| WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Big week for the Metropolitan division (and probably all the others) as we get lots of head-to-head playoff type games. The Rangers only get 1 at home and it’s hosting Jagr!!! |
| GAME #1: JAGR MULLETS@ BATHGATE RANGERS | Whew – 79 total SOGs and 130 total. 2/3 of the Rangers 45 shots were on goal! Only 58% of the Mullets shots made it to Nedljkovic – but when you shoot 85 times, that means 45 were on goal. Talk about goalie abuse. The game was pretty clean, Jagr got 3 PP attempts, the Rangers got 2.And the 1st goal was a PP goal by Zibanejad 15 minutes into the game giving the home crowd some Oohh moments! But with 18 seconds left in the period Joseph netted one to tie the game. BooBut those last minute heroics occurred again as the 2nd period drew to a close as ZBad scores his 2nd goal with 27 seconds left and the Rangers grab a 2-1 lead as they skate to the 2nd intermission.The Mullets have been consistent in there attacks – 13 SOGs in both the 1st and 2nd periods, but boy did they turn in up for period 3. 23 shots got through to Nedeljkovic – 23!! But as the final minute approached it was still 2-1 Bathgate. That’s when Markstrom left the ice and Jagr turned up the attack (if that’s possible). And with 54 seconds left – GOAL! But it was Panarin with the EN goal to make it 3-1 and Nedeljkovic stopped the rest, 48 SAVES! STARS (all BGR) |

| GAME #1: BATHGATE RANGERS@ BRENTWOOD BANDITS | Big game up first!
Bathgate comes to town with new blood in Pastrnak and Nedeljkovic (I see my mid season article helped our divisional rival by saying they need a goalie… awesome LOL). Vasilevskiy against Nedeljkovic. Should be a good goaltending matchup, right? Ummm… Horvat starts the scoring off with his 16th of the season to make it 1-0. Oshie (34) scores his first goal as a Bandit on the PP to make it 2-0! Kopitar (11) and Kessel (16) score 28 seconds apart to make it 4-0 Bandits!! And before the period ends, Bellemare (4) also scores in his Bandits debut to make it shocking lead at the end of one period, 5-0 Bandits! In the period, the Rangers only had ONE scoring chance. The Rangers look utterly shocked as they leave the ice and head to the locker room. Can they come out and put a dent in the Bandits lead? Halak is in net for the Rangers to start the 2nd period. Nedeljkovic is on the bench wearing the baseball cap as he gave up 5 goals on 15 shots. Bathgate comes out and plays harder, but Vasilevskiy meets the challenge with every shot. Then at 13:01 of the 2nd period, Jake “The Snake” Guentzel (23) makes it 6-0!! We go to the third period. Bathgate has checked out of this game early as they only manage 6 shots as Brentwood gets 13 shots in the 3rd and adds goals by Martinez (11) and Kessel with his 2nd of the game (17). And this one ends with a shocking score of 8-0!! Stars (all Bandits) So new Bandits Oshie, Bellemare, and Doughty all make an impact (Doughty had 4 hits, 2 blocks, and a Plus 4). Sorry Bill… don’t take it personally! 🙂 |
| GAME #2: PITTSBURGH MINERS@ BRENTWOOD BANDITS | And just as the Bandits roll over the Rangers, last place Pittsburgh crosses the town and heads south to Brentwood.
Quite a few Bandit “injuries” in this one. Sitting out are regular starters Aston-Reese, Eller, Sprong, and Chiarot. Let’s see if this influences the outcome of the game? Brossoit is in net for the Bandits and Bobrovsky for the Miners A tale of two games as this one was nothing like the game against the Rangers. Martinez (12) makes it 1-0 Bandits. Beauvillier (10) ties it up on the PP 1-1. Head to the 2nd… The Big Pavelski (35) makes it 2-1 Bandits! Laine (6) ties it up 2-2!! No scoring in the 3rd and we head to OT! At the 2:02 mark of OT, Beauvillier (11) is the hero that upsets the Bandits as Pittsburgh wins against their cross town and divisional rival, Brentwood Bandits. Teams were tied 32 SOG a piece, but the Bandits lead in every category except Power Play because we had NONE. Miners were 1-4 on the PP The Stars: 1 Beauvillier 2G |
| WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Yes, it was the tale of two games!
1st game Brentwood stuns and puts a hurting on Bathgate, and then in the 2nd game, the Pittsburgh Miners come in and update the Bandits on home ice. I guess 3 out of 4 points ain’t bad… but if we’re gonna play like we did against a great Bathgate team, we need to play better against a lesser talented team such as the Miners. Can’t use the excuse of sitting players… still need to find a way to win. Coach Tom Atkins “Taking nights off can’t happen come playoff time.” We agree coach. |

| WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Only home game of the week is a big one versus California, with a road game versus them as well as they are in a tight race for first place in the Pacific Division. |
| GAME #1: CALIFORNIA REGULATORS@ LA GREAT DANES | The Great Danes dominate early with the first 8 scoring chances of the game. But when things don’t go their way, the Danes put their tails between their legs and disappear for the rest of the game.
California wins going away 4-0. PPG’s in periods 1 and 2 put them up 2-0 after 2, and Sam Reinhart scores a pair in the third. Grubauer with 32 saves, Reinhart with the 2 goals, and Patrick Kane with 3 assists are the stars of the game. Another shoddy effort in net from Varlamov with 4 GA and only 17 saves. And a poor effort from the entire team. Two delay of game penalties and a high sticking double minor showed the lack of focus and discipline in this one. |

| GAME #2: BRENTWOOD BANDITS@ JAGR MULLETS | Three big momentum swings in this one. First, the Mullets pump a pair of goals behind Vasy to take a 2-0 lead 11 minutes in. Then Brentwood scores 3 unanswered goals in the 1st and 2nd to take a 3-2 lead. But Auston Matthews scores his 40th at 3:28 of the 3rd to tie it, and rookie sensation Kiril the Thrill scores his 27th of the year to seal the 4-3 victory.

| WEEKLY PREVIEW: | The Charlotte Buzzards are putting their best foot forward as the second half of the season progresses and if the season were to end today, the club would attain a second straight winning season but with no playoffs to show for it (oh well at least the foundation seems to be put in place for success now and into the future). The squad hosted division foes Thunder Bay and Portland this week. |
| GAME #1: THUNDER BAY NORWESTERS@ CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS | Charlotte’s top two leaders stepped up to the surface in a 4-3 overtime win over Thunder Bay: Brad Marchand (two goals) and Carter Verhaeghe (one goal), each scored in regulation then both slipped the shootout goals past Jonathan Bernier that gave them the 2-0 edge over the Nor’westers for the extra point.
After two first period goals by Marchand, the Nor’westers rallied on goals by three forwards whose last names begin with a C (J.T. Compher, Kyle Connor and Sean Couturier). Thunder Bay held a 3-2 lead for most of the third period after Couturier’s even strength goal 2:40 into the third, but Verhaeghe scored in dramatic fashion with 50 seconds to play in the period. Charlotte goalie Chris Driedger stopped Connor and Gabriel Landeskog shootout efforts in the overtime period, after both teams failed to score during the five minutes of play, and he saved 27 for the win. | GAME #2: PORTLAND STORM@ CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS | In a last minute move, the Buzzards dusted off Ilya Sorokin who had seen little action as the new year began, over Jake Allen who had started to struggle as of late. Sorokin paid dividends by saving 30 shots and earning first-star honors in a rare blanking, a 5-0 shutout over the Portland Storm.
The Buzzards were doubled in shots by Portland but a third of their 15 shots found their way into the net, as Jordan Binnington struggled in nets for the Storm and saved just 10. Mikael Backlund’s shorthanded goal 13 minutes into the game proved to be the turning point and it gave Charlotte the only goal it really needed. Defenseman Brendan Dillon, along with forwards Carter Verhaeghe, Bryan Rust and Mitch Marner also registered goals and the Buzzards seized a 3-0 lead after the first period. Portland’s attack was steady as it fired a minimum of nine goals during each period but Sorokin was equal to the task. Three stars (all Charlotte): |

| GAME #1: BUCKS COUNTY RACCOONS@ TOLEDO WALLEYE | An early Kane roughing penalty leads to a goal from van Riemsdyk just 3 minutes into the game. Near the midway point of the period, Cernak scores a rare goal on a zone entry play. And when Suzuki gets called for boarding, its Saad who finds an opening close in to make it 3-0. To add insult, Hoffman parks in front of the net and a nifty shot from Barrie he deflects in to make it 4-0 at the first break.
Another penalty, this time by Chara, opens up the 2nd period, and the Moose jump all over it, with Trocheck getting the goal this time. At that point, the guys seem kinda like, lets go to the bar and get a few adult beverages, so pretty much nothing else happens the rest of the game, except a couple more penalties, one for each team. | GAME #1: BUCKS COUNTY RACCOONS@ CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA | Chicago with one goal early in the 1st period from Palat, and another early 2nd period goal from DeBrincat for a 2-0 lead. The Raccoons respond late in the 2nd (McDavid) and early in the 3rd (Wilson) to tie the game at 2 with 17 minutes to go. Chicago rebounds with goals from De brincat and Kyrou to make it 4-2 with 4 minutes to go. A late goal from McDavid makes it close, but they run out of time and Chicago wins 4-3

| GAME #2: TOLEDO WALLEYE@ CHICAGO COSA NOSTRA | Saros in goal is perfect and holds the Walleye scoreless in an awesome effort, as Toledo throws 45 shots on goal. And in a very efficient manner the Cosa Nostra score 3 goals on just 14 shots. Palat, Theodore, and Kyrou, with Theodore a shorty.

| GAME #2: LA GREAT DANES@ GILBERT SHARKS | LA jumps out to the lead midway through the 1st period when Brodin scores but Zuccarello scores early in the 2nd to tie it up. Kiviranta scores later in the 2nd period but Nurse quickly evens the score again. It would remain tied all the way through regulation and we go to Overtime. 3 minutes in to Overtime, Erik Haula is the hero for Gilbert and gives them the 3-2 win. |
