Corktown Suds Corktown has 1 home game this week
Game #1: Corktown is in a very tough division and needs every point it can get. However, the last place Lumberjacks came in and dominated the show.

Wausau 3-1

Weekly Summary: Corktown lost their only home game to begin the new year.

Brentwood Bandits Only one home game after the Holiday Break for the Bandits. New additions Kessel, Miller, and Braun are all ready to make a difference.
Corktown Suds @ Brentwood Bandits The Suds come to town to try to wash the Bandits out of 1st place.

The big story in this game was Power Plays. Brentwood had NINE (9) and Corktown had ZERO (0). But Corktown penalty killing was AMAZING and kept Brentwood from scoring on the man advantage. 0-9 on the PP?? Ouch.

But, other than that this game was all Brentwood. Out shooting Corktown 41-22. If it weren’t for Corktown’s Defense, this game would have been a blowout.

Final score Bandits win 4-1

Hoping the PP is better on the road this week!

Clearfield Bison Two home games for the league-leading Bison…ownership keeps waiting for the ‘regression’ shoe to drop (we know we aren’t a 120-point team)…is this the week it happens?
California Regulators @ Clearfield Bison With a bit of a ‘cushion’ in the standings and facing a struggling team, Clearfield decides to gamble and rest leading goal scorer Rakell.

That may not have been wise.

Clearfield pushed the action early, and got the game’s first tallyfrom Tomas Hertl late in the first.

Clearfield seemed to be in their comfort zone – defending a lead – when the roof caved in late in the second. Two goals within 63 seconds, both from the left dot, both over Bobby Lu’s (suddenly WEAK) glove hand – and the Regulators suddenly took the lead.

Clearfield isn’t built to come from behind, and despite decent shot totals they dodn;t make much happen in the third. When Rask scored 13:48 into the third, with the way Grubauer was playing I knew it was all over but the shoutin’..and 3-1 was indeed the final.

Clearfield game-planed to stop the Silfverberg line, and that worked…but man oh man did the Rask/Schmaltz/Zibanejad line kill us. Cumulatively they had 2 goals, 6 points, and were +9!

The stats were pretty even…Clearfield led in shots 35-29 and in scoring chances 13-11. The Bison controlled faceoffs, winning 65%, but that’s more useful with a lead.

STARS: #1 Schmaltz 1G 2A +3, #2 Grubauer 34 sv, #3 Rask 1G 1A +3.

California has some very good talent, not sure why they have struggled so much!

Long Beach Ice Dogs @ Clearfield Bison After a low-scoring, gentle (only 2 PPs total) game vs. CAL, we had an entirely different affair vs. Long Beach.

Clearfield came out smoking, registering 3 goals in the first 7 minutes…the (well-rested) Rakell getting on the board for the Bison, along with Chimera and Koivu. With the stingy Bison D, we felt pretty confident that 3 goals would be enough.

3 goals didn’t even win the PERIOD (Regression can be a cold-hearted witch!!).

In what seems to be a troubling trend for Luongo, he allowed 3 goals in3:23 right before the end of the first to send us to intermission tied. Clearfield considered a goalie change, but left the veteran in there…and he promptly gave up a 4th goal – the HT goal for Jeff Skinner – 8 minutes into the second.

That seemed to be a turning point, though…from there, Clearfield gradually took control of the game, generating plenty of chances..and Brodie got the tying tally at 18:19.

The third period featured less shots but plenty more chances..and finally the newbie, Patrick Kane, burst through the D and beat Markstrom with just over 3 minutes to go. Clearfield withstood the late barrage by the Ice Dogs to claim a hard-fought 5-4 win.

There were an incredible amount of scoring chances in this game – Clearfield had 27, LBD had 20! Shots were even, 33-32 CLE. The Bison won 66% of faceoffs, and that was important this time. Lots of PP action – CLE went 1-4, LBD went 2-5 with the man advantage.

STARS: #1 Skinner 3G #2 Kane 1G 2A #3 Rakell 1G 1A

Weekly Summary: Clearfield splits their 2 home games, but gets some key rest for a few players.

Hampton Blizzard One home game this week for Hampton and it’s against the Wasau Lumberjacks.
Wausau Lumberjacks @ Hampton Blizzard The Lumberjacks got on the board first with a power play goal on a 5-on-3 in the first period by Dumba assisted by Zucker and Bourque.
From then on the game was pretty much all Hampton with the Blizzard outshooting the Lumberjacks 33-16 after a 12-12 first period. Trocheck tipped in a weak shot by Malkin early in the 3rd period to tie the game up, finally beating Jimmy Howard.
Howard was the story of the game though blanking the Blizzard for the rest of the period. With the Blizzard bracing for overtime the puck popped loose in front of Carey Price and Giroux drew the puck back to Palat whose nifty cross-ice feed was rifled home by Dumba for his 2nd of the game to give the Lumberjacks the 2-1 win.
Hampton pulled the goalie with a minute to go but failed to register a shot.
Weekly Summary: Hampton comes away with el zippo as Howard carried the Lumberjacks to victory. Great way to start the 2018 year!

California Regulators
Brentwood Bandits @ California Regulators The Regulators host the Bandits. The Bandits are a good team, and the Regulators are not.

The Bandits win 3-1 and go home.

Weekly Summary: California drops its only home game this week.

Thunder Bay Nor’Westers Stuck in the doldrums. I step forward 2 steps backward.
Long Beach Ice Dogs @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers A blowout 8-3 win on the back of 4 power play goals. Seth Jones scored twice (10/11), Charlie Coyle scored twice (9/10) and Athanasiou(11), Zaitsev(2), O’Reilly(11) and Saad(8).
Long Beach had goals by Bozak(5) and two by Marner(6/7).After scoring 5 times in the opening period and leading 5-1 after 20 minutes. This game was over.
LA Great Danes @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers Jamie Benn(9) opened the scoring giving LA a 1-0 lead after 1 period of play. Thunder Bay scored twice in the 2nd period Athanaasiou(12) and Saad(9) to re-gain the lead 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Then Ben Bishop broke down giving up 2 goals in the 3rd period on just 7 shots. Schenn(10) and Jokinen(7) stole a win on the road 3-2.

Bucks County Racoons @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers Bishop continued to disentergrate giving up 6 goals on just 27 shots. Moore(6&7), Lucic(9), Kane(6), Johansson(9&10), while Thunder Bay scored just twice Reilly Smith(6) and Coyle(11)
Weekly Summary: Another very disappointing week for Thunder Bay. It is very clear here at the half way point that we are not a play-off team unless we can find some consistent goal tending and we maybe too far out of the race already.

Rumors of the Nor’Westers making phones calls looking for a goalie.

Jagr Mullets Jagr’s had an inconsistent year, resulting in two major roster shakeups. Has the proper balance been found?
Clearfield Bison @ Jagr Mullets Powerhouse Clearfield comes to town – can they add to their league-high 50 points?

When you’re playing the best team in the league, the last thing you want to do is spend a lot of time in the penalty box; generally not a formula for success. But Jagr practically lives in the sin bin, collecting 29 PIM (including a game misconduct for Radulov).

But the Mullets hold the Bison to only 1 goal on 6 power-plays; and they dictate play most of the game thanks to a huge 60.9% advantage in the faceoff circle. Jagr also intimidates Clearfield by out-hitting them 27-17.

Forty six seconds into the 2nd period, Jagr is up 3-1 thanks to huge contributions from the newly acquired Roman Polak, Hampus Lindholm, and Marian Gaborik who all score goals.

By 3:28 in the 3rd, it’s a 3-3 game as Clearfield gets a goal from Jagr against Jagr (BOOM!) and Bergeron. But Patrik Laine (17) and Nazem Kadri (22) pad their stats even more to pull ahead 5-3. Patrick Kane (10) scores in the back half of the 3rd to make it interesting, but Alec Martinez’ empty netter with 1 minute remaining seals the 6-4 Mullet victory.

While not brothers in real life, they acted like it on the ice — the united Lindholms tear it up.
Hampus gets a goal and assist in his Jagr debut, while Elias collects 3 assists in the game.

Scoring Summary

Corktown Suds @ Jagr Mullets The young guns of Corktown (Eichel, Matthews, Tarasenko, etc.) come to town. Can they leave with points?

One man — new #1 Mullet goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy — says no. He stops all 32 shots en route to a 2-0 shutout of the Suds.

Taylor Hall provides all the offense Jagr needs, scoring his 8th and 9th goals on the season.

Jagr totally dominates the faceoff circle 72.9% to 27.1%, and has a huge edge in shot attempts 88-52. The Mullet PP is still ice cold, however – a concern to watch.

Scoring Summary
Per Time Str Team
1 2:53 EV JAG Hall (8), assisted by Schultz (11) and Kadri (9)
3 17:06 EV JAG Hall (9), assisted by Hampus Lindholm (14) and Radulov (13)

Star 3: CRK Lehtonen 43 saves

GWG: Taylor Hall

Notables: CRK Lehtonen 43 saves
JAG Vasilevskiy 32 saves, Lindholm 15 faceoffs won

Weekly Summary: Jagr collects 4 of a possible 4 points at home this week; the playoffs are still likely out of reach but for once the arrow appears to be trending upward.

Long Beach Ice Dogs
New Jersey Grizzlies @ Long Beach Ice Dogs Arvidsson scored 2 goals, Johansen and Weber added 2 assists each as New Jersey beat Long Beach 4-2. Holtby made 25 saves to pick up the win.
Weekly Summary: Long Beach drops their only home game of thr week.

LA Great Danes 3 Home games for the Danes, who spent the holiday break working on their league-worst power play. No easy games in the MWHL, but a favorable schedule with the home games against 3 sub .500 teams.
Bathgate Rangers @ LA Great Danes Mark Scheifele starts things off quickly with a goal 1:23 into the game off a 2 on 1, and John Carlson extends the lead with a goal at 16:49 of the 1st. No PP chances for either team in the first, but the Danes get 3 PP chances in period 2, including a 1-minute 5 on 3. Nothing has changed as the Danes fail to convert and hold the 2-0 lead going into the 3rd. Things go badly in the 3rd for LA, starting with pest Andrew Shaw’s first goal of the year on a 3 on 1 just 1:44 in. 14 Seconds later, Zajac takes a double-minor for high-sticking and the Danes again fail on the PP. LA takes a penalty at 12:31, and the Rangers show LA what a PP looks like, with Ferland scoring to tie the game 2-2. Less than a minute later, the Danes get their 6th PP chance of the game, and they are totally disorganized and do nothing. At this point, LA hopes to at least salvage a point and get to OT. But, the Danes high-priced defense proves their worth, as Ryan Suter, who ended the Danes last game before the break with an OT winner, scored another game-winner with 1:51 left. The Danes get the win despite their special teams – 0-6 on the PP, and the Rangers go 1-1.
New Jersey Grizzlies @ LA Great Danes 11 Minutes into the game, all hell breaks loose – Perry and Suter get into a fight, with Perry decking Suter, and Johansen and Kesler engage and fight to a draw. Somehow, Suter also gets a game misconduct, with everyone else receiving 5-minute majors. Things settle down after that, and Pietrangelo opens the scoring at 18:04 of the first. Draisaitl got NJ even with a PPG late in period 2, but LA responds with a PPG of their own by Kesler in the last minute of the period to take a 2-1 lead into the 3rd period. The Grizzlies then get a little chippy and take 3 penalties in the 3rd period, and the Danes respond with a tremendous 3rd period. 4 3rd period goals by LA, 2 on the PP as they pull away for a 6-1 win, outshooting NJ 23-7 and out-chancing them 12-0 in the 3rd. 3 Goals from defensemen for LA in this one, with Pietrangelo and Hamilton earning the first 2 stars with 1G-1A each, and Carlson adding a PPG in the 3rd. Ehlers assisted on the game’s last 3 goals, and Scheifele also added 3 assists. Best of all, 3-5 on the PP for the Danes.
Toledo Walleye @ LA Great Danes 1:35 in, Barrie takes a 4-minute high sticking penalty, and …. wait for it …. a POWER PLAY GOAL by the Danes from Alex Pietrangelo just 3:28 in. But, LA’s PK, not strong the first part of the year, seems to be getting worse as Krejci ties the game on a PPG at 11:12 of the first. It stayed that way until 4th liner Mikkel Boedker beat Dubnyk on a breakaway at 16:12 of the 2nd. Mark Scheifle the got a key insurance goal at 8:11 of the 3rd to give the Danes a 3-1 lead. Toledo competed hard all night and outchanced LA 19-12 for the game, but a strong outing in goal by backup Steve Mason and a physical Danes D, led by Brayden McNabb’s 6 hits in 13 minutes of ice time, kept Toledo off the board the rest of the way. Scheifele is red-hot (see the weekly recap), earning the game’s first star with 1G-1A.
Weekly Summary: Along with a road win over Thunder Bay, the Danes sweep the week with 4 straight wins. Who’s Hot:

The Great Dane, Frederick Anderson, goes 3-0 for the week with a 1.67 GAA and .934 save % and has won his last 7 starts, going undefeated the entire abbeviated December schedule. Mark Scheifele had 8 points in week #9 with 2G-6A and has an 11-game point streak with 6G-13A over that stretch. He is also tied for the team lead in +/- at +21 for the season. And since acquiring Carlson/Bonino via trade, the Great Danes have gone 9-2-1. Lots of tight games, but the Danes continue to find ways to win.

Alamo Defenders For the first time this season, Alamo will play host to three visitors. Thunder Bay, Minneapolis, and Clearfield come to town.
Thunder Bay Nor’Westers @ Alamo Defenders This game was scoreless through 1 period. Then, in the 2nd, the scoring started. Blake Wheeler nets his 8th goal of the season. Later, Eaves scores his 16th goal. Then, in the 3rd, Eaves scores his second goal of the year. Lehner earns the shutout for the Defenders.

Alamo 3 Thunder Bay 0

1st star – Lehner
2nd star – Eaves
3rd star – Wheeler

Minneapolis Deep Freeze @ Alamo Defenders This game was a grind as both teams have 18 shots on net after 2 periods. In the 2nd period, Pavelski scores his 13th goal for the Deep Freeze. Later in the 2nd, Alamo scores two as Marchand and Wheeler find the net. In the 3rd, Pacioretty and Pearson score to put the game away. The key to the 3rd was Alamo outshooting Minneapolis,16-4.

Alamo 4 Minneapolis 1

1st – Pacioretty
2nd -Wheeler
3rd – Marchand

Clearfield Bison @ Alamo Defenders Clearfield outplays Alamo early, and scores the first two goals. Little and Bergeron score for the Bison. But, then Alamo explodes in the 3rd with 4 goals. One goal was an empty netter for Alamo. Three defensemen do the damage, Ekblad, Vlasic, and Yandle score. Then Pacioretty gets the insurance goal.

Alamo 4 Clearfield 2

1st – Pacioretty
2nd – Ekblad
3rd – Yandle

Weekly Summary: Alamo starts off slowly in all 3 games, but puts on a good show late in order to win all 3 against Thunder Bay, Minneapolis, and Clearfield.

Gilbert Sharks
Wausau Lumberjacks @ Gilbert Sharks Gilbert dominates Wausau 6-0 behind a hat trick from mark Giordano and a shutout by Tuuka Rask
Lakeland Flying Tigers @ Gilbert Sharks Ryan Spooner gets the Game Winner in OT to give Gilbert a 4-3 win
Columbus Brew Jackets @ Gilbert Sharks Another OT game but this one doesn’t go Gilbert’s way as Columbus wins the shootout 2-0 to end with a 3-2 Victory
Weekly Summary: Gilbert gets 5 points in 3 games to try to work their way up in the satndings before it is too late

Bathgate Rangers Only 1 home game this week, so Management doesn’t have to listen to the fans complain about the recent roster dumps (their terms). But then the attendance has been dropping a bit. But the 4 fans still left in the house enjoy things just as much as always – maybe more since the concession stand lines are much shorter. ……..
Jagr Mullets @ Bathgate Rangers JAGR in the house – the much changed Jagr. Good news for the Rangers – their big three defensemen (Klingberg, Karrlson and Subban) all get assists – but the bad news, they couldn’t stop Ovechkin as he tallies 3 times for the Hat Trick. Oh well. and Ovechkin wasn’t alone in the scoring. Perron and Schultz also tallied. Schultz and Ovechkin converted on power plays. And all that scoring (5-2) happened after a scoreless 1st period.
STARS (all JAGR)
1. Ovechkin, 3 goals, 1 assist
2. Schultz 1 goal, 1 assist [GWG]
3. Perron 1 goalJAGR piles on 23 shots in a 2 goal 2nd, and 9 shots in a 3 goal third.
Weekly Summary: That’s it. JAGR – GOOD! Bathgate – BAD!

Bucks County Racoons 3 home games this week with none of the opponents currently sporting a .500 record. Time to make some hay for the Racs….
Jagr Mullets @ Bucks County Racoons So much for making hay. Jagr scores 3 goals in the 1st period en route to a 6-4 win. The Mullets out shoot the home team 16-5 in that first period, and a late PP goal in the 3rd made the score somewhat respectable for the Racs. Jagr did everything right and BC couldn’t match. Ovechkin had 2 G and 1 A, Kadri had 2 goals and Radulov had a goal and an assist to gain 3 star honors.
Bathgate Rangers @ Bucks County Racoons Bucks County reversed it’s first period fortunes against the visiting Rangers, notching both goals and out shooting the visitors on the way to a 5-3 victory. The 4th line for the Raccoons did most of the damage, with Smith picking up 2 G and an assist and Lewis also chipping in a goal and an assist. The Racs held a 4-1 lead at the mid point of the game, but as usual had to hang on for the win.
Gilbert Sharks @ Bucks County Racoons In a very evenly played contest, Dominic Moore scored a PP goal at 17:29 of the 3rd period while Burrows was serving a 4 minute minor for boarding, and the Bucks County Raccoons defeated the Gilbert Sharks 4-3. Gilbert jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 1, but BC rebounded with 3 in the 2nd, two of the goals coming from the 3rd line. After a Josi PP goal tied the game at 3, Moore responded with his goal, a rebound off a Jayden Schwartz shot.
Weekly Summary: 4 out of 6 points against the middle of the pack of the MHL. Not bad, but not enough to get the fans lining up for playoff tickets just yet.

Chicago Cosa Nostra  Chicago looking to tread water for the second year in a row. But the ship seems to be sinking. Quickly!
Brentwood Bandits @ Chicago Cosa Nostra Brentwood visits Chi-Town as they continue to cruise along this season with a very balanced team firing on all cylinders.

1st Period
Bandits score two (Marleau, Backes)

2nd Period
Marleau makes it 3-0.

3rd Period
Pastrnak and Duclair pot one each to make it 3-2 as Chicago tries to come back, but Niederreiter scores his 13th of the season and the score of 4-2 stands.

Crosby blanked on the scoresheet. Doesn’t happen often.

Shots were pretty even with Brentwood 37 and Chicago 36.

Brentwood lead in FOW, Hits, Blocks, and Scoring Chances.

Star 1 – BWB Marleau 2G
Star 2 – BWB Backes 1G, 2A
Star 3 – Tavares 4A

Gibson 34 saves
Condon 33 saves

Brentwood manned the game at the behest of Chicago owner (Stray). Having won their only home game this week, plus this game and yet another on the road (3-0 thus far), it looks like a good week for the Bandits.

California Regulators @ Chicago Cosa Nostra California gets a Shut-Out from Grubauer. Chicago out-shoots the Regulators 41 to 20. Jonathan Bernier plays great but allows 2 past him.
Final Score: California 2 – Chicago 0
Lakeland Flying Tigers @ Chicago Cosa Nostra Lakeland goes up 4-0 after 2 Periods of play before the Cosa Nostra wake up.
Final Score: Lakeland 5 – Chicago 2
Weekly Summary: Chicago will be sleeping with the fishes very soon. Rumors abound that a Chicago Star could be headed east…

New Jersey Grizzlies New Jersey is getting ready for a post New Years run and to see what we are made of.
Chicago Cosa Nostra @ New Jersey Grizzlies New Jersey brought the firing squad against Chicago’s goalie Mike Condon. Chicago made interesting late but it was Viktor Arvidsson who has been a Chicago killer coming through with the big goal in the third to give Grizzlies the Win.

Weekly Summary: New Jersey has two wins this week at home and will look to next week to continue chopping.

Weekly Summary: Best week of the season for Toledo with 6 points in 3 home games, 2 over teams with 40+ points. Dubnyk has a good homestand winning 2 while saving 41 of 44 and a 1.5 GAA.
Anisimov with 3G and 1A, Krejci 2G and 2A (43-18 faceoffs), Okposo and van Riemsdyke with 1G and 3A each.

Lakeland Flying Tigers 2 Home Games for the Flying Tigers this week. VS Hampton and Minneapolis…2 tough teams in this year’s league.
Hampton Blizzard @ Lakeland Flying Tigers Lakeland 4, Hampton 1.

Not the greatest of games for either team but Jones makes key saves late in the game when it mattered and Lakeland survives.

Minneapolis Deep Freeze @ Lakeland Flying Tigers Lakeland 4, Minneapolis 2.

Lakeland is basically outplayed all over the ice, except on the scoreboard. Jones again makes some key saves (2 on breakaways) and it makes the difference.

Weekly Summary: 4 points in 2 games, will always take that. I would have to say…Jones wasn’t as bad as he has been on the road so far this year.

Weekly Preview: The Lumberjacks play only one home game this week. The Bathgate Rangers come to town with a 13-14-5 record.
Bathgate Rangers @ Wausau Lumberjacks Bathgate 2 Wausau 1
The Rangers get goals from Staal and Zajac .
Weekly Summary: Lumberjacks go 0-1 at home for the week.
