LA Great Danes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Home games versus California and Guentzel
California Regulators @ LA Great Danes A Pacific Division matchup of 1st place Cal vs last-place LA. The Great Danes play this like it’s the playoffs, and it’s a tight, physical game with more hits (59) than SOG (50).

Kasperi Kapanen opens the scoring 6:43 in off an odd-man rush, and it ends up being the only even-strength goal of the game. Mark Stone ties it for Cal on the power play at 9:14 of the 1st, and it stays that way until a Mark Scheifele PPG in the last minute of the 2nd. So the Danes take a 2-1 lead into the third. It’s 2-1 late, and LA misses a couple of empty net chances but win a late face-off to close out a 2-1 win.

Goal scorers Kapanen and Scheifele earn the first 2 stars of the game, and Brayden Schenn’s 2 assists earn him the 3rd star. A very strong effort by LA in this one as they hold a 23-9 scoring chance advantage for the game.

Guentzel Gunners @ LA Great Danes With a win over Cal, the Danes look for their first home sweep of this season, but it was not to be. Semyon Varlamov gets the start for LA, and he gives up 3 first period goals on 3 scoring chances. Guentzel goals by Erne, Bjugstad, and Bjugstad again, with an Ehlers goal for LA sandwiched betweeen Bjugstad’s goals put Guentzel up 3-1 after one.

Frederick Andersen replaces Varlamov after the first and stops all 14 shots the rest of the way. But LA’s offense is non-existent the last 2 periods with 1 single scoring chance over the last 2 periods after having 6 in the 1st period.

So the 3-1 score holds up as the Gunners get the road win. 3rd period SOG were only 3-3 until the last 5 monutes, as the Gunners turned into a neutral zone trap team and allowed LA no space to do anything.

The game’s 3 stars all go to Guentzel, but not the players you would have expected. Bjugstad was #1 with 2 goals, Erne had 1G-1A, and Boychuck had 3 assists.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: MWHL Frederick Andersen feels like NHL Frederick Andersen as the backup goalies continue to be mediocre. Andersen saved 37 of 38 shots over 5 periods, while Varlamov’s 3 GA on 3 chances in one period may open the door for Casey DeSmith to get some playing time despite his 4.86 GAA and .841 save %.
Gilbert Sharks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Gilbert has 2 home games in Week 9
Yellowknife Braves @ Gilbert Sharks Gilbert jumps out to the 2-0 lead in the first period looking for the upset. Yellowknife cuts the lead in half late in the 2nd period and then gets 2 goals in the last 3 minutes to win the game. Final Yellowknife 3, Gilbert 2
Cincinnati Inferno @ Gilbert Sharks Gilbert comes out flat in this one as Cincinatti scores 3 times in the first 3 minutes and contiues to pour it on. Final Cincinatti 9, Gilbert 4
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Gilbert continues to lose in frustrating ways
Alamo Defenders
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte and Bathgate travel to San Antonio to take on the Defenders.
Charlotte Buzzards @ Alamo Defenders In the 1st, Lee scores his 10th goal for the Buzzards.

2nd period – Draisaitl ties it up. 1-1 after 2 periods.

3rd period – McAvoy scores his 2nd, and the Defenders take the lead. Halfway through the 3rd, Marner scores and it’s tied again. With 2:02 to go, Draisaitl scores his 2nd of the game for an Alamo victory.

Alamo 3 Charlotte 2

1st – Draisaitl
2nd – McAvoy
3rd – Lee

Bathgate Rangers @ Alamo Defenders Bathgate scores the first goals – courtesy of Buchnevich and Anderson.

Alamo scores the next three goals. Seguin, Okposo, and Marchand all score.

With 33 seconds to go, Anderson ties the game for the Rangers.

OT goes the way of the Rangers. Hertl scores and the Rangers win!

Bathgate 4 Alamo 3 (OT)

1st – Anderson 2 goals
2nd – Buchnevich
3rd – Hertl

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Alamo defeats Charlotte and loses in OT to Bathgate.
Cincinnati Inferno
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Cincinnati hosts a pair of home games this week and gets a BONUS with a road game with Guentzel that we get to play. The Inferno start the week tied with the Gunners for last place in the Atlantic Division.
Cincinnati Inferno @ Guentzel Gunners Guentzel 5, Cincinnati 3

Jake Gunetzel’s two first period goals paved the way to the Gunners win. Garnet Hathaway’s empty net goal with 55 seconds left sealed the win for Gunetzel.

Braden Holtby’s 37 saves paced the defensive effort, as the Gunners blocked 21 shots in the triumph–and sole possession of thrid place in the division.

Jagr Mullets @ Cincinnati Inferno Cincinnati 4, Jagr 3

Jeff Skinner’s power play goal with 1:31 remaining in the second period was the final goal of the contest and gave the Inferno the victory.

The Paul’s (Byron and Stastny), each had a goal and an assist and Connor Hellebuyck turned aside 26 shots in the win.

The Mullets had goals from their first and third lines and one of their defensemen. Jagr had 56 shot attempts in the contest.

Chicago Cosa Nostra @ Cincinnati Inferno Cincinnati 6, Chicago 5

The Costa Nostra scored three power play goals, but couldn’t get Cincinnati to take enough penalties (four) to convert more. Chicago launched 74 shot attempts at the Inferno net in the defeat.

Brock Boesser (CIN) and Alex DeBrincat (CHI) each had a pair of goals in the high-scoring affair. Connor Hellebucyk stopped 32 shots for the winners, while Petr Mrazek turned aside 29 in the defeat.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Cincinnati wins both games of the homestand and gets the loss in the ‘road’ game with Guentzel to temporarily move into third place in the division.
Bucks County Raccoons
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Three home games against stingy Alamo and two games against below .500 clubs in Guentzel and Gilbert….
Alamo Defenders @ Bucks County Raccoons As expected, goals were hard to come by as the top two defensive teams in the MWHL square off. Alamo scores a PP goal in the first period, a 2nd goal in the first minute of the 3rd period, an an empty netter go gain the victory 3-0.
Guentzel Gunners @ Bucks County Raccoons With Andrew Shaw off for 5 minutes for checking from behind, Guentzel scored 2 goals on the PP, but BC also notched a short handed goal on the same PP that saw the first period end tied at 2. Palat scored for Guentzel 6 minutes into the third but Meier knotted it at 12 minutes of the 3rd to send the game into OT/SO, where McDavid ended the suspense by scoring 32 seconds into OT and give BC a record of 5-0 in OT/SO games. The Gunners will be emailed a coupon to redeem at their leisure for the thanks for coming, nice to have you in town participation point.
Gilbert Sharks @ Bucks County Raccoons Nobody, but nobody, circles the wagons like the Gilbert Sharks. Entering the game next to last in standings point, the Sharks came out hungry and skated to a 3-2 win of the bewildered Bucks County Raccoons. Gilbert scored twice in the 1st period, once short handed, added a third goal midway through the second, and then held on for the bumpy landing that was sure to come in the 3rd .
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Very disappointing week for the home town 5, as they picked up only 2 of a possible 6 points against teams 3 teams below them in stadings, and now the questions are starting to come fast and furious from the media. Will Jack Campbell regain the touch he had earlier in the season (13 goals allowed in the last 3 games) will Conner McDavid shake out of the doldrums (on pace for only 24 goals this season), will Gilligan ever get off the island??? Lots of questions but not many answers at this point of the season.
Charlotte Buzzards
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Charlotte Buzzard showing signals they could be a playoff contender, hosted three games this latest week, with challenges against Brentwood, LA and Chicago.
Brentwood Bandits @ Charlotte Buzzards In a back and forth slugfest that saw four lead changes, Charlotte prevailed 6-5 against the favored Bandits, with Jon Marchessault providing the game winning goal with 36 seconds left in regulation. Travis Konecny, the first star, scored Brentwood’s first goal and tied the game at 5 with six minutes left in regulation, in a losing effort. Charlotte’s Mitch Marner and Doug Hamilton were second and third stars with a goal apiece.
Chicago Cosa Nostra @ Charlotte Buzzards The Costra Nostra get to Charlotte backup goalie Louis Domingue early, hammering home the game’s first three goals in the first 16 minutes of play, en route to a 4-2 win. Charlotte attempted to rally, cutting the lead to 3-2, but Jonathan Toews found the empty net for Chicago to put the game on ice with 10 seconds remaining. Peter Mrazek delivered 38 saves to secure the win for the Costra Nostra.
LA Great Danes @ Charlotte Buzzards The Buzzards suffer their greatest letdown of the season, relinquishing a 3-1 third period lead and faltering to the Great Danes 4-3.Goals by Teuvo Teravainen, Kasperi Kapanen and Mark Sheifele slip past a different Charlotte backup goalie starting in the nets, Jake Allen. Frederik Anderson shined for LA, recording 42 saves to spearhead the comeback.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte endures yet another disappointing homestand, netting only 2 of a possible six points. The Buzzards start two backup goalies for the first time this season during all three home games and pay the price for resting Carey Price, especially in the 4-3 choke job to LA.
Toledo Walleye
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two division leaders, Jagr and California, will take on the Walleye this week.
Jagr Mullets @ Toledo Walleye Walleye 6, Mullets 3 – Toledo comes out like we wish they would every game, scoring 3 in the first period (Pettersson, Vanek and Lindell) while Binnington shut down the Jagr offense. Period ends 3-0 Toledo.

2nd – The Walleye attack continues as Lindell gets his 2nd of the game. Jagr offense wakes up with goals from Tkachuk and Letang to cut the lead in half 4-2. Toledo throws a monkey wrench in the comeback attempt just before end of the 2nd when Dadonov ends a long scoring drought for him, and makes it 5-2. 3 goal lead with 20 minutes to go.

3rd – Jagr still has some fight left and Ovechkin cuts the lead back to 2 with 14 minutes to go, and the crowd starts to perk up again. But its the defenses that take the upper hand at both ends, and no goals are scored until the final minute when Krejci adds a meaningless empty netter just before the final horn.

1st star – Lindell 2G, 4pts
2nd – Krejci 1G 2pts
3rd – Pettersson 1G 2pts

California Regulators @ Toledo Walleye California 5, Toledo 4 – The visitors start scoring off early, with Spurgeon getting one past Dubnyk before 2 minutes are gone. That’s pretty much it for the first period until Arvidsson scores for the home team to tie things up heading into intermission.

Cal takes the lead again right off the opening faceoff when Stone blasts one in after just 11 seconds on the powerplay. Toledo responds with both the equalizer, and tie breaker as Mantha and Krejci score 4 minutes apart in the middle of the 2nd. Toledo is feeling pretty good about things until Stall and Nelson turn the tables, and scoreboard around, making it 4-3 California headed to intermission.

A tight 3rd period, until Toledo ties it for the 5th time at 4-4, and half a period to go. Then the big mistake when Mantha is caught with a slash, and Stall makes it a payoff goal with 7 minutes to go. Khudobin is a rock the rest of the way and the Regulators hold on for a big road win. 5-4

1st star – Staal 2G
2nd = Nelson 1G
3rd = Spurgeon 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: one win and one loss brings the Walleye record against division leaders to 3-8. Not the numbers you want if you want to make the playoffs. More work ahead.
California Regulators
Lafayette Homesteaders @ California Regulators LAF – 3
CAL – 0Stars:
Bobrovsky 40 saves
Eichel 1G
Garland 1G
Thunder Bay NorWesters @ California Regulators TBN – 5
CAL – 8Stars:
Barkov 2 G, 3 pts
Gaudreau 1G, 3 Pts
Landeskog 1G, 3 PtsYes, the game names two Thunder Bay players as “stars” even though California puts 8 into the net. 8 goals by 8 players. I’ll take it.
WEEKLY SUMMARY: California splits at home.
Brentwood Bandits
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games for the defending champs… still unsure if we are a trade or two away from making a run at defending, or if we should pack it in and rebuild. Rumor is that neither Tavares nor Kessel have garnered enough quality interest yet. I guess we’ll see how it goes!
Gilbert Sharks @ Brentwood Bandits Gilbert comes in and outshoots the Bandits 49-33 and winning by the score of 6-5. Matt Murray tried his best making 43 saves, but was shell-shocked.

Tavares gets 2G, 1A and Debrusk 2G in the losing effort.

LA Great Danes @ Brentwood Bandits Will the Great Danes be great? Or will they be the “Meh” Danes?

All scoring was in the 2nd period. 4 goals. All from Brentwood as they win by a score of 4-0 and Vasilevskiy gets his 2nd shut out of the season.

Konecny scores his 4th and 5th of the season.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 2 games, 1 win… 2 points. Still unsure of how to proceed.

Coach Tom Atkins was a no-show at his press conference.
