Bathgate Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers have 3 road games this week, and then they host Portland….

Portland Storm
@
Bathgate Rangers
Rangers have been strong lately and hope the break hasn’t stopped their momentum. However, early indications have the home town fans wondering as Olofsson scores for Portland in the opening 5 minutes. But 5 minutes later, he’s sent to the sin bin for hooking and Nugent-Hopkins gest the PP goal to tie it up. But Brown beats Georgiev a minute later and the Storm regain the lead. However, from that point on, it’s all Rangers. ZBad scores in the 1st to tie it up and then Bathgate gets 3 2nd period goals and Georgiev fends off all the rest of the shots Portland throws at him and the Rangers win 5-2.
STARS (all BGR)
1. Nugent-Hopkins 1 goal, 1 assist
2. Hertl 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Giroux 1 goal

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1 home game and the Rangers continue their hot streak…..hope the road is good, but competition this week is going to be tough!!

WEEKLY PREVIEW: LA with a single home game this week, after a four game road trip the last week before break. LA went 0-4 on that road trip in week 10 and limped into the break with a 1-7 record the last 2 weeks.

LA starts the new calendar year without Teuvo Teravainen, traded to Cincinnati. Teuvo will be missed now and in the future, but time to rebuild/reload.

Thunder Bay NorWesters
@
LA Great Danes
Newcomers Merzlikins, Boeser, and Schwartz in the lineup, along with Adam Pelech getting his first action of the season.

A rude welcome for Elvis as he gives up a quick goal to Reilly Smith 1:36 into the game, but the Danes get goals from Voracek and Chiarot for a 2-1 lead after one.

And breaking news 12 seconds into period 2 – a goal by Alex Pietrangelo!!! Goal #1 on the season for Alex – 40 games and 126 SOG into the season – thought it may never happen.

Martin Necas brings Thunder Bay within a goal in the second, and it’s 3-2 LA after two.

It’s Blues night in the third period. First, Ryan O’Reilly ties the game at 3 1:17 into the 3rd. LA then gets goals from Jaden Schwartz and Brayden Schenn to take a 5-3 lead. A Colton Parayko shot is deflected by Reilly Smith with 4:20 left to make it 5-4, and LA holds off Thunder Bay the rest of the way, and Elvis is a winner in his LA debut.

Reilly Smith takes the #1 star with 2 goals for Thunder Bay. Alex Pietrangelo is the #2 star with 1G-1A, and Aleksander Barkov is the 3rd star with 3 assists on the night for LA.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: LA goes 3-1 versus Thunder Bay this season, scoring 5 goals in all 4 of the games.

WEEKLY PREVIEW: Gilbert has 2 home games versus Brentwood and Bucks County

Brentwood Bandits
@
Gilbert Sharks
Jake Debrusk opens the scoring midway through the 1st period to give Brentwood a 1-0 lead. It would hold until midway through the 2nd when Zucker finally gets one through to tie the game. Charlie Coyle stars in the 3rd period for Gilbert getting one goal early and one goal late to give Gilbert a 2 goal lead. MacKinnon adds an empty net goal to get the 4-1 win for Gilbert.

Bucks County Raccoons
@
Gilbert Sharks
Meier opens the scoring for BC but goals from Kubalik and Tkachuck put Gilbert up in the 2nd period. A goal from Virtanen and 2 goals from Wilson would put BC back in charge before the end of the 2nd. The 2 goal lead would last until about 7 minutes left in the game when Gilbert explodes with goals from Tkachuck, Kubalik, and Danault to take the lead. Bucks County is not to be denied though as Vertanin scores twice in the final 3 minutes to complete the hat trick and give BC a 6-5 win.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A tough loss versus Bucks county but a home split over two good hockey teams is not bad.
Alamo Defenders
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Alamo hosts Bucks County and Thunder Bay this week.

Bucks County Raccoons

Alamo Defenders

Cincinnati Inferno
ALAMO 3, CINCINNATI 2

Vinnie Hinostroza’s goal at 6:12 of the third period broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Defenders to the win. The Inferno held a 29-9 shots on goal advantage, but lost the game.

Robin Lehner collected the win by stopping 27 shots and Connor Hellebuyck turned away six shots. Ironically, all five goals were scored at even strength, as Alamo had four chances and Cincinnati had three.

Bathgate Rangers
@
Cincinnati Inferno
CINCINNATI 3, BATHGATE 2

Jake Gunetzel’s goal at 1:58 of the third period closed out the scoring and broke a 2-2 tie. In a contest that was eerily similar to the game with Alamo — neither team had a man-advantage goal, as the visitors had four chances and the Inferno had three.

The shots were more balanced, as Bathgate had a 25-22 edge. Connor Hellebuyck picked up the win with 23 saves and James Reimer blocked 19 in defeat.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: After a big trade over the holidays, it was a split for the week between the home and away games. Cincinnati got scalps from Bathgate and at Chicago and was handed defeats from Alamo and at New Jersey.

The power play, which has been problematic this year (16.8% – 12th in MWHL) is not improving and the penalty kill (81.3% – 6th in MWHL) is starting to move in the right direction.

Portland Storm
WEEKLY PREVIEW: After an extended holiday break the Portland Storm (6-26-6) play host to the Toledo Walleye (15-19-4), LA Great Danes (13-24) and the Jagr Mullets (26-6-7)

Toledo Walleye
@
Portland Storm
Portland opens 2021 with renewed energy as they get a goal from Graves (2) in the first period but Toledo responds in the second with goals from Trocheck (9), Nosek (7), and Backstrom (4) to take a 3-1 lead after two periods. Showing grit and energy Portland probably plays their best period of the season so far in the third as Zucarrello (8), Granlund (6) and Hall (8) all find the back of the net to lead Portland to a 4-3 win

LA Great Danes
@
Portland Storm
With an uplifting win against Toledo two days prior Portland looked to keep the momentum and got a first period goal from Rakell (6) to take a 1-0 lead after the first period. Things were looking good but LA got goals from Barkov (15), Ehlers (13) and Tierney (4) in the second period and another goal from Barkov in the fourth to win going away 4-1

Jagr Mullets
@
Portland Storm
Yhe divison leading Jarg Mullets travel to Portland and showed why they are the class of the division getting goals from Ovechkin (21) and Bergeron (30,31) while their defense shits down Portland in a 3-0 shutout win. Markstrom gets 38 saves in the win

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Portland stats off 021 with a win but proceeds to lose their next two as the tough season continues
Brentwood Bandits
WEEKLY PREVIEW: This is the week that helps us decide if we are contenders or pretenders. Only one home game, and 3 on the road.

Chicago Cosa Nostra
@
Brentwood Bandits
The Cosa Nostra comes to town to make Brentwood an offer they can’t refuse…

Kreider (8) starts things off for Chicago. 1-0.

Bandits tie it 1-1 when Debrusk (19) continues to be one of the lone bright spots.

2nd period sees Horvat (6) give the Bandits a 2-1 lead.

3rd period was crazy!

Tavares (12) gives the Bandits a “comfortable” 3-1 lead. You would think Vasilevskiy could hold on to that one?

Well…

At 14:15 Pastrnak (34) takes full advantage of the Boston advantage to make it 3-2.

Time winding down… 18:15 Kopitar (13) ties it 3-3 with 1:45 left to play!

Time further winding down… 19:30 Horvat (7) puts the Bandits ahead with 30 seconds left! 4-3!!

TEN. SECONDS. LATER… Theodore (2) sneaks one through traffic and past Vasilevskiy to tie it 4-4!!

The Bandits, and their crowd are stunned.

Somehow we managed to stop Chicago from scoring in the final 20 seconds… (eye roll)

Head to OT where, of course, Kopitar (14) scores with 35 seconds left to give Chicago the win and sending Brentwood to the locker room where they all look to see if their bags are packed for a trade.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: I’m calling it… Time of Death for the Bandits 2020-21 season is 9:30AM, on Tuesday January 12, 2021.

I know I was wishy washy before about whether or not I wanted to trade to compete or trade for the future… well, almost everyone is available now.

Bon Appetit.

Charlotte Buzzards
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Buzzards needed home relief after a rough patch on the schedule in which it lost three games on the road this latest week, as per reports. But the going wouldn’t be easy in its lone home contest of the week, against Pacific-leading Alamo.

Alamo Defenders
@
Charlotte Buzzards
The Buzzards, so often on the wrong side of these last minute third period losses the game engine is famous for, finally found some comeback glory: Following Anders’ Lee’s game-tying goal with 13 seconds left in regulation, Charlotte kept charging seconds into overtime and got the game-winner from Alex Killorn 44 seconds into the extra period to upset the Defenders, 5-4.

Lee finished with two goals, both which came in the third period. His buzzer-beating unassisted game-tying goal came as Carey Price had left the nets. Earlier, Charlotte overcame a 3-1 deficit, a lead built on Alamo goals from Jesper Bratt and from a pair of defensemen, Damon Severson and Jakob Chychrun.

Three stars: All from Charlotte
Star 1: Lee, 2 G 3 points
Star 2: Mitch Marner 1 G 3 points
Star 3: Killorn GWG

Notables: Robin Lehner recorded 41 saves for the Defenders and Stamkos won 17 Alamo faceoffs. Drake Caggiula accounted for Alamo’s lone third period goal that put the Defenders ahead at the time 4-3. Bryan Rust accounted for the other Charlotte goal in the contest.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte stops the bleeding caused by a rough patch on the road (three losses) and gets a much needed home win against a playoff-bound squad.
Bucks County Raccoons
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Bucks County comes out of the Christmas break hosting struggling LA followed by league leading Jagr

LA Great Danes
@
Bucks County Raccoons
Bucks County comes out of the gate quickly charging to a 2-0 lead on goals by Johsnaen (3) and Kane (21), but LA ties the score late in the 1st on goals by Nylander (11) and very early in the 2nd from Heiskanen (5) to tie the score at 2. BCR retakes the lead on a PP goal from Virtanen (13) at 4:42 but LA answers with a PP goal of their own at 5:21 from Ehlers (13) to tie it at 3. It looks like this might be head to OT when Oshie (17) scores with a 1:35 left in regulation go put the Racs in front. From that point on the puck never left the LA offensive zone as the Great Danes fired 11 shots at the net only to come up empty and BCR wins the game 4-3.

Jagr Mullets
@
Bucks County Raccoons
Tops in the league in points Jagr comes to BC and looks to set the tone early. Two goals by Ovechkin (21 and 22) and a goal by Miller (16) gave the Mullets a 3-0 lead after two periods. During the intermission Timo Meier had an IV of Wheaties and came out in the 3rd scoring a quick goal (13) and then assisted on goals by Wilson (12) before 5 minutes had elapses. It looked like Jagr might salt the game away but Mr Meier had other ideas, assisting on a goal by Hyman (7) with 4:05 left in regulation. That left it to Oshie to do his thing, and for the second straight home game he did, scoring with 1:19 left (his 18th) and giving the Raccoons a 4-3 lead. This time BCR got the puck out of the Jagr offensive twice and held on behind Ben Bishop for an improbable come back and a thrilling 4-3 victory.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Two home games, 4 points and one of the most thrilling come backs in Bucks County history against Jagr. Not bad, not bad at all…..
Toledo Walleye
WEEKLY PREVIEW: New Jersey and Gilbert come to Toledo as the Walleye try to climb out of the division cellar.

New Jersey Black Aces
@
Toledo Walleye
Walleye 6, Black Aces 2 – The Walleye take full control of the 1st period, estabishing a 16-7 SOG advantage, and getting goals from Laughton, Trocheck on the powerplay, and a rare shortie when Lindell got a steal and breakaway during a PK. 1st period ends 3-0 Walleye.

2nd period sees the fortunes flip for about 10 minutes, as New Jersey controls play and gets a goal from Heinen, and powerplay goal from Pulock, cutting the lead to 1, 3-2. 2nd half of the period sees the Walleye 3rd line come to life and score 2 EV goals, as van Riemsdyk and Laughton light the lamp.

As the 3rd period opens, we see who is going to take charge. Thanks to an early penalty on Krejci, its Trocheck on the powerplay, making it 6-2 with 16 minutes to go. After that, a lot of skating, but no more goals.

1st star – Laughton 2G
2nd – Trocheck 2G
3rd – van Riemsdyk 1G 3pts

Gilbert Sharks
@
Toledo Walleye
Toledo 3, Gilbert 2 – The 3rd line continues its resurgence for the Walleye, scoring the first goal, Laughton, just 2 minutes into the game. Toledo then goes on a penalty spree, committing 3 minors in 8 minutes, and they pay for the carelessness when the Sharks capitalize on a winded PK unit, and MacKinnon ties it at 1 with 8 minutes left in the first. After that, its Gilbert with 2 penalties, and they spend a majority of the remainder of the 1st period on the kill, but are more successful, allowing nothing. The period ends 1-1.

2nd period sees Gilbert commit 2 more penalties, and the 2nd one does them in just past the halfway point, with Barrie getting a short range shot in the net, and the home team is back up 2-1. Toledo continues to dominate play, ending with a 14-5 SOG advantage, but no more goals, and we go on 2-1 Toledo.

Toledo goes back on the penalty binge. Killing one off, then scoring a goal, Trocheck from in close, to make it 3-1. 2 penalties later, right at 10 minutes to go, the Sharks make them pay, and Hedman makes it interesting with his 4 goal of the season. After that, the Sharks hurt themselves with a couple of penalties, but kill both off. In spite of that they get 22 SOG in the period, but Binnington plays stellar goal, and makes the one goal advantage stand to the end, earning a well deserved pat on the back.

1st star – Hedman 1G 2pts
2nd – Binnington 34 saves
3rd – Barrie 1G

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Surprisingly good homestand this week with 2 wins, and 4 goals from the 3rd line. If that continues, we may be able to make some noise.
