed to do and scored easily.
Then it was Brent Burns for Columbus versus Vincent Trocheck. Burns fired it through Price’s pads while Trocheck drifted a shot off Budaj’s pads.
Then it was Miller for Columbus and he made Price look like a complete bozo and deked past him for the game-winning shootout goal for Columbus.
Weekly Summary: Hampton manages to snag 3 of 4 points at home this week with the offense finally starting to show signs of life (albeit generated by its defencemen for the most part) and although the loss to Columbus was disappointing (as is the lack of offence from the top line) the emergence of guys like Oliver Bjorkstrand as an offensive force is a pleasant surprise and we were happy to hold much better scoring teams like Lakeland and Columbus to two goals apiece in regulation time.

Clearfield Bison Bobby Lu in goal for two home tilts; one against an ‘old friend’ and one against the commish. Can they stay hot?
Toledo Walleye @ Clearfield Bison It’s odd to play Toledo, because a lot of their guys were ‘our guys’ when we took over for Indiana last year. I’m sure the feeling was mutual, because both teams came out and sort of danced around the first period – no PPs, not many chances, 12 shots apiece scoreless.

After that…Clearfield took control. Shots were 14-8 Clearfield in the second, 16-5 in the third, and Clearfield cruised to a 3-0 win.

Bobby Lu was not really tested much, but he gets #1 star anyway. #2 goes to Dubnyk who was under fire constantly; #3 to Hjalmarsson for getting the opening goal.

Chicago Cosa Nostra @ Clearfield Bison The struggling gangsters come to town – and are blitzed immediately by the home side. Clearfield’s Bryan Little scores twice as the Bison outshoot Chicago 21-8 in the opening frame.

Second period was a whole lot o’ nothin, and Clearfield seemed to be cruising to another shutout until another ex-Sycamore, Toews, scored with 3:40 left. That seemed to get Clearfield’s attention, and Chicago didn;t really mount another good scoring chance after that.Bison win 2-1.

Shots were 45-24, attempts 79-41, 68% faceoffs to Clearfield..they controlled play throughout.

#1 star to Little, #2 to Luongo, #3 to Condon – another goalie who held up well ‘under seige’.

Weekly Summary: Clearfield goes 2-0 and continues to display strong defense. I still feel we’re a little short on offense, but so far the old ‘Devils’ model seems to be working.

Gilbert Sharks
Wausau Lumberjacks @ Gilbert Sharks Artemi Panarin puts Gilbert on the board with his 4th goal less than 5 minutes into the 1st period. Wausau comes back just 27 seconds later when Artturi Lehkonen ties it up at 1Ondrej Palat puts Wausau in the lead later in the period with his first goal of the season. The goalies settle in and it remains a 2-1 Wasau lead late into the 3rd period. With 6 minutes left Jakub Voracek slips a puck by Mike Smith to tie the game 2-2. Plenty of action at the end of the game but no one can put it in the net and we go to overtime. Gilbert gets 3 shots on goal in OT and Wausau only gets 1 but there is no scoring and we go to the shootout! Mike Hoffman start things off for Wausau, dekes left and scores. Cam Atkinson goes to work for Gilbert….and slips it through the 5 hole on Smith. Claude Giroux will be next up for Wausau, he dekes and shoots….saved by Tuuka Rask. 2nd up for Gilbert is Artemi Panarin, who scored earlier in the game, he skates in on Smith shoots and misses the net wide left. It remains 1-1 in the shootout with 1 shooter left for each team. Jason Zucker will take the puck for Wausau, he skates in, fakes, shoots and…..SCORES!! Wausau with a 2-1 advantage. Jakub Voracek, who put in the game tying goal in the 3rd period will take the ice for Gilbert, their final hope. Voracek takes the puck, skates wide, coming in fast…..he shoots….Smith with a kick save!!! Wausau wins 3-2!!
Weekly Summary: Gilbert loses their only home game in OT.

Weekly Summary: Brentwood continues their winning ways, winning both home games this week.

Alamo Defenders Toledo and New Jersey come to Alamo. Toledo is 2nd in the Central, and New Jersey is in 5th in the Atlantic.
Toledo Walleye @ Alamo Defenders Toledo wins this game in overtime. Brad Marchand appears to have scored on a wraparound in overtime, but the replay shows otherwise as supposedly the Defenders were in the crease. Vanek scores the game winner for the Walleye. Alamo gets 40 shots to Toledo’s 39.

Toledo 3 Alamo 2

1st – Vanek 2 goals – including game winner.
2nd -Krejci 1 goal and 1 assist.
3rd – Dell with 38 saves.

Tough game for Alamo, but they do earn a point.

New Jersey Grizzlies @ Alamo Defenders New Jersey starts the scoring with a Byfuglien goal 6:14 in the game. Alamo outshoots New Jersey, 20-6 in the first period. Perrault scores a goal in the first period. After 1 period, its 1-1. Its 2-2, after 2 periods. But, Alamo makes it count in the 3rd period, as they net two. Ekblad scores his 9th goal and Gardiners scores his 1st of the year.

Alamo 4 New Jersey 2

1st – Gardiner 1 goal, 1 assist
2nd -Seguin 1 goal, 1 assist
3rd – Ekblad 1 goal, 1 assist

Weekly Summary: Alamo collects a point in tough overtime loss to Toledo. Then, it comes on strong in the 3rd period to defeat New Jersey. Alamo gets 3 of 4 points.

Long Beach Ice Dogs
Minneapolis Deep Freeze @ Long Beach Ice Dogs Long Beach took a 2-1 lead into the 3rd period when Marchessault tied the game with 13 minutes left. Roussel gave Long Beach the lead 5 minutes later but that only lasted 2 minutes until Turris tied it again. It only took 30 seconds for Bozak to score the winning goal in the Dirt Bags 4-3 win. Long Beach dominated the game outshooting Minneapolis 42-22. Bobrovsky kept the game close making 38 saves.

1st: Roussel
2nd: Bozak
3rd: Brown

Clearfield Bison @ Long Beach Ice Dogs Long Beach took an early lead on a Roussel goal. It stayed that way until the 3rd period when Bergeron tipped in a Hjalmarsson shot. It was back and forth for the next 10 minutes until Subban rocketed a slap shot past Markstrom with 4 minutes left. The Dirt Bags threw everything at Anderson but couldn’t get the tying goal as Clearfield won 2-1. The turning point in the game was when Subban got a 4:00 high sticking penalty midway through the 2nd period. Long Beach peppered Anderson but Clearfield was able to kill the penalty and take the momentum back.

1st: Anderson
2nd: Bergeron
3rd: Roussel

Weekly Summary: Long Beach splits 2 1 goal games.

LA Great Danes The Blizzard, Deep Freeze, and Nor’Westers bring winter early to the south on a 3-game homestand for LA. The Danes are coming off a good week 3 last week, winning 3 of 4, including 2 of 3 on the road.
Hampton Blizzard @ LA Great Danes Best game of the year for the Great Danes with a 4-0 win over Carey Price and the Blizzard. The Danes put 48 shots on Price and score in each period plus a last-minute goal to cap it off. Scoring chances were 8-2 for the game – yes, 2 scoring chances for the Blizzard the entire game. Frederick Andersen gets the #1 star with his second straight shutout with 28 saves, 13 in the final period. Mark Scheifele was the #1 star in my book with a 4-point night, 2G-2A and a +3, and Alex Pietrangelo the #3 star with 1G-1A on 6 SOG and a +2.
Minneapolis Deep Freeze @ LA Great Danes The Danes hang in there with a scoreless tie after 2 periods versus the Central Division leaders. Little happened in period 1. In period 2, a Deep Freeze goal by Hartnell was disallowed, and Frederick Andersen stayed hot with a big save off a 3 on 1 shot from Spezza later in the period. The Great Danes got their legs in period 3 with 3 goals in a 6-minute span by Pietrangelo, Jokinen, and Schenn. Andersen lost his bid for a third straight shutout when Marchessault beat him at 17:10, but Mikkel Boedker sealed the 4-1 victory with an EN goal at 18:37. Brayden Schenn took the #1 star with 1G-1A, Andersen the #2 star with 28 saves, and Alex Pietrangelo again was the #3 star with the game’s first goal.
Thunder Bay Nor’Westers @ LA Great Danes Another scoreless first period versus Thunder Bay, but Kesler broke the ice in the first minute of the second period with his second goal of the season. Landeskog tied it quickly on a deflection at 3:44, and then Thunder Bay had a one-minute two-man advantage that the Danes killed. Phillip Danault then put the Danes back on top 2-1 with his second goal of the season at 10:28, but Charlie Coyle brought Thunder Bay even again at 14:22 with his 6th goal of the year against the Danes 4th line. But the 4th line drew a Thunder Bay penalty 2 minutes later, and Nikolaj Ehlers converted a PPG for another LA lead at 3-2, heading into period 3. The Danes got into penalty trouble again, and with top D Suter and Pietrangelo both in box, the Nor-Westers couldn’t convert the 4 on 3, but Ryan O’Reilly got the PPG right at the end of the 5 on 4 at 5:02 of the 3rd period. Each team looked like they were happy to get a point, as regulation time ended with a 3-3 tie and only 1 scoring chance for each team in the 3rd period. The Great Danes got the only 3 shots of overtime, and Alex Pietrangelo scored the game winner at 1:59 of OT. Ehlers earned the #1 star with 1G-1A in only 9:39 of ice time. Ryan Kesler was the #2 star with a dominating performance – 1G-1A, 70% FO wins, 7 hits, and 3 takeways in 25:58 of ice-time. Pietrangelo earned the #3 star with his OT winner – his third straight game with a goal.
Weekly Summary: 3 Straight home wins for the Great Danes. And they did it resting Tyler Toffoli for the week, one of our top 6 F’s. Mark Scheifele was quiet the last 2 home games after his 4-point night, but the Danes got some scoring from their depth lines and top-notch goaltending by Frederick Andersen with 4 goals against in the 3 games. But Alex Pietrangelo is my vote for player of the week and early Norris trophy candidate. With key goals in all 3 home games and the OT winner in the last one, Pietrangelo now has 5G-5A in the first 15 games and is +8 for the year, anchoring a defense that limited its opponents from the north to 19 total scoring chances over the 3 games.

Lakeland Flying Tigers Lakeland had 3 home games this block, so my thinking was hoping it was something I could take advantage of it.
New Jersey Grizzlies @ Lakeland Flying Tigers Lakeland 2, New Jersey 1.

I was very jealous of the Grizzlies ability to roll out stud defense pairs on all 3 groups. It had me worried when the game started. And I was right. New Jersey D men blocked a bunch of shots, but eventually, the scoring chances racked up for Lakeland to 18 chances and are only able to find the net twice. Fleury stood on his head again and kept it close for the win.

Gilbert Sharks @ Lakeland Flying Tigers Gilbert 4, Lakeland 2.

I was worried about the Gilbert offense as a few players on the team had gotten off to slow starts. I figured it was only a matter of time, and again, I was right. Gilbert scored the first three goals of the game and never trailed in this game. Fleury was good, but Gilbert’s Offense was much better.

Toledo Walleye @ Lakeland Flying Tigers Lakeland 1, Toledo 0. OT

Toledo gets a point and neither team can find the net until overtime when Oshie tips in a shot from Ristolianen. Fleury gets the shutout in extra time, facing 31 shots.

Weekly Summary: Lakeland gets 4 out of a possible 6 points. Not too bad, I’m happy with that.

Corktown Suds Two home games for the Suds
Columbus Brew Jackets @ Corktown Suds A couple 6 win teams collide for best beer nickname as Columbus take the 3 hour trip up to Detroit. It was a defensive struggle for most of this game as the first goal came at the near midway point of the game. Brew Jacket Brent Burns (3) scored what would be the only goal for Columbus. It took about 20 more minutes of Hockey before Corktown tied the game at 1. Both teams would earn a point as this one took extra time. But two minutes into overtime jordan Schroeder nets his 7th goal of the season giving the Suds the victory. An impressive 36 saves for Budaj.

Corktown 2-1 OT

Brentwood Bandits @ Corktown Suds A very good Brentwood team visits Corktown for the first time this season to take on a Suds team that can get hot at any moment but is very inconsistent. This one was another game where the defensive shined on both sides. Corktown fired from all cylinders but Bandit goalie Gibson (7-2) had 39 saves. Unfortunately for Brentwood, Richard Panik put one passed him in the 3rd period and that was the lone goal from the entire game. The Bandits had a few scoring chances late but Griess (5-3) earned a big shutout against a really good team in the East.

Corktown 1-0

Weekly Summary: Corktown protects their home ice going 2-0 and earning the maximum 4 points. More impressive was the defense only giving up 1 goal. Unusual, for the Suds as they usually play in high scoring games.

Bathgate Rangers Rangers have 3 home games this week, hope for lots of points. Hosting Long Beach, Lousiana and Bucks County.
Long Beach Ice Dogs @ Bathgate Rangers Defense would have been nice. Might have won, or at least gotten to overtime. Rangers squander a 3-1 lead, a 4-3 lead and then after tying it at 5-5, they give up two (including an empty netter at 19:41 of the 3rd). Of course you could make this out as a bad day for Bathgate, but you have to give the Long Beach offense lots of credit. They never gave up. Roussel scored the 1st goal for LB then he scored the game winner with 4:05 to play in the 3rd and assisted on the EN goal. And that earned him 1st star of the game. Bathgate dominated the face-offs, but LB lead in shots, shots on goal and scoring chances and the better net-minding.
2nd Star – Lindholm 2 Gs
3rd Star – Marner 1 G, 2 Assists both from Long Beach.
Goalies – not much to talk about.
LA Great Danes @ Bathgate Rangers If the Rangers could finish out games, they might do better – same problem as last year. This time they give up a 2-1 lead, then a 3-2 lead as Long Beach ties it midway through the 3rd on Scheifele goal (he’s lighting it up a lot in the early going). Then Scheen nets a PP goal just a couple of minutes later. Bathgate couldn’t answer.
Stars (all LB):
1. Ehlers 1 goal
2. Scheifele 1 goal
3. Pietrangelo 1 goal
GWG – Schenn Notable: Kesler wins 15 faceoffs (out of 20) for LB
Bucks County Racoons @ Bathgate Rangers This one goes to overtime, then to a shutout, then Kane scores for Bathgate. Then Johansson scores for Bucks County. Then Kane scores again for the winner – but it’s the Bucks County’s Evander Kane netting the winner as they Racoons win 6-5 (SO).
So, the Rangers think they may have a new formula – come from behind. Down 2-0, then 3-1 in the 1st. Then 3-2 and 4-2 in the 2nd. Rangers tie it 4-4 with 2.05 to go. Then the final minute erupts and the Racoons score the go ahead goal when Johansson gets his 2nd goal of the game with 31 seconds remaining. But the Rangers find a way to score 14 seconds later when Anderson knocks in the rebound off Kane shot setup by Karlsson. 5-5 as the buzzer sounds. Nothing in OT. Then the shoot-out and Bucks County ends the game with the win.
Stars:
1. BCR – Johansson 2 goals
2. BGR – P.Kane 4 assists
3. BGR – Dillon 1 goal, 1 assist
GWG – Evander Kane in the shoot-out.
Weekly Summary: So Rangers manager 1 of a possible 6 points in a dismal, no defense, home stand.
Long Beach 7 Bathgate 5
LA Great Danes 4 Bathgate 3
Bucks County 6 Bathgate 5 (SO)

Bucks County Racoons Bucks County hosts Atlantic division powers Hampton and Corktown in their effort to climb above .500 for the season
Corktown Suds @ Bucks County Racoons For the third time at home this year, the Raccoons gave up a 3rd period lead and fell in OT, this time to Corktown by a score of 4-3. After taking a 2 goal 1st period lead the Racs saw the Suds score 4 of the next 5 goals, with Corktown getting the game tying goal at 11:02 of the 3rd on a shot be Tarasenko. 2:40 into overtime Wayne Simmonds scored his 2nd of the game to give the Suds the win. The three stars of the game were Simmonds and Tarasenko of Corktown #1 and #2, with Dominic Moore getting the 3rd star for the Raccoons.
Hampton Blizzard @ Bucks County Racoons The Bucks County Raccoons hoped to reverse their trend of giving up a 3rd period lead with the Hampton Blizzard coming to town, and they did just that, folding under the weight of a 4 goal Blizzard 1st period and losing to the visitors from Hampton by a score of 6-3. The Raccoons were able to climb back into the game when a goal by Hyman cut the lead to 4-3 in the 3rd, but Bjorkstrand scored with just over 6 minutes to go for the Blizzard and they later added an empty net goal for the final tally. Forsberg, Trocheck and Burakovsky were selected as the three stars of the game, each tallying a goal and an assist.
Weekly Summary: Hoping to show they could demonstrate they might be a playoff team, Bucks County failed miserably in their two home games, giving up a 3rd period lead and only securing 1 point at home for the week. The Racs did score 6 goals, however, which might be considered a silver lining in the dark clouds of the home stand.

Jagr Mullets 4 home games – is this just what the doctor ordered for the struggling Mullets?
Wausau Lumberjacks @ Jagr Mullets A great start for Jagr, scoring 5 goals but giving up a late goal at 18:55 in the 3rd to blow the shutout.

Weekly Summary: Two wins. Trying to get back in the race.

Thunder Bay Nor’Westers Struggling around .500 the Nor’Westers are playing ok but not taking charge and moving up the standings. Ben Bishop has been inconsistent in goal and the power play has also been hit and miss.
Alamo Defenders @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers A total blowout. Alamo never started and was never in the game. Thunder Bay jumped out to a 2-0 in the first period on goals by Tatar(5) and Landeskog(1). Muzzin extended the lead to 3-0 before Alamo showed some life closing to 3-2. The 3rd period saw Thunder Bay storm the walls and bury 5 unanswered goals. Barkov(6), Couturier(2&3), Saad(5), and O’Reilly(4) for an 8-2 tally as Taps were played.
Columbus Brew Jackets @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers A hard fought and contested battle. The games was tied four separate time at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 before Holden sunk the Nor’Westers with just 17 seconds left in regulation and a 5-4 road victory. Columbus was lead by Connor Sheary who scored a Hat Trick with 1 goal in the 1st and two in the 3rd. Thunder Bay had goals by Vesey(1), O’Reilly(5), Tatar(6&7).
Weekly Summary: It came very close to being a very good 2 game homestand, but Columbus solved Ben Bishop. Goalie inconsistency Good one night weak the next has plague Thunder Bay in the early season.

Minneapolis Deep Freeze Minneapolis has already lost all 3 of their road games already this week, so they desperately need a win at home.

Bobrovsky is a brick wall stopping 49 of 50 shots to take the well-deserved first star.

Columbus Brew Jackets Columbus hosts Brentwood this week
Brentwood Bandits @ Columbus Brew Jackets Columbus fans getting plenty of free hockey in this game as it goes to a shootout. Budaj holds strong blocking both Crosby and Niederietter, only allowing Marlequ from Brentwood to get one by. Meanwhile both, Kucherov and Burns score on their opportunities. CBJ win it in the shootout.
