MWHL VALUES

The Mid-West Hockey League is about a fourth of the way in to the 2017-2018 season, and with a recent flurry of trades, the overall valuation of the franchises (based on NHL salaries as reported in the game) shakes out as shown in the list below. What will be interesting to see, if how all that value (or lack thereof) translates into standings positions when it’s all said and done. Bathgate has dropped to the bottom – but they were already struggling for wins. Thunder Bay may be the biggest disappointment, but Nor’Easter management is seeking to light a fire. Atlantic division teams are going after it, with Clearfield and Hampton lighting up the trade register, but Corktown is the team that is silently lurking – and doing it with a light payroll! Jagr looks like the they will vie with Thunder Bay in the sad column unless they turn things around. They are too good to be looking up at the Rangers – and maybe another team. Columbus is begining to make the most of their payroll – and if their defense ever kicks in, they will be tough to stop.

Then there’s Brentwood – near the bottom of the payroll rankings, but current tied for the tops in total points in the league. They have the stingiest defense. We’ll re look at this as the season reaches the halfway points and beyond.
