| Game #1: | Indiana (4) Thunder Bay (6) A wide open game with the shots on goal about even but Thunder Bay’s defense keep the shots to the outside while Indiana let the Nor’Westers have good scoring chances.1st Period was highlighted by Jonathan Toews 24th & 25th goals of the season. Barkov scored for Thunder Bay leaving the score 2-1 Indiana after 20 minutes.2nd Period was Nor’Wester dominated as Thunder Bay scored 4 unanswered goals. Saad got his 27th and 28th, O’Reilly and Coyle both scored their 16th. After Two it was Thunder Bay 5, Indiana 2.3rd Period defenseman Danny Dekeyser scored to make it 6-2 in favor of Thunder Bay. Indiana scored twice but it was too little too late. Tallies by Plekanec (4) and Krejci (11). While many players head to the golf course on days off the Nor’Westers are heading to Eagle Bay for some ice boating. |

Teams battle to a 1-1 tie heading into the 3rd (both team score in the 1st). Then the Rangers do what they don’t do usually, they score 3 in the final period and give up none for a 4-1 win. Been gets 2 goals and an assist and Kane gets an empty netter with 12 seconds to go for a 2 point game.

| Game #2: | Jagr, Jagr Jagr – oh well, they are on the schedule so you must do what you must do. OK 8 minutes into the game and the Rangers are up 2-0 including a goal from Benn (Kane assists). But Jodan Staal (JGR) nets a PP goal to make it 2-1 by the end of the 1st. Then 4 minutes into the 2nd, Cullen nets a SH goal – they can’t seem to do the conventional, but what difference does it make. But with 6 minutes left in the period, Kane nets one (assisted by Benn and E.Staal – his 2nd assist) to get the Rangers back up 3-2. 3rd Period – Kane makes it 4-2 with a goal early on. But Jagr keeps pouring on the pressure and Martinez puts one past Hutton at the midway point of the 3rd. Then a minute later, the Rangers get a PP and King comes through with a goal. BUT Jagry keeps marching along and Jordan Staal gets his 2nd goal of the game with 2 minutes to go. But Hutton and the Rangers actually survice the extra attacker as the game comes to a close and they win the game! STARS (no misprint below) 1. BGR – Kane 2 goals 2. JGR – Staal 2 goals 3. BGR – Staal 3 assists (he also wins 16 faceoffs) |

Hampton takes on Indy as the season winds down and Blizzard netminder Brian Elliott tries not to suck as we move towards the playoffs.

| Game #1: | A very frustrating game to watch as coach that turned out OK as Hampton overcame a series of horrific line change choices to win 4-1 over Indiana. The game started slowly with both teams combined for 8 shots in the first 10 minutes, but Hampton scored first when Jamie McGinn (soon to be sending out change of address cards thanks to a completely suckeriffic 2016/17 NHL campaign) fired one short side past Roberto Luongo for his 28th of the season. Indiana had all of zero shots in the first five minutes but whacked the post three times which explained why Elliott literally hugged the posts every break in action! Indiana did manage to find the twine in the 1st period though when Mikko Koivu knocked his 18th of the year through Elliott’s legs to make it 1-1. Andrew Shaw capitalized on the wonky Hampton line changes by scoring his 10th on his off wing off a nice give and go from Alex Killorn to make it 2-1. Aaron Ekblad stretched the lead to 3-1 when he blasted a shot from the point stick side past Luongo on the power play to end the 2nd period. It was Ekblad’s 22nd of the season and much much more than he was expected to do this season. Hampton spent much of the 3rd period killing off penalties which turned out to be a not bad thing as Mikael Backlund twice had short-handed breakaways and he converted one of them for his 20th of the season to give Hampton a 4-1 lead. That’s the way that the game ended. Hampton wins on the scoreboard, but Indiana beat up the Blizzard pretty bad with Jonathan Toews putting the smackdown on Andrew Shaw and Shea Weber whipping the snot out of Alex Petrovic in a two team dance off. The whipping gave Hampton a -.5 rating for several minutes which is easily the highest penalty for physical intimidation I’ve seen this season. Yikes. | Weekly Summary: | Hampton wins over rival Indiana but continues to experience unsettling line change decisions when left up to the AI. I decided to do nothing this game but select strategies and did nothing to choose lines or make line changes leaving it all up to the AI. The AI succeeded somehow, but also failed. It was frustrating to watch several times at even strength as our top line was yanked off the ice after a quick whistle only to be replaced by the AI preferred 4th line. WTF? (Editorial note: my top line was set to max usage with lines 2 to 4 at max less two notches) The AI then apparently attempted to make amends by leaving the #1 power play unit out for an entire power play despite two of the forwards and one of the defencemen being fatigued (I think the defenceman was down to 35% for Pete’s sake). BUT, as a result of power plays and other special teams play the top line wound up logging the most ice time so it all worked out I guess.I think this is a great game, but the AI responsible for making line change choices is for crap as despite patches and tinkering with all kinds of settings for usage things still go wonky. Oh well. If this is happening to my team it must also be happening to others so if there is a disparity in home/away records league-wide my guess is that is the reason moreso than any one team being better than another. Anyway just my stupid ol’ Canadian two cents worth |

Lansing enters the week 2 points ahead of Long Beach in the race for the last playoff spot. In addition the Caps have a big game against Wausau with playoff implications for both. Tom Vanek gets the week off to rest his weary legs for the playoff push next week. Rickard Rakell comes back after some therapy. Lansing crowds continue at near capacity with the team in the playoff hunt. Game tickets are hard to get as the Summit Sports Complex is the place to be on hockey night.

| Game #1: | Columbus 3, Lansing 2 (so) Lansing gets the early lead with a 5 on 3 power play goal by Alzner. The Brew Jackets dominate period 2 with 19 shots on goal, and get goals from Lindberg and Gabornik. Lansing turns up the defense in the last period, holding the Jackets to only 5 SOG. At the same time they capitalize on another penalty and Anisimov converts to tie the game 2-2. Over time sees a total of 9 SOG by both teams but no serious threats. In the shootout, Kucherov and Iginla beat Dubnyk for the win.1st star to Anisimov with a goal and assist 2nd star to Alzner for a goal and assist 3rd star to Lindberg for a goal |
| Game #2: | Lansing 4, Wausau 1
Standing room only for this game between division rivals. The first 2 periods see 39 shots on goal but the lamps stay dark as Smith and Hellebuyck show who’s in control. Period 3 continues the same way, but Lansing sees gets a few breakaways and finally converts one 6 minutes in with Barrie scoring. A minute later, Brouwer shoots a laser beam past to give Lansing a 2 goals lead. Lansing goes a bit conservative and Wausau gets a PP goal by Perry to bring the game back to a 1 goal difference. But Lansing gets another odd man rush goal a few minutes later and adds an empty netter late for the final tally. Lansing goals by Barrie, Brouwer, Stafford and Rieder. Wausau goal by Perry. 1st star to Hellebuyck saving 28 of 29 |

| Game #1: | New Jersey is looking to open points up and solidify a playoff spot and as Scott Steven’s is quoted “we need to not watch the scoreboard but rather play our game and control our own destiny.” Tonight that process begins with Corktown. New Jersey opened the scoring with a goal by Kyle Turris which was his 21st of the season and gave New Jersey a lead and the hope but it was short lived because Corktown was able to get two 2nd period goals from both Sean Monahan and Bryan Rust in under 5 minutes and give Corktown the lead and the momentum. New Jersey and Corktown traded goals but Miikka Salomaki was able to get it even to go into the third. So 3-3 and the season in the balance New Jersey had to dig deep and find away to crack Corktown and the vicious momentum the processed. As the period wore on it was Vlady Tarasenko who took the Grizzlies to task and put the New Jersey to the ground. The air in New Jersey was almost all gone. It was a old friend who has been steady early on but has struggled thru the meat of the season. Henrik Sedin with just :39 seconds was like a AED and delivered a shock to both the Grzzlie fans and the Corktown bench netting his 16th of the season. Coach Stevens on a timeout taken by Corktown was seen telling his team : The TIME is NOW!!” We need to capitalize of this. Viktor Arvidsson took heed to the every word of his coach and with :15 seconds gave New Jersey the lead which ultimately became a New Jersey win and should have clinched a playoff spot. New Jersey is done for this week but will play California 3 times next week. With 27 seconds to go, Garrison gets his 2nd goal of the year for Alamo to tie the game. No score through OT. Then, weird, both Ripon and Alamo score on their first two attempts. Fleury is well on his way to a shut out when… oops? Bathgate pulls the goalie and Benn scores his 38th of the season assisted by Kane (58) and Staal (23) at 19:43 10 seconds later Nino “Pledge Pin on His Uniform” Niederreiter scores his 16th of the season assisted by Marleau (21) and Sedin (35). Bandits go on to win this one 4-1 Bathgate outshoots Brentwood 38-27 STAR 1 Fleury 37 saves Notables One other “notable” is that the Bandits out hit Bathgate by 29-9 and had more scoring chances by 20-7. |

Or would they falter just as Bathgate did the game before?1st Period Lakeland comes out firing on all cylinders as Oshie (I first typed “Oshit”) was a one man army scoring his 27th goal 22 seconds in. He added another (28) 6 minutes later and just like that Lakeland was up 2-0.Brentwood showing they may be ready for the playoffs, comes back with goals by Ekman-Larsson (29) assisted by Malkin (42) and Crosby (56) and Malkin with his 27th of the season 47 seconds later assisted by Bieksa (20) and Crosby (57).We leave the first period tied 2-2.
2nd Period Less than 3 minutes later Malkin scores his second of the night (28) assisted by Parenteau (41) and Ekman-Larsson (41) to tie it up at 3. At 10:15 Malkin completes the natural Hat Trick scoring his 29th of the season assisted by Bieksa (21) and Crosby (58) to give the Bandits the lead 4-3. 3rd Period Brentwood wins this one 5-3 STAR 1 Malkin 3 Goals 1 Assist Notables Both teams had anemic power plays.
