---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Two home games this week on 11/18 we host Lafayette and then on 11/22 we host the high scoring California. One line-up change this week is Filip Hronek a rookie getting a chance to show what he can do in MWHL. Jake Muzzin played 2 games last week and did not show much. |
Lafayette Homesteaders @ Thunder Bay NorWesters | Thunder Bay started fast scoring the first two goals of the game Athanasiou (9th) and Barkov (9th). The Nor’Westers top line of Landeskog-Barkov-Athanasiou continues to provide balanced scoring. Later in the 1st period the Homesteaders rallied to make the score 2-1 on a goal by Brown(3rd).
The 2nd period play was dominated by Lafayette who had 14 shots to Thunder Bays 7. Steve Duchene tied the game scoring his 8th of the season. The 3rd period started with Jack Eichel pushing Lafayette into the lead 3-2 on his 9th goal of the season. The middle of the period was tight hard play-off tempo hockey. As the clock ticked into the final minute of play Thunder Bay was under pressure when there was a scrum behind Greiss’ net 5 players were back there wacking and shoving. Duschene got control and made a blind backhand pass into the slot, but no Homesteaders were there. Jaccob Slavin took the puck and raced up ice the Lafayette defenders picked up Thunder Bay two forwards and left Slavin unchecked. Slavin skated across the Lafayette blue and and teed up a thunderous slap shot that scored from 60 feet out at 19:04 tying the game at 3-3. Everybody in the stands were on their feet. After slogging around in the neutral zone for 25 second, Dan Petry intercepted a pass fed the puck up to the rightwing Andreas Athanasiou streaking down his wing. AA cut hard to the net but instead of shooting rifled a pass across the crease to Landeskog who deflected the pass into the net for the game winning goal at 19:54. Final Score Thunder Bay 4 and Lafayette 3 – A brutal loss for Lafayette after playing a near perfect game for 59 minutes. |
California Regulators @ Thunder Bay NorWesters | Coming off a thrilling last minute victory over Lafayette. Ryan O’Reilly (8th) scored just 35 seconds into the game. Sam Reinhart (6th) tied the game, before Kyle Connor’s (8th) of the season pushed Thunder bay into the lead 2-1 after 20 minutes. California outshot Thunder Bay 19 to 6.
The only goal of the 2nd period was by Dan Petry (6th) to push the lead to 3-1. California continued to dominate the game out shooting Thunder Bay 35 to 16. Thomas Greiss is standing on his head and making the recent trade look like a steal. The final stanza was more of the same. Caly scored on Huberdeau’s 6th of the season to make the score 3-2 in favor of Thunder Bay. California could not get any more as Greiss stopped 45 of 47 shots. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Two wins both by one goal provided the hometown fans great entertainment. The addition of Thomas Greiss has been a huge boost to the teams success and confidence. Filip Hronek’s 2 games resulted in no points but the young defender showed promise in the defensive zone. He might get a few more game before being returned to the Great Lakes Hockey league for more seasoning. |

Charlotte Buzzards @ LA Great Danes | This was an exciting, tight game that went to a shootout to decide things. The teams traded goals throughout. LA led 3-2 after 2, but Charlotte took the lead in the 3rd before the Danes tied it with 9 minute left. So a 4-4 game after regulation.
Goal scorers were Burns, Larkin (2), and Pavelski for Charlotte and Thornton, Scheifele, Hoffman, and Schenn for LA. In the shootout, Danes goalie Semyon Varlamov stopped Taresenko and Pavelski, and Scheifele and Benn beat Carey Price to end the shootout in 2 rounds. A big 5-4 SOW for the Danes. |
Thunder Bay NorWesters @ LA Great Danes | The lineup changes worked versus Charlotte, so the same lineup against Thunder Bay except Casey Desmith gets his chance in net. It was defensive battle and it took almost 37 minutes before a goal was scored. It came from D-man Jeff Petry 9 seconds after an LA penalty kill. Bit a late period 2 Thunder Bay penalty carried into the 3rd, and Brayden Schenn converts the PPG at :31 to tie the game. LA takes their first lead on PPG by Mike Hoffman, but Barkov ties the game at 2-2 a minute later at 12:56. A defensive breakdown by Thunder Bay leads to a 2 on 1 for LA, and Alex Pietrangelo nets his 6th goal of the seaon at 15:44. And the Great Danes pull away at the end on goals by Benn at 17:16 and an empty-netter by Brodin. Back-to-back wins at home for the Great Danes, this one a 5-2 win over 1st place Thunder Bay.
Hoffman, Pietrangelo, and Schenn for LA sweep the stars of the game, all with 1G-1A. Hoffman with 7 SOG and 3 blocks, and Schenn with 5 blocks and 4 hits stepped up in a big way with strong, 2-way play. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | This was a different Great Dane team this week and the crowd appreciated the big efforts after a brutal start at home in the first 4 weeks. Just as we begin to figure things out at home, it’s time for a road trip next week with 3 of 4 away games, where the Danes are 3-3 so far. |

WEEKLY SUMMARY: | A solid week for the Cosa Nostra. Rumors abound that a few Chicago players are on the trading block might have helped spark some life into the Cosa Nostra. |
Charlotte Buzzards | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Charlotte, with its share of home ice issues this season, hosted Alamo on November 22. |
Alamo Defenders @ Charlotte Buzzards | Both goalies shined brightly in this contest and after 77 shots in regulation the game remained tied 1-1. It required seven more shots and four plus minutes of three-on-three overtime before this one was finally settled: a Jonathan Marchessault game winning goal with 50 seconds left before the shootout became required lifted the Buzzards over their Alamo visitors, 2-1. Alamo’s Robin Lehner was the hard-luck loser. A Vlad Tarasenko goal that tied the game 1-1 2:50 into the second period was the only other blemish for Lehner who inexplicably was not among the three stars (I guess the game engine has other ideas). A Steve Stamkos goal 3:57 into the game provided the Defenders with the early 1-0 lead; Stamkos was also among the notables for winning 15 faceoffs.Carey Price with 38 saves was bestowed first star honors followed by Marchessault and Tarasenko. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | In its lone home game of this fifth week, the Buzzards get a desperately needed bounce back win in its own building, to reverse a disturbing losing trend on its own ice. As the writeup indicates, Alamo and Charlotte both deserved at least a point in this wildly entertaining goalie dual. |
Bucks County Raccoons | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Three home games on tap, two of which are against contenders in their respective divisions…. |
LA Great Danes @ Bucks County Raccoons | The top line for the Racs score a goal each (Meier, Kane, McDavid empty netter) and Ben Bishop turns away all 35 shotes he faces as BC comes away with a 3-0 win over the LA Great Danes |
Thunder Bay NorWesters @ Bucks County Raccoons | Thunder Bay attempts 86 shots, helped by the 6 Power Plays they received, but were only able to beat Ben Bishop once late in the third period as the Bucks County Raccoons skated past the NorWesters by a score of 3-1. Bishop was outstanding again, stopping 40 of the 41 SOG for the visitors. |
Jagr Mullets @ Bucks County Raccoons | Alexander Radulov scored 13 seconds into the game, but that was it for scoring for the Mullets as Ben Bishop was brilliant again in goal, leading the BC Raccoons to a 4-1 victory. The Mullets fired 45 SOG, 9 for Ovechkin alone, but could not find the back of the net after their first shot. Ryan Johansen scored twice for the home team, the last into an empty net. |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Bucks County takes all 3 home games this week as Ben Bishop had 119 saves on 121 shots and allowed only 2 goals in the 3 games. BC also killed all 11 PP they faced |
Toledo Walleye | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Toledo does some major line changes to try and get scoring from anyone not named Pettersson or Arvidsson. Lafayette is the first team to take part in the experiment. |
Lafayette Homesteaders @ Toledo Walleye | Toledo 5, Lafayette 3 — First period sees the Walleye dominate with 3 goals, 2 by players not on the first line. First BAckstrom, then Connolly get goals. Finally Arvidsson gets in the old habit for this 13th of the season. The first period ends 3-0 Walleye.
2nd period is fairly quite. The Walleye attack dries up and managers only 5 SOG. The Homesteaders are more active, and get one in with Duchene lighting the lamp. Its 3-1 home team. 3rd period. – Defenses dominate the first 9 minutes until Krejci scores a goal to make it 4-1 Toledo. The visitors respond with energy, and quickly the lead is cut to 1, as Garland scores twice to make it pucker time in the stands and on the bench. The Walleye manage to hold things together, finally getting a cheap empty netter by Barrie near the end. Final 5-3 Walleye. 1st star – Garland 2G |
WEEKLY SUMMARY: | Walleye experiment works well with 4 of 5 goals by other than the 1st line. plus the win. |
Jagr Mullets | |
---|---|
WEEKLY PREVIEW: | Mullets have a 3 game homestand – will they make the most of it, or get clipped? |
Toledo Walleye @ Jagr Mullets | Toledo gives up two early goals, but makes a game of it as it’s 3-3 halfway through the third period. But then Lindholm and Reilly beat Dubnyk and that’s all she wrote.
