Bathgate Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Rangers have a tough week – all in division but two of them are against Jagr. And we only have 1 home game and it’s hosting Jagr. Rangers are quietly, but actively, seeking to challenge the Mullets (at least to a hair cut) – and at the same time stay ahead of Brentwood. Seems like the Bandits are helping the Rangers accomplish that task trading them Tavares this past week – let’s see what he did in his first Rangers home game….

Jagr Mullets
@
Bathgate Rangers
Well Tavares didn’t waste too much time at home, scoring the first goal in this game 7 minutes after the first puck dropped. Then in a 1st period that saw 6 goals, the Rangers grabbed a 4-2 lead. Giroux put one in 25 seconds after Tavares – then Matthews scored 16 seconds later for Jagr so it’s 2-1 Bathgate 8 minutes into the game. Then it happens agains with Vrana scoring with 8 to go and Sanheim following 12 seconds later. Bergeron scores for Jagr before the period ends.

After that, Halak and the Rangers defense takes over. Jagr comes out hell bent for leather and fires 18 shots on Halak in the 2nd, but he stops them all. They manage 6 shots in the 3rd. ZBad and Nugent-Hopkins tally in the 2nd and the final is 6-2 Rangers!
STARS (all BGR)
1. Vrana 1 goal, 2 assists
2. Nugent-Hopkins 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Halak 35 saves

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 1 home game and it’s a big win over Jagr and Tavares plays role right away. Hope the road goes as well, but who knows…..And former 1st round pick, Nico Hischier, plays in his last home game for the Rangers as he’s headed to LA to be a Great Dane!

Elvis Merzlikins is sitting out the week as the team has made him available via trade. Jaden Schwartz, traded to the Rangers earlier this week, will play on the road but sits out the home game, with Filip Chytl making his season debut as the Danes await the arrival of Nico Hischier from the Rangers.

California Regulators

LA Great Danes
California comes east to LA as the Pacific division leaders. LA scores first, but California scores the next 2 to lead 2-1 halfway through the game. But the Danes score 3 straight in the 2nd half of the 2nd period to lead 4-2 after 2 periods. It was a wide open 2nd period – shots were basically even at 16-17, but LA had an impressive 16-3 scoring chance advantage in the period.

LA takes the 4-2 lead into the third, but Sam Reinhart puts 2 past Varlamov to tie the score. Less than a minute after Reinhart tied the game, William Nylander nets his 2nd of the game and 20th goal of the season. Two minutes later, Adam Henrique scores his 2nd of the game and chases Grubauer from the Cal net with 7 minutes left and the Danes restore the 2 goal lead at 6-4.

California pulls their goalie for the extra attacker, and after diving to block a shot in his own zone, William Nylander scores the empty net goal for the hat trick, and the Great Danes are great in this one with a 7-4 win.

Nylander 3G-1A, Henrique 2G, and Voracek 1G-2A are the 3 stars, all from LA. There were 7 Danes with multiple points in the game.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: After a tough start to the season, William Nylander has been red hot of late. Counting this week’s hat trick, he has 9 goals in the past 10 games. Early on this season, he had an abundance of scoring chances but could not find the back of the net. He leads the team by a wide margin with 187 scoring chances on the season, but now the goals are going in.

Mark Scheifele has also been heating up of late with a goal this week, his 20th of the season, after 4 goals last week.

Brentwood Bandits
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Two home games after trading away Captain John Tavares for promising youngster Dylan Strome. This move allows the Bandits team to elect born leader Bo Horvat as the new Captain.

The first game sees Tavares come to town with his new team, Bathgate. Let’s see how that goes!

The second game is New Jersey making their way to Brentwood.

Brentwood Bandits
Bathgate and Brentwood have a strange rivalry… not many rivals make trades between the two teams, but Bathgate and Brentwood apparently do!

Bathgate’s acquisition of Tavares is a step in their quest to challenge league elite Jagr. Let’s see how Tavares helps out!

1st period – 24 seconds in, Konecny (12) from Josi (34) makes it 1-0.

Foegele (3) from Josi (35) and Martinez (7) makes it 2-0

42 seconds later, DeAngelo (12) from Zibanejad (25) and Tatar (43) puts Bathgate on the board. 2-1 Bandits lead.

2nd period – this time only 14 seconds in, Horvat (13) embraces his new captaincy and leads by example. It’s assiste by Josi (36) with his 3rd assist on the day, and Konecny (33).

3:21 – on the Power Play… welcome to Brentwood Mr. Strome! He scores against his former team (7) to make it 4-1 Bandits!

Eller with the 5 minute major cross-checking, gives Bathgate a full 5 minutes, and they make the best of it with Nugent-Hopkins (17) and Provorov (9) each scoring. Bringing us to a 4-3 Bandits lead.

3rd period – despite being up by a goal, the Bandits continue to pressure and out-shoot the Rangers 14-8, which doesn’t lead to any more goals… by either team as Nilsson shuts the door for his 9th win of the season in relief of Vasilevskiy.

NJ is in the house! The Black Aces pull into Brentwood having already beat them on the road this week. Let’s see how the Bandits react.

No scoring in the first period. Bandits get 8 SOG while New Jersey only manages 4.

2nd period – 2:45 in, Stralman (5) scores from the point to make it 1-0.

Pearson (9) puts the Bandits up 2-0

We go to the 3rd period…

1:10 into the period, Thomas (5) gets the Black Aces on the board. 2-1 Bandits

15:37 mark sees Horvat (14) put the Bandits up 3-1

NJ pulls Hart to try to get something going, but at 19:46 Captain Bo Horvat scores the empty netter, and goal #15 on the season. He has scored 3 goals in 2 games at home since the Tavares trade, where he moved up to the 1st line.

Final 4-1 Bandits win.

STARS

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Trading Tavares away was a move that would have appeared to be the Bandits building for the future, but the team hasn’t stopped competing. Let’s see if the boost lasts, or will it die down?

Horvat is enjoying his new captaincy with 3 goals and a whole bunch of faceoffs won on the top line. He seems right at home with Konecny. Let’s see if Debrusk continues his strong season without Tavares feeding him the puck.

Mackinnon puts Gilbert on the board just 51 seconds into the game but it is Alamo who leaves the first period with the lead after goals from Khaira and Draisaitl. Gilbert makes the comeback late in the 2nd period with goals from Danault and Thornton just 18 seconds apart to take a 3-2 lead. One minute into the 3rd Crosby would tie it up for Alamo. Midway through the 3rd Period, Charlie Coyle scores the go-ahead goal for Gilbert. Hedman adds an empty netter with a little more than a minute left but it wasnt quite over as Draisaitl gets his 2nd with 35 seconds left. Gilbert hangs on from there though and gets a big win.

Yellowknife Braves
@
Bucks County Raccoons
The visitors from Yellowknife took advantage of some poor discipline from BCR as they scored twice on a 4 minute PP due to Hyman high sticking penalty, and then scored a 3rd time just as a Hayes holding penalty expired late in the 1st period for a 3-0 lead. But nobody circles the wagons like the Bucks County Raccoons. The Racs scored twice to cut the lead to 3-2, but then Aho scored on a breakaway to give the Braves a 4-2 cushion. From then on it was Katie bar the door, as BCR could do no wrong, scoring the next 4 goals in the game to come away with a 6-4 victory.

Chicago Cosa Nostra
@
Bucks County Raccoons
Just as in the previous game, BCR found themselves down 2 goals, even though they drew first blood with a Kane goal midway through the 1st period. Chicago then scored the next 3 to take a 3-1 lead, two of the tallies coming of the stick of Pastrnak. Staring at another 2 goal deficit similar to the first game on this home stand, BCR responded with 2 goals to tie it early in the 3rd period. Pastrnak scored for the 3rd time in the game (12 SOG for the game) to give CHI a 4-3 lead at the halfway mark of the 3rd, but as before, BCR responded, getting the game tying goal from from Wilson at 14:17 and then the eventual game winner from Virtanen at 18:41 to come away with the 5-4 win.

Toledo Walleye

Bucks County Raccoons
Bucks County has had a tough time with Toledo so far this year, and this game proved no different as the Walleye defeated the Raccoons by a score of 5-1. BCR scored first and held that lead until the middle of the 2nd period, but then the dam broke and Toledo rolled to the victory, the tide changing when Pettersen scored twice within 13 seconds late in the 2nd period.

Thunder Bay NorWesters
@
Charlotte Buzzards
A NorWesters squad striving to stay alive in a competitive east playoff picture, shut out the Buzzards, 2-0, to secure a much-needed lifeline. Mikko Koskinen saved 29 shots for Thunder Bay and the NorWesters got the only goal it would need from Sean Couturier 15 minutes into the contest, assisted by Quinn Hughes and Jeff Petry. In a goalie dual between Koskinen and Carey Price, Thunder Bay grabbed a helpful insurance goal five minutes into the third period, off the stick of Martin Necas, who was assisted by fellow third-liner Tyler Bertuzzi.

Three stars (all from Thunder Bay):
Star 1: Koskinen 29 saves
Star 2: Necas 1 G
Star 3: Couturier 1 G

Notable: Charlotte outshoots Thunder Bay 29-27 in defeat. Dylan Larkin notches 15 faceoff wins for Charlotte. Price makes 25 saves as the hard-luck loser (.926 save percentage).

Portland Storm

Charlotte Buzzards
For the second straight home game, the Charlotte Buzzards are buzz-sawed by a hot-handed goalie who captures first-star honors: This time, it is Braden Holtby who turns in one of the best MWHL goalie performance of the season, stopping all 47 Charlotte shots to lead the Storm to an upset 3-0 win.

Following a Connor Brown even-strength goal exactly 11 minutes into the contest, both goalies, Holtby and Carey Price, dueled it out until back to back unassisted goals midway through the third period by Portland’s Mats Zuccarello and Victor Oloffson put the game on ice. Olofsson’s goal came on the power play following a Tyler Myers holding penalty.

Holtby saved 18 shots in the first period and shut down a relentless Charlotte barrage throughout the contest.

Star 1: Holtby
Star 2: Olofsson
Star 3: Zuccarello

Notable: Charlotte outshot Portland 47-23.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: In two home losses, the Buzzards’ goals matched the number of Super Bowl touchdowns scored by the Kansas City Chiefs: nada. Suffice to say it was not a great week for either of us.
Toledo Walleye
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Just one home game in Toledo this week. Division leading Bucks County in town. Toledo now making a go of it without Kucherov, but looking forward to seeing what Duncan Keith can bring.

Toledo Walleye
Raccoons 5, Walleye 2 – The visitors jump on top real early when Suzuki capitalizes on a powerplay, quickly followed by an even strength goal by Wilson. 2-0 with 13 minutes to go. Both defenses settle down and the period ends with no more damage.

Toledo finally gets on the board when Arvidsson scores in the 2nd minute of the middle period. Enthusiasm is short lived as Kane answers for the Raccoons, and its 3-1. Toledo cuts the lead to 1 after a penalty by Kane gives the Walleye the advantage, and Bailey scores. 3 minutes later its old party pooper Kane again. Period ends 4-2.

3rd period McDavid piles on early with a goal to make it 5-2. And thats it for the scoring as defense rules the rest of the way.

1st star – Kane 2G 3pts
2nd – McDavid 1G 4pts
3rd – Khudobin 47 saves

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Dominating effort by the Raccoons support their case for the Division lead. Toledo is where they belong in the cellar.
