WEEKLY SUMMARY: Chicago grabs 2 out of a possible 4 points at home this week. Hopefully, the road will be much nicer to the Cosa Nostra.
New Jersey Black Aces
Toledo Walleye @ New Jersey Black Aces A defensive battle turned out to be a gut check for the winless Black Aces.Carter Hart, playing his first game of the young season, stopped 37 shots while Conor Garland and Anthony Cirelli scored the goals in the shootout leading NJ and coach Olivacz to the first win of the season. Noah Hanafin scored the only goal in regulation

——————————————————————————-

Bucks County Raccoons @ New Jersey Black Aces Bucks County came into NJ was was dominated everywhere but where it counts most, the score board. Ben Bishop made 43 saves and got 2 goals from Zack Hyman and one from Jimmy Vesey to beat NJ, 3-1. Bucks County only had 18 shots on goal. Noah Hanfin scored for the second straight game in the loss

——————————————————

Alamo Defenders @ New Jersey Black Aces A tough way to lose for NJ. Leading 2-1 heading into the final minute, Zach Parise and Jesper Bratt scored 5 seconds apart to stun the home crowd, 3-2

——————————–

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1-2
LA Great Danes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Tough home schedule with games against Jagr and Chicago

——————————————————————–

Jagr Mullets @ LA Great Danes 12 seconds in, Ovechhkin hits the post, but LA controls play early after that, but Jagr’s first SOG goes in, Svechnikov at 4:58. Only 7 SOG for Jagr in period 1, but Ristolainen’s goal puts them up 2-0,11 seconds after a feeble LA power play. 57 seconds into period 2, Matthews scores on a wrap-around. A Bergeron PPG comes 13 seconds after an LA penalty midway through the 2nd, and it’s 4-0 Jagr after 2.

Miro Heiskanen breaks up the shutout 1:48 into the 3rd, but no more scoring, and Jagr coasts to an easy 4-1 win. A low SOG total at 27-25 in favor of LA. Bergeron, Ristolainen, and Svechnikov are the game’s 3 stars, all with 1G-1A each for Jagr.

The post game stats show Kuemper’s goalie rating at 8.5, while Varlamov’s rating for LA was -2.1 for an adjusted rating of 5.1, so LA’s goaltending woes early in the season continue.

———————————————————–

Chicago Cosa Nostra @ LA Great Danes No suspense in this one as the Danes hit a new low, getting embarrassed 9-3. It was 0-3 after one, 1-6 after two, and 1-8 in the 3rd before the Danes get a couple past Blackwood in the last half of the 3rd.

After last week’s 20% kill rate at home, the Danes set an all-time MWHL record for the most PPG’s against in the least amount of time. Chicago goes 5-5 on the PP in just 1:59 of total PP time, the longest PP time being 31 seconds.

Lots of stat-padding for Chicago, led by a Jonathan Toews hat trick, and Joel Edmundson with a career night with 3 assists.

Once again, post-game goalie stats show a dramatic difference in goaltending – Blackwood +1.0 for Chi to 8.3, and Talbot -0.6 and Varlamov -1.0.

——————————————–

WEEKLY SUMMARY: The Great Danes disastrous start to the season continues. A save % of .776 in the two home games this week, and an incredibly bad penalty-killing performance leave the Danes with 6 losses in 7 games to date, no regulation wins, and getting outscored by more than a 2 to 1 margin. The high hopes before the season are long gone.
Jagr Mullets
WEEKLY PREVIEW:  A pair of home games against Portland and Alamo.

————————————————————–

Portland Storm @  Jagr Mullets It’s Patrice Bergeron’s world and he just lets us live here.

Bergeron scores his 7th of the year to open the scoring, and the Mullets hold on to win it 3-2. Bergeron has 15 faceoff wins as well as the Mullets advance to 4-0-0-0.

Alamo Defenders @  Jagr Mullets A battle of heavyweights.

It’s 2-2 heading into the 3rd, when both Korpisalo and Markstrom start leaking like a cheap boat.

The teams trade the lead until Ovechkin (3) scores at 15:36 to tie it up… but original Mullet draftee Steven Stamkos (4) haunts his former club with a goal with 27 seconds remaining to give Alamo the big victory and advance them to 4-0-0-1.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A tough loss against Alamo, but we like the start of our season so far.
Alamo Defenders
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Alamo hosts Charlotte for their only scheduled home game of the week.

——————————————————————————-

Charlotte Buzzards @ Alamo Defenders Charlotte dominates the first period and had Alamo on its heels. Alamo, though, scores the first goal as Crosby scores with 1:48 remaining in the 1st period. The Buzzards retaliate quickly as Rowney scores his 2nd goal of the season 12 seconds after the Crosby goal.

In the 2nd period, Crosby scores his 2nd to put the Defenders up, 2-1. Then, the Defenders go short-handed and are two men down. With 31 seconds to go in the 2nd, Brad Marchand scores his 3rd goal of the year. At the end of 2, its, 3-1, Alamo.

The 3rd period is actually a good checking period with Alamo having the slight advantage in shots.

But, no goals are scored in the 3rd, and Alamo wins 3-1.

Alamo 3 Charlotte 1

SOG: Alamo 31-Charlotte 30

1st star – Crosby 2 goals 1 assist
2nd star – Marchand 1 goal 1 assist
3rd star – Bratt 3 assists

Korpisalo earns the win over Jarry.

——————————————-

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Alamo defeats Charlotte, 3 to 1 in their only home game scheduled for the week.

Shots were more reasonable in this game as compared to the first week.

Gilbert Sharks
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Gilbert with just 1 home game in Week 2 versus Jagr

————————————————————–

Jagr Mullets @ Gilbert Sharks This one has a familiar story for Gilbert. They get off to a great start with goals from Fiala and Mckinnon in the 1st Period. Jagr storms back with goals from Tkachuk and Miller and we go to the 3rd period tied 2-2. Jagr strikes first in the 3rd and goes up 3-2 on a score from Duchene but Gilbert looks like they can reverse their fortune with goals from Makar and Coyle to lead 4-3 with less than a minute left. Unfortunately for Gilbert, Tkachuk scores his 2nd of the game to tie it up and with just 16 seconds left in the game Ovechkin pots the Game Winner to give Jagr the 5-4 victory.

————————————————————————

WEEKLY SUMMARY: It will be a long season for Gilbert unless they can figure out how to play as well in the 3rd period as they do in the 1st.
Toledo Walleye
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Toledo (2-2-0) takes on California (3-1-0) and Brentwood (2-0-1) this week. A good test for a revamped offense.

——————————————————————–

California Regulators @ Toledo Walleye Toledo 2, California 1 – Toledo jumps out early with goals by Hoffman and Nosek to take a 2 goal lead in the 1st. The 2nd period is very conservative with only 13 shots on goal by both teams. The Walleye give the Regulator 2 good chances with powerplays, but California is unable to convert either. 2nd period ends 2-0. Strong defense continues for the Walleye in the 3rd period. The visitors are finally able to crack through against Demko, scoring one by Spurgeon with just under 6 minutes to go. The fish are able to hang on however and glad to get the W.

1st star – Demko 30 saves
2nd – Hoffman 1G
3rd – Nosek 1G

—————————–

Brentwood Bandits @ Toledo Walleye Brentwood 3, Toledo 2 – Brentwood on the board early with Debrusk drawing first blood. The Walleye squander a powerplay in the period, but then Pettersson bails them out with a tying goal late in the period to make it 1-1. Connolly puts the Bandits back on top early in period 2 only to see Hoffman cover that with a goal of his own a little later. The Bandits also fail on the only powerplay in period 2, and it ends at 2-2..

Third period is tight as a drum as the tie persists until just under 2 minutes remain, and Connolly finds an opening past Binnington, makes it 3-2.

1st star – Connolly 2G
2nd – Vasilevskiy 33 saves
3rd – Debrusk 1G

————————————————

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Toledo meanders forward at 3-3, looking to find a combination that can kick them up above .500. Plenty of time left.

The software update seems to have calmed the scoring down a bit. We’ll see if that ends up helping.

Bathgate Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 2 more home games this week – and with all the updates going on, it will be interesting to see if the amazing SOGs from week 1 continue….

—————————————————————————–

Cincinnati Inferno @ Bathgate Rangers The Inferno come in with a 3-1 record from week 1 – really nice start. Wish we could have done that.
Rangers decide they want to take control of this game and score early (and often) – sounds like voting, and then see if the SOG onslaught happens. So Hertl (1) and Buchnevich (1) record their first goals of the year in the 1st period – and Halak stops all – WHAT? – only 6 shots.
Period 2 – Cincinnati makes up for the dirth of 1st period shooting and fires 18 shots on Halak – and he stops off them too. So we go to period 3 with the Rangers holding a 2-0 lead. For the record, this is where we usually fall apart (historically).
However, period 3 opens with Provorov taking advantage of a Pesce penalty and scoring the PP goal for Bathgate and they have a nice 3-0 lead. We move into the final 2 minutes that way and the Inferno pull out the kitchen sink and Hellebuyck and there’s a goal – but it’s Bathgate’s Vrana who gets the EN goal – his 1st of the year and it’s 4-1. Cincinnati doesn’t give up however, but they do send Hellebuyck back to the goal and his presence allows their skaters freedom to work one up ice, into the Pageau deflects a Toffoli shot past Halak with 12 seconds left to make the score look closer at 4-2 Bathgate.
STARS
1. BGR – Halak 34 saves
2. BGR – Provorov 1 goal, 1 assist
3. CIN – Toffoli 1 goal, 1 assist
SHOTS- Rangers take only 9 shots total for the 2nd and 3rd periods! But they finally stop some power plays and CIN goes 0 for 3 on the fun times.———————————-
Charlotte Buzzards @ Bathgate Rangers Well – Rangers again off to good home stand and in this one they score first – 35 seconds into Period 2. ZBad gets one from Vrana and Tatar. BUT 14 stinking seconds later, Marner beats Halak to tie it up. Marner had won the face-off after the Rangers goal, it goes back to Johnson, and they slide it up ice, and then a delayed penalty is called and Johnson gets it back to Marner at the point and rips a slot shot that flies past Halak. But the Rangers buckle down and then Hischier scores just past the midway point in the period and the Rangers end up skating to the locker room up 2-1 after 2!
The game stays that way until midway through the 3rd when Marchessault ties it up. We head into the final 2 minutes and former Ranger Killorn gets the puck – shots and scores. However, the goal was reviewed for quite a while (the connection to Toronto was faulty) – but the goal stood up and Charlotte grabbed the 3-2 lead. Rangers wanted to get Halak off for the rest of the game, but Charlotte maintained control until the final 18 seconds – then the extra skater came on but it was too late and the Buzzards win the game 3-2 – ugh!
STARS – (all CHA)
1. Marner 1 goal, 1 assist
2. Killorn 1 goal
3. Marchessault 1 goal—————————————————————–
WEEKLY SUMMARY: 2 games, 2 points, 1 win. Need to boost the shot attempts!! BUT WE did stop 8 of 8 power play attempts (we only stopped 1 of 7 at home last week!!). So there was some improvement (or else CIN and CHA stink, or they really changed things in the UPDATES!)
Cincinnati Inferno
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The New Jersey Black Aces roll into The Incinerator for the lone home game on Cincinnati’s schedule for the week. This is the first-ever meeting for these Atlantic Division rivals.

———————————————————

New Jersey Black Aces @ Cincinnati Inferno New Jersey gets three power play opportunities in the opening term, but Elvis Merzlikins is up to the task–turning aside all 19 shots face in the first. The Inferno got the only goal of the frame, as Jean-Gabriel Pageau collected his second goal of the season at 8:22 on a wraparound–grabbing a rebound of his own shot and circling the cage for the 1-0 edge. Jaden Schwartz and John Carlason had the assists.

In the second period, Cincinnati’s defensive effort was present — as the Inferno held New Jersey without a shot for the first 10:13. At 11:48, Jaden Schwartz worked around Brendan Perlini and slipped a shot low glove-side past Carter Hart to extend the lead to 2-0. The unlikely combination of Riley Stillman and Brayden McNabb had the helpers. Cincinnati claimed the shots battle in the second, 13-5, but the Black Aces had the upper hand through two at 24-22.

The third period was scoreless, with the Black Aces holding the edge in shots at 12-8. For the game, New Jersey won the shots lead at 36-30.

Elvis Merzlikins collected the shutout win in his season debut, stopping all 36 shots. Carter Hart took the loss, limiting the Inferno to two goals and turning away 28 shots. Both teams were shutout on the power play, with each having four opportunities with the man-advantage. Cincinnati led in hits (30-27), faceoffs won (33-22) and blocks (25-10), while New Jersey led in attempts (75-58).

——————————————————————————————————

WEEKLY SUMMARY: After permitting an alarming number of shots and goals in the opening week, Cincinnati returned to a style more like what was diagrammed in the off-season. The Inferno are now 2-0 at home (5-1 with three more road games this week) and will welcome a trio of foes to town next week.
Bucks County Raccoons
WEEKLY PREVIEW: After a rocky voyage to start the season with 3 road games, the defending division champs hope to right the ship with 2 game at home in week 2.

————————————-

Gilbert Sharks @ Bucks County Raccoons Evander Kane scored the only goal in the shootout as BCR defeated the Gilbert Sharks 2-1 in OT SO. Wilson (BCR) and Fiala (GIL) scored in the 1st period and from then on it was a battle of goalies and defense. The Sharks can pick up their charity point on the way out the door as well as the lovely table setting at table 6, and thanks for playing….

————————————————————————————-

Bathgate Rangers @ Bucks County Raccoons The Racs scored in all 3 periods and limited the visiting Rangers to only 5 scoring chances for the game and defeated Bathgate by the score of 3-1. In what may be an MHL first and certainly a first for Bucks County, there were no penalties called in the game.

—————————————————————————————

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Smooth sailing for the home team as they only allow 2 goals in 2 games plus an overtime period to get back to .500 on the young season. As the Skipper would say on Gilligan’s Island, “that’s Raccoon hockey little buddy”.

Brentwood Bandits
WEEKLY PREVIEW: After a good opening week, Brentwood looks to keep it going against Chicago (to whom we lost on the road last week in OT) and Thunder Bay.

———————————-

Chicago Cosa Nostra @ Brentwood Bandits The Bandits fight back down 2-0 to make it 3-2 early in the 3rd, but Chicago scores 3 unanswered goals as Dubois, Pastrnak, and Dadonov all score their 4th goals on the young season. Chicago steals one from the Bandits, 5-3.

Vasilevskiy wasn’t very good. Needs to be better, as does the defense.

—————————————————————-

Thunder Bay NorWesters @ Brentwood Bandits Nilsson gets the start as Vasilevskiy looked shaky in the last game (really, it’s because of game limitations, but play along!)

The Bandits only get ONE shot on goal in the 1st period. Only ONE?! Thunder Bay scores 1 in the 1st to make it 1-0.

Bandits get 10 SOG in the 2nd and hold Thunder Bay to 4. Bandits manage to get 2 goals from Vatrano (PP) and Kessel to make it 2-1.

3rd period sees O’Reilly tie it on the PP… 2-2.

Go to OT. Nobody scores.

Go to shootout…

Connor vs. Nilsson… SAVED
Tavares vs. Koskinen… SAVED
Smith vs. Nilsson… GOAL!
Konecny vs. Koskinen… GOAL!
Eichel vs. Nilsson… SAVED
Debrusk vs. Koskinen… GOAL!!

Bandits win it in a shootout, 3-2!

———————————————————-

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Bandits win 1 of 2 at home. Not bad, not good. We’ll call it an even week. Gonna have to play better if we plan to compete against Jagr and Cincinnati.
Charlotte Buzzards
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte, fast out of the gates with a Week 1 record of 3-1, gets a good litmus test as it hosts the MWHL finalist Brentwood Bandits in its only home game of week 2.

—————————————

Brentwood Bandits @ Charlotte Buzzards Powered by two goals from Jake Debrusk, Brentwood, undefeated coming into this week’s play, outplays Charlotte and wins 4-1. Debrusk received credit for the eventual game winner 7 minutes into the second period on his first goal that put the Bandits ahead 2-0 at the time. Charlotte left winger Jon Marchessault scored his team’s lone goal on the power play 4:41 into the third to narrow the margin to 2-1. But Debrusk provided a helpful insurance goal (assisted by Taveres and Konecny) with 10:24 left in the third, making it 3-1. Roman Josi added an empty netter with 1:14 showing on the clock to close the scoring in a contest closer than the final outcome.

Charlotte was unable to solve Andrei Vasilevskiy who registered 37 saves, with the only blemish being the Marchessault goal. The Buzzards suffered from 17 missed net opportunities and the Bandits for their part blocked an impressive 20 shots while winning the faceoff war 38-28. Vacilevskiy was better in net than Charlotte’s Tristan Jarry (29 saves) It all added up to a decisive Brentwood victory.

Three stars all from Brentwood:
Star 1: Debrusk with his two goals
Star 2: John Taveres who opened the scoring with a goal and finished with 3 points total.
Star 3: Vasilevskiy (37 saves)

Notable: Travis Konecny, while missing a three-star selection, assists on all four Bandits goals.

—————————————————————————

WEEKLY SUMMARY: With the latest upgrade, the goal shots proved to align much better realistically as the Buzzards outshot the Bandits 38-33 in defeat. Charlotte slides this week despite “upgrading” to goalie Tristan Jarry, who had a better statistical real season than Carey Price. But Price has clearly outplayed Jarry thus far in MWHL play. Additionally, the third goalie in the Charlotte triumvirate, Jake Allen, has yet to play. It could be a hot hand revolving door situation all season.
Portland Storm
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Portland is looking for the first win of the season after starting 0-2-2 against Gilbert and Bathgate

——————————————————————————

Gilbert Sharks @ Portland Storm Portland is still looking for their first home win as Gilbert comes into town and wins 4-1. Fox (2) and Makar (2) both net goals in the first period before Portland finally gets a goal at the 16:51 mark from Granlund to fall behind 2-1. Makar notches his second goal of the game in the 2nd period and Hedman tallies the final one in the third to complete the win

Despite losing 4-1 Portland outshoots Gilbert 36-22

Star #1 – Makar 2 goals, 3 points
Star #2 – Rasak 35 saves
Star #3 – Hedman 1 goal
———————————————————————-

Bathgate Rangers @  Portland Storm DeAngelo (2) opens the scoring for Bathgate at the 5:32 mark of the first period but Portland responds nearly 9 minutes later with a goal from Olofsson (3). The second period was scoreless and Portland got the crowd excited thinking they might earn their first win of the season when Olofsson (4) found the back of the net 7:05 into the 3rd period. Bathgate responded with two goals from Zibanejad (5) and Giroux (2) within 45 seconds to steal the win

Star #1 -Olofsson goals
Star #2-Giroux 1 goal, 2 points
Star #3 -Zibanejad 1 goal

———————————————

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland loses both games at home to start 0-3-1
