| Hampton Blizzard | Hampton has a split of games this week with two on the road and two at home versus tough Gilbert Sharks and the anything but floundering Toledo Walleyes. |
| Gilbert Sharks @ Hampton Blizzard | Gilbert came out like a house afire and with the help of four power plays in the first period outshot the Blizzard by the insane margin of 22-5. Thanks to Antti Raanta’s allergy to giving up goals though the Sharks were kept off the board. It wasn’t until the second period while Jarome Iginla was off on a double-minor for trying to use his stick to clear Vincent Trocheck’s sinuses that the game finally had its’ first goal thanks to a great slapshot by suddenly uber-valuable Colton Sissons that beat Tukka Rask low to give Hampton a 1-0 lead. The Blizzard extended the lead to 2-0 27 seconds into the third period when Filp Forsberg raced down the left wing a zipped a wrist shot between Rask’s pads. From then on though the period was all Gilbert. The Sharks outshot the Blizzard again by a massive margin of 21-6 with Roman Josi posting a power play goal at the 10-minute mark on a slapshot through a crowd in front of Raanta which made it 2-1. That was all that the Sharks would get though as Raanta was a man possessed in the Blizzard nets saving the win for Hampton despite being outshot by their biggest margin of the year, 48-23. It was not for lack of chances either as the Sharks went 1/9 on the power play. Scoring Summary FIRST PERIOD: none SECOND PERIOD: 1. | Toledo Walleye @ Hampton Blizzard | Evgeni Malkin’s return to the lineup couldn’t have been scripted any better. Facing the mighty Toledo Walleyes who shared the same record as Hampton, Malkin scored twice and assisted on another as the Blizzard dominated in a 5-1 victory. The Blizzard special teams clicked in this game holding the Walleyes 0/3 while going 2/5 themselves. Shots were even at 38 apiece but Hampton won the war at the faceoff circle 40-26 and the battle of bashing 24-21. For the second consecutive game and making a potential bid to get playing time in the post-season, Antti Raanta was spectacular in nets saving 37 of 38 shots. | Weekly Summary: | Antti Raanta steers the Blizzard to two wins in at home for a perfect week (albeit with less than perfect play) as Hampton ruled the seas in wins over the Walleyes and Sharks. |
| LA Great Danes | The Great Danes have dropped into second place in the Pacific as they have hit a stretch of playing .500 hockey. But it’s been a tremendous inaugural season so far for the Danes as they reached the 100-point mark through 75 games. |
| Bathgate Rangers @ LA Great Danes | This is the home side of back -to-back games this week against the Rangers. Micheal Ferland opens the scoring and gives the Rangers the lead after 1. A Jamie Benn PPG ties it up early in period 2, but Eric Staal beats Fredrick Andersen on a wraparound to put Bathgate back up by one going into the final period. Nick Bonino gets LA even 5 minutes into the 3rd, and the game remains tight and appears to be heading to OT. But, Ivan Provorov scores with 38 seconds left to send the home fans away disappointed by another loss. the Rangers earn a 3-2 road win with Eric Staal the #1 star with 1G-1A. |
| Brentwood Bandits @ LA Great Danes | Coming off the loss to Bathgate, the Danes face the due of Crosby/Tavares and first place Brentwood. The start couldn’t be much worse as Crosby scores twice on the Bandits’ first 2 shots of the game – 2-0 Bandits just 2:20 into the game. Not looking good for the Danes, but a momentum shift occurs when Nikolaj Ehlers gets LA on the board just 1:10 later. The Danes control the rest of the period, outshooting Brentwood 21-7 in the first, and Pietrangelo and Eller add goals to give the Danes a 3-2 lead after 1. Power plays were the story of period 2 – Brentwood ties it up on a PPG by Antoine Vermette, followed by PPG’s for the Danes by Scheifele and Kesler. Kesler’s goal puts LA up 5-3 late in the 2nd, and Brentwood pulls G Halak in favor of John Gibson. When Kevan Miller scores a 4 on 4 goal followed by Jake Guentzel’s bad-angle goal, the Great Danes decide this is not Frederick Andersen’s night in goal, and backup Steve Mason comes in relief with the game tied 5-5 after Guentzel’s goal 5:45 into the 3rd. Andersen was not sharp in this one, but pulling the league’s top goalie was meant to be a wake-up call for the rest of the Danes. And when Jamie Benn scored off the rush followed by a 4th line goal by Alex Chiasson, the Danes were back on top by 2 at 7-5 with 7 minutes left. Dougie Hamilton sealed an 8-5 with for the Great Danes with an empty net goal. Steve Mason got the win in relief with 5 saves in the final 14 minutes, and it was a big night for Mark Scheifele with 1G-3A. |
| Weekly Summary: | Another up and down week for the Great Danes. A last-minute goal by Bathgate cost the Danes from at least earning a point in home game #1, but the Danes overcame a quick 0-2 deficit and a rough outing by Andersen to rebound with a big win over first place Brentwood 8-5. Home ice in the playoffs would be nice, but the Danes will need some help in the final 2 weeks as Alamo continues to roll. |

| Lakeland Flying Tigers @ Long Beach Ice Dogs | Talbot saved all 28 shots he faced as Long Beach won 1-0. Jones matched him save for save until Carter scored with 1:08 left for the only goal of the game.

| Jagr Mullets @ Long Beach Ice Dogs | This was a back and forth game with Jagr taking 3 different 1 goal leads. Each time they scored, Long Beach tied the game. When Schultz scored with 4:33 left it looked like the Mullets would win. However, for the second game in a row Carter scored a late goal. This time with 1:05 to go tying the game at 3-3 sending it to OT. No one scored in overtime so we headed to a shootout. Laine scored on the first shootout attempt but Skinner and Carter scored for the Ice Dogs giving them a 4-3 win.

| Bathgate Rangers | Rangers have two games this week – against Pacific Division team, the TOUGH LA Great Danes (who claim to be so-so as of late) and the California Regulators. Ranger are working hard to get to and over .500 for the year, so it’s an all out push. |
| LA Great Danes @ Bathgate Rangers | Great Danes put for a big effort in the 1st outshooting the home team by 15-9 but the teams come out tied 1-1. Scheen (26) and Hornqvist (get the tallies). Both goals came within the 1st 2 mintues!! Then Kesler (19) breaks the tie at the 1:58 mark of period 2. Eriksson (12) ties it up 7 minutes later and that really got the Rangers going. After outshooting (17-9) and outplaying the Great Danes in period 2, they took the lead 3-2 when Ferland splits the pipes halfway through period 3. Then Subban gets the icing on the cake with an EN goal (12) at 18:49. Nilsson was able to stop everything else the rest of the way. STARS (BGR) 1. Hornqvist 1 goal, 1 assist 2. Nilsson 33 saves 3. Ferland 1 goal (closely contested over Karlsson’s 2 assists. Rangers amass 36 minutes of penalties, Zadorov 15, Wood 19 both with GAME misconducts – but inspite of all that time, LA only gets 2 PPs and fails on both. Their were 3 sets of coincidental penalties in the game! |
| California Regulators @ Bathgate Rangers | California is not the same group they were last year and the Rangers are hoping to take advantage of that. And after trading goals in the 1st: Killorn (17) for Bathgate and Schmaltz (6) for Californina, the Rangers blow the game open getting the next 4 goals. 2 in the 2nd (Buchnevich (8) and Subban (13)) and 2 in the 3rd, Tierney (9) and Hornqvist (17). California then scores late, Shattenkirk (15) to make the final 5-2 Bathgate. The Rangers first 2 goals and both Regulator goals were PP goals. STARS: 1. BGR – Subban 1 goal, 1 assist 2. CAL – Shattenkirk 1 goal, 1 assist 3. BRG – Tierney 1 goal |
| Weekly Summary: | Rangers pull off a 2 for 2 winning week! Staal continues to have great success with face-offs, 21 in game 1 and 15 in game 2 – better than 61%. |
| Columbus Brew Jackets | Brew Jackets have a great chance to creep up on Brentwood as they host 4 games this week – against NJ (no slouch), Alamo, even better, LA – on par with Alamo, and finally Long Beach – another strong team. 2 of these teams are higher on the totem pole than Columbus – good chances, but nothing easy. |
| New Jersey Grizzlies @ Columbus Brew Jackets | Perhaps this might look like the easiest of the games and maybe a bell weather on how the week will go, and Columbus let’s this one literally slip away. Beer boys come out strong firing 18 on net in the first and gaining a 3-1 lead. But then they lose the edge as things shift to the Grizzlies and they score 2 in the 2nd to tie it (in the opening 2 minutes) and then in a 3rd period totally dominated by New Jersey, the Grizzlies finally get one of their 16 shots go get past Budaj and Sedin gets #13. Brew Jackets played the final minute with an empty net but the Grizzly defense was so swarming, the total shot output for Columbus in the 3rd was 3 shots! STARS all belonged to NJ: 1. Kunitz 1 goal, 1 assist 2. Byfuglien 1 goal, 1 assist 3. Johansen 1 goal |
| Alamo Defenders @ Columbus Brew Jackets | Game 2 was like Deja Vu put in reverse, sort of. Alamo (Marchand-41) gets the only first period goal. Jackets then respond with 2 in the 2nd – Sheary (34) and Burns (30), but Alamo responds with 2 of their own – Seguin (21)-PP and Marchand (42) his 2nd of the game and it’s 3-2 Alamo after 2. But then Sheary (35) gets his 2nd of the game (PP) two minutes in in the 3rd to tie it and Upshall gets the game winner at the 8:38 mark. Final minute and a half, The Defenders bring in the extra attacker, but Budaj and the defense fight off all shots for the 4-3 win. STARS: 1. CBJ – Sheary 2 goals, 1 assist 2. CBJ – Burns 1 goal, 2 assists 3. ALA – Sequin 1 goal, 2 assists NOTABLE – Marchand 2 goals and 12 PIM; Kucherov 3 assists |
| LA Great Danes @ Columbus Brew Jackets | All these games are now getting tense, playoff implications and possible matchups at every turn. Chiasson (7) gets the Great Danes out front a minute and a half in – but Columbus then dominates the rest of the period and gets goals from Burns (31) and Sheary (36) to lead 2-1 after 1. Then Hayes (8) gets an unassisted goal to start the 2nd, but then the Jackets goof up and LA takes advantage. Danault (11) cuts it to 3-2 2 mintues after the Hayes goal. Then with 2 and 1/2 minutes to go in the 2nd, Upshall draws a tripping penalty – Troffoli (18) makes them pay with a power play goal at 18:10. Then Staal gets nabbed for hooking at 19:06 and Schenn (27) scores 13 seconds later to give LA the 4-3 lead as period 2 draws to a close. Then the Jackets muzzle the Great Danes in the 3rd and after Carlo goes off for hooking early, the Jackets muscle up and Couture (25) scores a SH goal to tie it. That’s it for the scoring in the third AND the OT. Both teams get a point, who will get 2? OT – and Johnson can’t stop either of the 2 shots, one from Benn and one from Scheifele. Anderson stuffs Kucherov and Couture and LA wins the shoot-out and the game. 5-4 (SO) STARS (must be home team bias – all CBJ) 1. Sheary 1 goal, 2 points 2. Couture (1 goal, 2 points) 3. | Long Beach Ice Dogs @ Columbus Brew Jackets | Columbus scores 3 goals in the 1st 3:49 of the 2nd period to reverse a 1-0 deficit and get 4 goals total in the 2nd, more than Long Beach gets in the game and handily wins 6-3. It was another game where the opposition dominated in SOG (33-26) and FOW (59.4%) but the Jackets lead in scoring chances 19-12 and PP goals 2/6 to 0/2. STARS: all CBJ 1. Calvert 1 goal, 1 assist 2. Miller 1 goal, 1 assist 3. Carlo 1 goal, 1 assist Matheson blocks 5 shots for the Ice Dogs. |
| Weekly Summary: | After dropping the 1st game to NJ, Columbus was digging themselves a tough hole in their attempt to overtake Brentwood. But they game back and got 5 of 6 points in the final 3 to retain a chance (and put a big claim on at least 2nd place). |

| Brentwood Bandits @ Alamo Defenders | Brentwood dominates the first period and builds a 3-1 lead. But, Alamo dominates the second period and outshoots the Bandits, 20-5. But, in the 3rd, the Bandits go back and forth and get the game winner by Krug with 11 minutes to go.
Big difference in this game – 3 penalties on Alamo. 2 of them were 4 minute penalties, which the Bandits cashed in on once. But, the second 4 minute penalty was late in the game and effectively took the Defenders out of it. Brentwood 6 Alamo 5 1st star -Niederreiter |

| Toledo Walleye | Toledo (44-25-6) has 3 big home games this week, first against division rival Minneapolis (42-28-5) and then against 2 Atlantic Division teams Corktown (35-30-10) and New Jersey (37-34-4). |
| Minneapolis Deep Freeze @ Toledo Walleye | Toledo 2, Minneapolis 1 OT – Both teams come out tight in the first period, combining for only 12 SOG. Toledo kills 2 penalties and Minneapolis kills 1. 2 happy goalies to the break with no blemishes. In the 2nd period thing loosen up a bit, more pucks for the netminders to battle. Dubnyk remains perfect, but Crawford lets one by from Rieder, and the period ends 1-0 Toledo. The 3rd period sees the defenses tighten up again, with only 8 shots on goal combined. Minneapolis gets only 2 SOG, but Marchessault sneaks sneaks one by Dubnyk while Crawford is perfect stopping 6 and the game goes to overtime tied 1-1. Overtime is really active with 8 SOG in 3 minutes, Minneapolis shelling Crawford with 6 SOG, one sneaks in from Van Riemsdyk, sending the home fans away delirious. 1st star – Rieder 1g 2nd star – VanRiemsdyk 1g 3rd star – Marchessault 1g |

Lehtonen is almost perfect for Corktown, saving 29 of 30, with Backstrom getting the lone score. | Weekly Summary: | Great homestand for Toledo, 6 points and a defeat over rival Minneapolis. Holding the visitors to a combined 3 goals in 3 games shows the defense is coming around.

| Brentwood Bandits @ Gilbert Sharks | This one starts off with a bang seeing 7 goals in the first period. After the dust settled Gilbert had a 4-3 lead. Brentwood scored twice in the 2nd period to take a 5-4 lead but Gilbert gets one just before the 2nd period ended to tie it up at 5. Each team scored late in the 3rd period and the game went to a shootout 6-6. Atkinson and Panarin both score in the shootout while Cam Ward shuts out Brentwood to give Gilbert the 7-6 win. |

| Chicago Cosa Nostra @ Clearfield Bison | Very typical Clearfield game – dominate shots/faceoffs, grab a lead, make it stick. CHI got on the board early, but the Bison scored the next 3 and that was pretty much that. Some guy from CHI named Copp scored twice and got #1 star. |
| Minneapolis Deep Freeze @ Clearfield Bison | With the Deep Freeze in a hot division race, the Bison played their best lineup (and will do so for Toledo next week as well)…but this was a decidedly UN-Bisonlike performance. No goals for the first 26 minutes…then 11(!!) total in the last 35, punctuated by the game-winner by Aho in OT. Aho generated so many chances, I though maybe it was Crosby in disguise or something…he finished 2G 1A and#1 star.
Clearfield absolutely dominated play in the first..they had the first 15 shots and 18 of the first 21 – but when that ended scoreless, I knew that was a bad sign. Bison PP was an issue again as well, but the biggest issue was Anderson – 6GA on 10 scoring chances, 28 shots…that just won’t cut it. Big win for Minny in their playoff push though! |
| Bucks County Racoons @ Clearfield Bison | BCR is playong out the string, but they came ready to play vs. Clearfield – they scored twice in the first 5 minutes and it looked like a bad day for the Bison. BUT, Clearfield fought back for a change and scored the next three – two on the PP (I about fell out of my chair). Once again Anderson was leaky late, allowing the tying marker late in the third…and then giving up another game-winner in OT. Another visitor gets 2 goals, this time Palmeiri.The Bison dominate the stat sheet – but not where it counts the most. |
| Weekly Summary: | 4 out of 6 points sounds good, but 2 OT losses with the ‘main man’ in net is a bit troubling. Management continues to worry about Anderson…goalie controversy in the playoffs?? Hmm… |
