Chicago Cosa Nostra
Weekly Preview:
Chicago hosts Hampton in what is quickly developing as a bloody rivalry.
The Cosa Nostra came out flying with four shots in the first two minutes and it was Larkin that came through finding the twine with his 10th of the season beating poor sadsack Linus Ullmark for an early 1-0.  The teams basically pounded each other between the blue lines for the next 10 minutes with virtually nothing being called until Pastrnak was finally given 2 minutes for a blatant trip of Alex Killorn. The hauldown resulted in a evening of the score with Jeff Petry sneaking in from the
right point on the advice of his astrologer and rifling a loose puck over the shoulder of Mr. Mrazek.
Jason Demers opened the 2nd period 14 seconds in with a weak slapper from the point that couldn’t have broken a pane of glass, but somehow eluded Mrazek to give the Hampton Defencemen a 2-1 edge over Chicago.
Filip Forsberg finally began getting the ice time he deserves made it 3-1 with a wrist shot on the power play while Niklas Kronwall was mulling over the meaning of life after getting called for a bear hug on Patric Hornqvist.
Islanders winger and otherwise sneaky little shit Shane Prince brought Chicago within a goal on a flooper from the point the drifted peacefully off Ullmark’s blocker and into the net at the midway point of the 2nd period.
The 3rd period opened with a flurry that was all Hampton and they did find the net but only once on 19 shots in the period with Demers once again getting the tally.
Realworld prodigy (but he’s still a stinking, ratpuke Bruin) David Pastrnak countered for Chicago on a giveaway in Hampton’s own end for his 1st goal of the season to bring it to 4-3, but that was as close as they would get.
Paul Stastny got the podium as the 1st star in the game with his 32nd, 33rd, 34th and 35th assists of the season.  Nothing short of what you would expect between these two teams that really don’t like each other much. Very tame on the penalty minutes as the refs let them play (i.e., gut each other like a wharfload of Norwegian fisherman after a herring catch) and the teams bashed each other to a 27-27 hit count.
Game #2: Thunder Bay (2) at Chicago (1) — The arena was closed down when the bodies of long time missing teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa was found after a water main break cause the city of Chicago to dig up part of the Hockey team’s staff parking lot. The game was moved to the Thunderdome but Chicago was still the home team.

Copp opened the scoring with his 7th goal but Jordan Eberle kntted the game at 1-1 in the 1st period. Then this game became a defensive struggle. Both team clogged the neutral zone and the next 40 minutes or regulation passed without additional scoring. In Overtime (the 2nd straight game for Thunder Bay, Nestrasil scored just he 2nd of the season for the 2-1 win.

Game #3: New Jersey flies into Chicago looking to capture 2 points and continue their push towards the playoffs. Scott Stevens couldn’t ask for a better start. Leon Driasaitl nets his first for NJ and really started his new career with the Grizzlies. 1-0 NJ. Thru 1 period New Jersey was strong on the defensive side but and was able to really put pressure on Petr Mrazek. Grizzlies lead 1-0. Chris Krieder was able to get Chicago on the board in the second, 1-1 middel of 2. Kevin Shattenkirk who also just got into New Jersey netted his first and move NJ back in front 2-1. Looks like GM Jim Waldron’s moves are paying off earlier than expected. Though Costa Nostra was able to get on the board and out shoot NJ in period 2, the Griz still lead 2-1. In the third the puck bounced all over but it was Colton Parayko getting the score even again for the Cosa Nostra. Dylan Larkin gave Chicago the lead early in the 3rd with his 10th of the season. 3-2 Chicago. The game was a sesaw battle but Chicago wins it 3-2
Weekly Summary:
Chicago takes one of there three home games this series.

Minneapolis Deep Freeze
Weekly Preview:
Minneapolis gets their first home game after trading away star left winger Daniel Sedin in exchange for King Henrik.
Game #1: Hampton (2) @ Minneapolis (4)

Lundqvist is tired after making two road starts back to back earlier this week, so Neuvirth gets a start in this one against the high scoring Hampton Blizzard. It didn’t take long for the restructured Deep Freeze to open the scoring, as Eriksson (18) one-timed a shot from the slot off a beautiful setup from Datsyuk and Hoffman under 3 minutes in. Minneapolis would do try hard to squander the lead by getting 2 penalties only 20 seconds apart, but Neuvirth was up to the challenge and stopped all 5 shots he faced on the long 5-on-3. Hampton would get back to back penalties, giving Minneapolis effectively a 4 minute Powerplay, but Elliot stood tall to prevent them from extending the lead. Only 10 seconds after killing off the powerplay, Minneapolis gained control of the puck and Getzlaf set up Eriksson (19) in front for his 2nd of the game. 2-0 Minneapolis with 7:59 remaining in the first period. Ekblad would take a 5 minute major for checking from behind with 2:10 left in the 1st, giving Minneapolis an extended powerplay to end the period. Hampton held strong and killed off the first 2 minutes to enter the 1st intermission down 2-0.

Minneapolis would come out strong controlling the play to start the 2nd period, but it was Hampton who was able to capitalize. With Minneapolis still on the powerplay, Backlund (10) redirected a shot from Sekera to get the Blizzard on the board. 2-1 Minneapolis at 17:50 of the second period. Only 49 seconds later, just after the powerplay ended, Schmidt (3) fired a shot past Elliot to give Minneapolis a 3-1 lead. Both teams would generate a few chances during the rest of the period, but neither
would score again, and Minneapolis leads 3-1 at the end of the 2nd.

After a back-and-forth 10 minutes to begin the 3rd period, Ribeiro (7) ripped a slapshot past Neuvirth to bring the Blizzard back within 1. 3-2 Minneapolis with 9:59 to go. Once again, Minneapolis had an answer. Brassard backhanded a beauty past Elliot less than 3 minutes later to give Minneapolis the 2 goal lead again.

Game #1:
Long Beach (23-13-0-2) hosts Alamo (17-18-0-3). Alamo jumped out to the lead on a Marchand PP goal with 17:57 left in the 1st period. 37 seconds later Pearson scored to give Alamo a 2-0 lead. They went on to win 4-1 as Greiss made 30 saves.
Game #2:
Long Beach (23-14-0-2) hosts Scottsdale (17-19-0-2). Long Beach jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first on goals by Skinner, Bozak and Soderberg. They added goals in the third from Gallagher and Stamkos to make the final 5-2. The Long Beach fans were excited to see the new acquisitions (Skinner, Gallagher and Stamkos) give a boost to the offense.

Jagr Mullets
Weekly Preview:
It’s a bad week for Penguin goalies…
Game #1: In our first of two games this week, last place Scottsdale comes to town to face the first place Mullets. What could go wrong…?A lot.

Matt Murray gets SMOKED for 5 goals on the first 10 shots before he’s yanked in favor of Ben Bishop.

Jordan Staal scores in the 3rd to avoid the total embarrasment of a shutout; Jagr ultimately falls 6-1 as their new-look lineup clearly needs to build some chemistry.

Game #2: A battle of the brothers!

Brentwood comes to town in second place behind Jagr, and both teams were hyper-aggressive in their trading the past 2 weeks to make it a chase.

It’s a tightly contested game until Vern Fiddler opens the scoring late in the 1st to give Brentwood a 1-0 lead. But Jagr scores two early in the 2nd to take the lead… but that lasts all of 34 seconds as Phaneuf scores from the point to tie up the game.

Less than two minutes later, new acquisition Jussi Jokinen pots one to put the Mullets back up, and that score holds until #87 scores at 9:20 in the 3rd to tie up it 3-3.

But then Marc-Andre Fleury implodes, as Jagr racks up 3 unanswered goals by Kadri, Kessel, and Staal to take the game 6-3 and give Ben Bishop his 18th win on the season.

Thunder Bay Nor’Westers
Weekly Preview:
Home games with New Jersey and Indiana both key games in the division standings. We also play on the road in Chicago. If Thunder Bay has any hopes of making a play-off run these two division games will be key.
Game #1:
New Jersey (3) – Thunder Bay (4) in OT
Jersey jumps out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st period on goals by Laughton(3) and Arvidsson (12). O’Reilly closes the gap to 1 goal scoring the 2nd period’s only goal his 10th of the year. The 3rd period saw Tatar tie the game with his 9th of the season and then go ahead 3-2 when Coyle scored his 7th. Jersey’s big defenseman Byfuglein scored his 16th to close regulation at 3-3. In OT Thunder Bay’s Coyle scored his 2nd of the game and 8th of the season to take a slim 4-3 OT win.
Game #2:
Indiana (2) at Thunder Bay (3) in a Shoot Out.
Thunder Bay’s 3rd game of the week that goes to OT. Goals by Doughtey (13th), and Toews (9) for Indiana and Coyle (9th and 3rd of the week) and Saad his 16th of the season for the Nor’Westers.OT saw no scoring and we headed to the Shootout. Rnd 1 Toews and Saad both fail to score, Rnd 2 Bergeron fails, but Eberle gives the home boys hope. Rnd 3 and aging wonder Jagr is stopped and Thunder Bays makes this a clean sweep week with a 2-1 SO win.
Weekly Summary:
New defenseman Adam Larsson has done everything coach Fischer has asked of him. This week he averaged 20 minutes a game and was +2 and played a major role in all three overtime sessions.Four Points against division rivals makes this the best week of the season for the Nor’Westers. Now we need to keep this positive momentum rolling forward.

Corktown Suds
Weekly Preview:
The reporters for Corktown had a little too much eggnog over the holiday season and needed the Minneapolis crew to make the trip down to The Taproom to cover the game. Henrik Lundqvist makes his first start in net for the Deep Freeze.Bankrupt Lansing – searching for new ownership – visits Corktown with Indiana’s GM temporarily
guiding the visiting squad. This was one of the more exciting games you’ll see all year!
Game #1: Minneapolis (3) @ Corktown (2)

It seems as though the Suds may also still be suffering from their holiday hangover, as they give up two early chances – one right off the opening Faceoff for Getzlaf, and another just a minute later with a 3-on-2 rush. Johnson was able to bail out the defense on the first chance, but Datsyuk beat him on the second for his 5th of the season
only 2 minutes into the game. About halfway through the opening period, Datsyuk picked off a pass across the middle of the ice to create a 3-on-1 going the other direction and set up Eriksson (20) who beat the last defender and put it right through the legs of the goaltender. 2-0 Minneapolis with 10:37 to go in the first. The period would end with Minneapolis still leading 2-0 despite Corktown managing to outshoot them 9-7.

Neither team managed to generate any goals in the second period despite a fair number of shots and a powerplay for the Deep Freeze. Corktown skaters blocked 7 shots in the period in addition to Johnson’s 10 saves to keep the score static at 2-0 for Minneapolis entering the third. Corktown will begin the third period shorthanded with a 1:47 left on tripping call to Neal.

Minneapolis would fail to capitalize on the powerplay thanks to some more strong goaltending from Johnson keeping the margin at 2. About 8 minutes into the third period with possession in the Minneapolis’ zone, Tarasenko (17) blasted a shot through the screen and beat Lundqvist for the first goal against the new Deep Freeze keeper. With 2:52 to go and the score still at 2-1 in favor of Minneapolis, Doan takes what could only be described as a boneheaded penalty for Charging across the ice to
hit Neal along the boards, and it only took 31 seconds for Corktown to capitalize. Miller (9) beat Lundqvist high on the glove side to tie the game at 2 with 2:21 left to play. Minneapolis coach Larry Murphy is not pleased, and instructs his team to play for the win in regulation. On the very next shift, Eriksson gets loose for a chance 1-on-1 with Johnson but Johnson is able to make the save to keep the score tied. The aggressive play paid off on the following shift though, as the Corktown defense fell apart and Getzlaf set up Sharp (9) to give Minneapolis the 3-2 lead with 44 seconds to go. Corktown would muster a couple more shots before the final whistle but couldn’t beat Lundqvist again. King Henrik makes 27 saves in his first game (and victory) for the Deep Freeze.

Game #2: Lansing(3) at Corktown(4)

Lansing came out hot in the first, outshooting the Suds 12-6 and controlling play. Despite that, they come out of the period in a 1-1 tie. Corktown controlled play most of the second, but G Conor Hellebuyck was sensational – 1-1 after 2.

The action heated up in the third..Lansing ended up 2 men down thanks to crosschecking penalties from Hudler and Backstrom 20 seconds apart. Hellebuyck stood tall and made several high-quality saves to keep the game 1-1. The momentum seemed palpable – and when Lansing tallied two coals 33 seconds apart just after the kill, a Lansing win seemed a foregone conclusion…but the home side wasn’t done yet.

Santorelli scored at 13:32 to tighten the game up, but Lansing played a confident, controlled late-game style. With 3 minutes to go, things seemed wll in hand – then, disaster. Hellebuyck let in a leaky one from long range at 17:21; only 15 seconds later, the Suds took the lead on a slapper by Paul Martin. The Caps seemed stunned after that – they put the extra attacker on with a minute to go, but constantly cycled down low and never even got a shot off with the man advantage.

Overall, Corktown dominated statistically, with wide leads in shots, hits, blocks, and possession time.

STARS: #3 Santorelli, #2 Martin, #1 Stone (all with 1+2)

Weekly Summary:
Corktown seems a little hung over in their first game after the holiday break, making several defensive blunders ultimately costing them the game. Henrik Lundqvist get the win in his first start for Minneapolis.Lansing suffers perhaps the most heartbreaking loss of their season, as their roster continues to be less than the sum of their parts.

Game #1:
Stats looked even (except the Rangers killed the Regulators on face-offs – we do that well) – but the Regulators put 5 in the net and the Rangers only scored twice. It was that 3-0 2nd period that did us in.
Regulators got single goals from Beauchemin, Kunitz, Ovechkin, Komarov and Vrbata to give Holtby more than enough to win. Benn and Fontaine netted goals for Bathgate.

2. Ovechking 1 Goal
3. Komarov 1 Goal
Fowler blocks 5 form Cal and Holtby stops 31.

STARS (all BGR)
1. Hutton, 28 saves,
2. Kane 1 goal, 2 Pts
3. Russell 1 goal
Benn racks up 15 PIM, Staal wins 19 faceoffs.
Game #3: We get OT in this one as the Rangers tie the game with 47 seconds to go.
That wiped out the 2 goal rally the Dirt Bags put on the Rangers.Game starts with Kane getting his 22nd goal early on. Long Beach ties on Murphy’s goal inside of 2 at the end of 1.Benn (16) then scores midway through the 2nd and the Rangers go into the 3rd with the 2-1 lead. But Gallagher ties it just past the 1 minute mark and Ellis gets  the Dirt Bags the lead on a PP goal at 11:10. Then Benn’s 2nd in the last minute ties it up and send it to OT.In OT, both teams get chances but Talbot and Rinne hold strong – that is until the final minute, that Marincin (3) gets one past the screened Talbot to give Bathgate the 4-3 OT win.

Indiana Sycamores
Weekly Preview:
Indiana tries to get off to a good start under new management – including a big showdown with the division leader. With their goalie fatigued and many other notable players low on games remaining, there were plenty of new faces this week!
Game #3: Second City(2) @ Indiana (6)

The Sycamores got off to an uneven start, falling behind 1-0 on a Mackinnon deflection 7 minutes in. That tally seemed to wake the home side, however – they dominated play the rest of the period, but Tukka Rask stood tall with 10 saves.

The second period was a different story – Indiana came out flying and was quickly rewarded, as Williams scored at 4:33. Three minutes later we had a defenseman breakaway(!!) – Drew Doughty was in all alone and beat Rask glove side to make it 2-1. Late in the period the Sycamoes tacked on a PP goal, again from Williams, to make it 3-1 after 2. Indiana outshot Second City 21-7 in the middle frame.

The third period was largely more of the same. The game was essentially put away when Bergeron scored on a breakaway at 6:25. The Chiefs briefly made it interesting when Landeskog scored on a weak shot, but the Sycamores tacked on 2 goals late for a 6-2 win. Doughty had yet ANOTHER breakaway late in the period – the new coaching staff will be having a few words with their swashbuckling blueliner!

Notable stats: Indiana won 61% of faceoffs; attempted 80 shots to the Chiefs’ 42; Rask was strong even in defeat, with 40 saves.

STARS: #3 Mackinnon(1+1), #2 Bergeron (1+2), #1 Williams (2 Goals)

Game #4: Hampton(7) @ Indiana(3)

After a bit of a ‘warmup’ with Second City, the real test came to town in the form of a Blizzard. Hampton came in with a league-leading 58 points and 145 goals scored. In a controversial move, Indiana decided to keep Roberto Luongo on the bench for a second consecutive game, to keep him fresh for the ‘stretch drive’. That would prove to be a costly error.

The scoreless first period was played on relatively even terms, with Indiana outshooting Hampton 10-7. In the second period, things opened up – once again Indiana gave up the first goal, as Forsberg struck at 4:44. When Ekblad added a bad-angle goal just over a minute later, it looked like the rout might be on for the Blizzard…but once again Justin Williams came up big, with a PP marker at 9:52.

The teams then traded four more goals in the next 10 minutes, leaving Hampton with a 4-3 lead headed to the third. The teams traded chance after chance, as Indiana sought the tying goal..but at 6:31, Indiana’a Eric Gryba was assessed a 5 minute major and game misconduct for charging. Hampton scored three times on the ensuing power play, effectively ending the game and setting the 7-3 final. A late-period scuffle between Forsberg and Plekanec was the only surprise left; both were separated before it got serious and were given 2 each for roughing.

Notable stats: The game was played on even terms other than the 5-minute major. Indiana won more faceoffs, outshot the Blizzard 35-31, and attempted 14 more shots than Hampton. The difference was in goal – Brian Elliott was exceptionally strong for the Blizzard, while backup Rito Berra was mediocre at best for the Sycamores.

STARS: #3 Williams (2G), #2 McGinn (2G), #1 Hertl(2+1)

Weekly Summary:
1-1 is ok, but the Sycamores have to pick up the pieces after a devastating defeat. Newly activated Tomas Plekanec had a great start with 4 points (all assists) in 2 games. The Sycamores desperately need another blueliner.
