Bathgate Rangers
Weekly Preview: Bathgate with their new and younger team host Atlantic division leader New Jersey and 2nd place team Cincinnati …. a tough week ahead.
New Jersey Grizzlies @ Bathgate Rangers Not sure what got into the Rangers in this game, but newcomer Mika Zibanejad shined, as did new guys Jankowski and Halak. But it all stared with Karlsson scored a SH goal 7 minutes into the game. Gibbons then ties it up just over a minute later. Rangers take another penalty a few minutes later and Zibanejad tallies the SH goal!! 2 SH goals in the game (so far). Jankowski completes the 2nd period scoring and it’s 3-1 Rangers to this point.

Johansen cuts it to 3-2 with an unassisted goal 9 minutes it – but they Rangers played like some other team the rest of the way, scoring 3 more times (Ferland, Zibanejad, and Killorn – all EV strength goals). FINAL a surprising 6-2 win for Bathgate.

Subban and Andrighetto got into a fight early in the 1st with Andrighetto going out for 5 minutes, but PK drew a 5, a 2 and a 10 minute penalty for the altercation. Things started when Andrighetto drilled Zadorov. Subban taking offense takes a poke at Andrighetto – they go after it – it was called a draw, but it wasn’t!! PK clearly took care of business and got 2 for instigating, 5 for fighting and the 10 minute MC. But it certainly got the team up for the rest of the game!
STARS (all BGR)
1. Zibanejad 2 goals, 1 assist
2. Karlssson 1 goal 1 assist
3. Ferland 1 goal, 1 assist
Halak made 37 saves as the Grizzlies fired 39 shots that got to him.

Cincinnati Inferno @ Bathgate Rangers Rangers continue to do things they don’t normally do – win the 3rd period. And they had a 2-1 lead when it started – so guess what, 2 home wins in a row!
Buchnevich gets a PP goal at 12:36 to make it 1-0 for the 1st period.
William Karlsson gets a real early goal in the 2nd for the Inferno to tie it up. Then Zibanejad breaks the tie at 11:40 of the game with the Rangers only EV strength goal of the game. Then into the 3rd, Killorn gets the Rangers 2nd PP goal at 11:50 to give the Rangers some breathing room. Cincy pulls the goalie and Zibanejad knocks in the killer EN goal with 40 seconds left, 4-1 RANGERS!
Rangers cut back on their penalties in this game 3 for 6 minutes but the Infernor were whistles 8 times (16 min) and the Rangers score on 25% of those advantages.
Stars: (all BGR)
1. Zibanejad 2 goals (2 straight 2 goal home games for Mika)
2. Killorn 1 goal
3. Buchnevich 1 goal
Weekly Summary: Rangers get 4 of 4 points – not common but well liked!!
LA Great Danes
Weekly Preview: Two home games for the Danes, who have been in a tailspin and have dropped to 4th place in the Pacific Division.
Yellowknife Braves @ LA Great Danes Central Division leader Yellowknife comes to town, with the Danes having won the 3 previous meetings this year against the Braves.

The teams trade goals in period one with Ehlers and Kuznetsov the goal scorers. The first half of the second period was owned by the Braves, but Frederick Andersen was outstanding, making several key saves included stopping 2 breakaways. The Danes were inspired by their netminder and scored 3 times in the period’s final 3:16, with Thornton, Nurse, and Schenn scoring the goals. Andersen and the Danes defense shut down the Braves in the 3rd, and Robert Hagg scored his first goal of the season late to close out a 5-1 LA win.

Andersen was the game’s #1 star with 40 saves, rebounding from his prior start when he was pulled after letting in 4 goals on 9 shots in 14 minutes versus Alamo. The Braves seem to bring out the best in LA as they sweep the season series 4-0.

Toledo Walleye @ LA Great Danes Next up is Toledo, a team the Danes have not had much success against, including last season’s opening round playoff loss. Two under-performing netminders with below .900 save %’s and GAA’s above 3.00 for the season face off, Dubnyk versus Andersen. And it turned out to be another tough night for the two goalies.

In period 1, Zaitsev scored for Toledo 3 minutes in, but a Sobotka breakaway goal tied it, followed by a Hoffman PPG to give LA a 2-1 lead after the 1st. Three straight goals by Toledo (Van Reimsdyk/Krejci/Animisov) puts them up 4-2,but a late goal by Scheifele gets the Danes back in the game and down only one going into the 3rd.

The Danes open the 3rd with a carry-over power play but cannot convert, but 2 more Toledo penalties result in 2 quick PPG’s for LA (Boedker and Ehlers), putting the Danes back on top 5-4 with 13 minutes left. The Great Danes control play most of the rest of the way, outshooting Toledo 19-5 in the 3rd with 11 scoring chances in the 3rd. Dubnyk keeps Toledo close, but Andersen and the Danes finish strong and come away with the 5-4 win.

Weekly Summary: The Danes win twice at home and at least stay close to the .500 mark in what’s still a tight race for the final playoff spot in the west. Mark Scheifele had two strong games with 5 total points.
Brentwood Bandits
Weekly Preview: One home game for the Bandits. Hopefully we can right the “Road Ship” on this trip. In the meantime, let’s see how the home cooking suits us…
Columbus Brew Jackets @ Brentwood Bandits Columbus skates into town. Coach Tom Atkins has been quiet this season. When asked why he said “When I stopped talking so much to the press, we started winning… why mess with it? And now I just did… thanks guys!”

1st Period

Bandits fire away at Bishop right off the bat, but Bishop turns multiple shots away. Play goes back the other way. Dumped in, line change. Benn grabs it in the corner, passes to Kucherov, over to Miller, slapper… SCORES! Miller’s 14th to give Columbus a 1-0 lead.

Bandits pressure again… firing even more pucks on Bishop, but he moves effortlessly in the crease and saves everything thrown at him like a machine. Faceoff in the Columbus zone.
Columbus wins it, Benn speeds up the right side, over the line. Over to Kucherov, to Burns… slapper… redirect by Benn and it goes in! Vasilevskiy got a piece of it but not enough. Benn with his 22nd of the year gives Columbus a 2-0 lead on the road.

Coach Tom Atkins scans the press boxes… he locks eyes with the reporter who got him to speak. Daggers are not sharp enough… he shoots razor blades at him.

The rest of the period is Bishop standing on his head. Bandits out-shoot the Brew Jackets 17-2 but trail 2-0.

2nd period

Brentwood comes out flying! Hornqvist with the dump and chase. Tavares picks it up… to Hornqvist, over to Kessel, back to Tavares, to Kessel… it’s like the Harlem Globetrotters! Kessel drops it back to Krug who looks for help then fires a slapper on net, Tavares with the deflection… SCORES!! #31 on the season for the Captain. Cuts the lead to 2-1.

Brentwood fires puck after puck on Bishop and he is up to the task until the 19:00 mark when Kessel goes to the point to Krug, who fires a slapper… Tavares with the redirection again! SCORES! #32 and 2nd of the game for Tavares. Game tied 2-2.

3rd period

Will the Brew Jackets finally come out with some life in the 3rd? They do… and it’s Vasilevskiy’s turn to stand tall.

4:42 – Brentwood on the PP. A Krug slapshot… a rebound and a loose puck. Staal knocks it away, but Horvat picks it up, passes cross ice to Eberle who shoots and SCORES! His 12th on the year and the Bandits have their first lead of the game 3-2

6:21 – Bandits on the PP again (6 of them in the game) in the Columbus end. Tavares with the faceoff win, Horny picks it up… fires a sniper pass inside to Kessel who one-times it home! His 22nd of the season and the Bandits now lead 4-2.

Less than 2 minutes left and the Brew Jackets pull Bishop, who has been their best player on the ice tonight.

At the 19:00 mark Kempe fires a pass to Couture who fakes a shot and passes to Frk in the front… HE SCORES! Columbus only trails by 1 now as it’s 4-3 Bandits lead.

Vasilevskiy makes the rest of the saves he needs to make as time ticks down and the Bandits win by a score of 4-3.

Star 1: BWB Tavares 2 G
Star 2: BWB Kessel 1 G, 3 Pts
Star 3: BWB Krug 3 A

Notables: CBJ Edmundson 5 blocks, Bishop 43 saves
BWB Krug 3 assists, Tavares 17 faceoffs won

One thing of note is that the Bandits had 97 shot attempts. 97!! 47 shots making it on net, so 50 attempts missing the net or being blocked (25 blocks by Columbus). Bandits get way more scoring chances (obviously) 28-10.

A great division rival game that could have easily been 10-3 Bandits if it weren’t for Bishop.

Weekly Summary: One home game, two points. The Bandits continue to roll, but coach Tom Atkins, who broke his weeks long silence, put things into perspective saying “No matter who makes the playoffs in the Conference, the Stanley Cup goes through the Jagr Mullets… (laughs) Jagr Mullets… I still can’t believe that we have a team named the ‘Jagr Mullets’ (laughs more)… I need a drink.”
Jagr Mullets
Weekly Preview: Mullets square off against Lafayette and Clearfield.
Lafayette Homesteaders @ Jagr Mullets After a lackluster 1st, Lafayette piles on three goals against Jonathan “Not So” Quick and ultimately wins it 4-1. When your forward with the lowest ice time (Abdelkader, 9:39) scores your only goal something is definitely wrong. The extra skating at practice tomorrow isn’t going to be pleasant.

JAG Quick 30 saves

Clearfield Bison @ Jagr Mullets The stingy Bison come to down and should prove a good test for the high flying Jagr offense.

The Mullets outshoot the Bison nearly 2-1, but it’s Fiala (13) who draws first blood, scoring early in the 2nd. Kadri (19) responds less than 90 seconds later to tie it up, and then less than a minute later Granlund (10) scores to put the Mullets up 2-1.

Patrick Kane, how we loathe thee.

Kane scores at 19:21 to tie it up and force the extra period.

Both teams have chances, but we end up in the shootout!

CLE Rakell Gibson X
JAG Hall Hellebuyck X
CLE Palmieri Gibson X
JAG Matthews Hellebuyck X

And just like that, we lose a point we had in our pocket.

A crappy week for the Mullets; it’s certainly not going to be a Kentucky Waterfall at practice this week.

Notables: CLE Hellebuyck 52 saves, Giroux 24 faceoffs won
JAG Ekholm 8 blocks, Staal 18 faceoffs won, Gibson 36 saves

Weekly Summary: Jagr takes 1 of 4 points at home. For a team with deep playoff aspirations, it’s not acceptable. We expect the boys to right the ship on the road.
Cincinnati Inferno
Weekly Preview: The Cincinnati Inferno enter the week teetering on the brink of being in the postseason. With two important contests against Jagr and Thunder Bay at The Incinerator, this could be a week to help paint a better picture.
Jagr Mullets @ Cincinnati Inferno For the second time in two weeks, Jagr rolls in–fresh off a 1-0 win at Cincinnati in their most recent visit.

The Mullets made sure a defensive struggle was not happening this week, as they scored 8:11 in When Alex Ovechkin netted his 26th on a tip-in. Before the period ended, Markus Granlund finished a three-on-two rush for his tenth of the campaing and Jagr was up 2-0 after 20 minutes.

In the second, David Perron banged home his eleventh at 3:32, stepping past a Jagr D-man to cut the deficit in half. Sidney Crosby tied the game with a tipped in shot wen through a screen at 15:32 for his twelfth lamplighter of the year.

The Crosby goal was the tipping point of the game.

Fourteen seconds after the goal, the Mullets responded with Nazem Kadri burying his 19th goal off a wrister at 15:46. It was just a precursor of what was to come and Jagr held a 3-2 edge entering the third.

Twenty-three seconds into the third, Patrick Laine celebrated his 26th goal on a power play tip-in and Alexander Radulov picked up his eighth tally on a power play shot that went trapper side high and Jagr had a three-goal lead.

The Inferno would get one back at 17:32 when Brock Boeser fired home is 17th of the year, but would give the goal back on an empty net tally on Taylor Hall’s 24th score at 18:39 to maintain the three-goal edge. John Carlson’s third score of the campaign with ten seconds left helped ease the sting, but Jagr skated off with the 6-4 win.

Cincinnati won the shots battle, 40-30. John Gibson stopping 36 shots for the winners, while Carter Hutton turned away 24 shots for Cincinnati. The Mullets blocked 21 shots, as Cincinnati experimented with a new offensive philosophy for the contest. The Mullets were two-for-two on the power play–improving to a season-best 20 games above .500, while Cincinnati maintains second place in the Atlantic Division and on the outside looking in for the playoff picture.

Thunder Bay NorWesters @ Cincinnati Inferno Thunder Bay tried to establish control in this one early, as Aleksander Barkov scored twelve seconds in (his 13th) to give the NorWesters the quick lead. Cincinnati would bounce back by scoring the next six goals in the contest to put it away. Brock McGinn (first at 5:52) and Sidney Crosby (13hth at 9:510 would give the Inferno a 2-1 edge after the first period.

Cincinnati would use goals 13 seconds apart in the second to gain a 4-1 edge after 40 minutes. John Carlson’s power play tally at 13:29 was his fourth and Brayden Point’s eleventh at 13:42 built the three-goal cushion.

In the third, Point picked up his second of the game at 8:32 and Vladislav Namestnikov’s twelfth at 10:18 made it 6-1. Thunder Bay would cut the lead in half by scoring the next two goals, from Tomas Tatr (first at 12:32) and Andreas Athanasiou (eighth at 14:40). The Inferno poured it on at the end, as Melker Karlsson’s first as a Cincinnati player came at 15:41 and Carlson collected his second of the night at 19:32 to close out the 8-3 score.

The NorWesters held the shots advantage, 42-34. Carter Hutton re-routed 37 shots, while James Reimer stopped 26. Cincinnati had 15 blocks in the game and out-chanced Thunder Bay, 16-7. The Inferno were one-for-one on the power play, while the NorWesters were shutout in their only chance with the man-advantage.

Brayden Point was involved in half the scoring (2-2-4) for Cincinnati and the Inferno set a club record with eight goals scored.

Weekly Summary: Cincinnati gains a split on the week and is still a point out of a playoff spot. The Inferno will be keeping a close eye on potential deals to get better with the trade deadline hovering four weeks away.

Guentzel Gunners @ Bucks County Raccoons Sam Bennett breaks a 2-2 tie in the third period with the game winner with less than 5 minutes to go as the Racs hold on to defeat the Gunners 3-2. BCR outshot the visitors by 38-22, helped in large part to 6 PP chances to 1 for the visitors. Jake Allen made like Bernie Parent in the final minutes backstopping the Guentzel onslaught in an attempt to tie the game.
Brentwood Bandits @ Bucks County Raccoons Riley Sheahan scores for the 2nd and 3rd time on the homestand and Brandon Dubinsky notches his first of the year late in the 3rd to send the Raccoons to a 3-2 win over the Brentwood Bandits. Both of Brentwood’s goals came on the PP, and Jake Allen did his finest Bernie Parent impression in the final minute, stopping 6 Bandit shots.
Weekly Summary: A different pattern this week, as the Bandits fall behind in both games, tie it in the 2nd and score late in the third to take 4 points at home. Good post holiday start for the good guys.

Charlotte Buzzards
Weekly Preview: Charlotte hosted Bucks County and California in this latest stretch, as the Buzzards eclipse .500 but remain mired in fourth in this competitive Atlantic division.
Bucks County Raccoons @ Charlotte Buzzards Charlotte struck for the first four goals en route to the 5-2 win over the Raccoons. Michael Grabner, Vince Trocheck and Anders Lee all found the net prior to defenseman Erik Johnson’s short handed goal 7 minutes into the second period helped put the game away. The Bucks County draught ended later in the second period on a Connor McDavid goal, but Lee scored his second goal of the contest early in the third period which was more than enough. The Raccoons scored their own shorthanded goal late in the third, recorded by Timo Meir, with the game out of reach. Goalie Anti Raanta made 29 saves in a fine effort for the win.
California Regulators @ Charlotte Buzzards The Buzzards pulled out a thriller in overtime, 6-5, over the Pacific leading Regulators. Lee starred again, this time with the game-tying goal with just 13 seconds to play, off a Craig Smith assist. In the extra five minutes Smith provided the game winning goal with just over a minute left, with the assists coming from the other two Buzzards on the ice, Joe Pavelski and Tyler Myers. The Regulators had rallied to erase a first period 4-1 Charlotte lead, and Sam Reinhart’s goal provided California with a short-lived 5-4 lead before Lee’s heroics.
Weekly Summary: Charlotte gets two uplifting wins to keep its fading playoff hopes somewhat alive. To quote Lloyd Christmas: “So you’re telling me there’s a chance.”
Toledo Walleye
Weekly Preview: Two scavengers, the Gilbert Sharks and Charlotte Buzzard wander to Lake Erie to take on the Walleye. A trio of teams floating around one point per game.
Gilbert Sharks @ Toledo Walleye Sharks 5, Walleye 2 – Toledo outshoots the Sharks 17-3 the first period, but both goalies are up to the task and the first period ends scoreless.

Must have been one heck of a meeting in the lockerroom for the Sharks, and they come out red hot, scoring 4 (Perreault, Danault, Panarin and Josi) before Toledo wakes up and answers one late in the period (Foligno) and the period ends 4-1 Sharks.

Toledo generates a bit of excitement with the first goal (Vanek) in the 3rd to close it to 4-2, but that quickly dies. Josi adds an empty netter for the visitors before the game mercifully ends at 5-2 Sharks.

Toledo end up outshooting the Sharks 59-21 and Rask saves an amazing 57 shots to earn the 1st star.
Josi with 2 goals for the 2nd
Panarin 1g1a for the 3rd star.

Charlotte Buzzards @ Toledo Walleye Walleye 2, Buzzards 0 – The Walleye switch to McElhiney in goal and it works magic on this night. Both he and Lundqvist are perfect in the 1st period, ,stopping all the shots, and it goes to intermission 0-0.

The 2nd period sees the same amount of frustration for the skaters until Anisimov breaks the seal and scores with 20 seconds left to give the home team the lead at intermission.

More good tending in the 3rd until Toledo takes the advantage of a power play (Spooner) to double the score. McElhiney makes it stand. 2-0 Toledo

1st star McElhiney shutout
2nd Spooner
3rd Anisimov

Weekly Summary: Two good goaltending jobs this week in Toledo.

Rask saves 57 of 59 on the way to a 5-2 win for Gilbert.
McElhiney pitches a shutout with 33 saves against Charlotte.

Weekly Preview: Not feeling well – sorry – winter cold
Long Beach Ice Dogs @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers Long Beach 2 Thunder Bay 4
Lafayette Homesteaders @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers Lafayette 5 – Thunder Bay 4

Clearfield Bison
Weekly Preview: Cincinnati, Chicago and Bathgate come to wherever Clearfield is this week
Cincinnati Inferno @ Clearfield Bison big division game, Clearfield allows a goal in the last 96 seconds to guarantee both teams a point. the bison overcome the late goal against to win the shootout.
Chicago Cosa Nostra @ Clearfield Bison boring game with no goals in the 1st 2 periods…both teams score 2 in the 3rd… Chicago wins shootout
Bathgate Rangers @ Clearfield Bison another game with lack of goalscoring…kane scores winning goal with 1:04 left
Weekly Summary: 5 of 6 points is slightly disappointing, shouldve been better
