Biggest thing in the 2nd period was a 5 minute major called on Ryan Strome for BUTT-ENDING! But the Rangers killed it off and the 2nd period ends with the Rangers still up 3-0.

1:23 into the 3rd, Klingberg cross-checks and Tavares scores on the delayed penalty for a 4-0 Bathgate lead. But Cincinnati finally gets on the board when Point scores 6 minutes into the 3rd making it 4-1 Rangers. But that won’t be the last hot Inferno. Less than 2 minutes to go and the Inferno are pressing hard, Couture gets it in the Ranger end, feeds DeBrusk and he shots and scores for his 1st of the year and it’s 4-2 Bathgate with 1:19 left. Cincinnati wins the center ice face-off and Pacioretty comes in as the extra attacker. He shots, it’s blocked. Karlsson to Forsberg – shot – Reimer Save. Rangers clear but Karlsson again gains control – Pacioretty the shot, Reimer great save. Pionk gets it, passes up ice to Panarin – Forseberg knocks him off the puck, after several shots and blocks, Teravainen gets the puck – over the line, and Reimer stones him! After the faceoff, Reimer stones Pacioretty. More blocked shots, more Reimer saves – Cincinnati won’t give up and this is all in the last minute!! After Reimer stops a wraparound, the puck is loose out front. Perron finds it, to Pacioretty to Carlson, to Perron – shots – HE SCORES! His 3rd and now it’s 4-3 Bathgate – but there are only 3 seconds left and the Rangers win the faceoff and it’s over! Wild finish, but Rangers still beat the Inferno (for now).

3 minutes into the 3rd and Oleksiak goes off for holding and Killorn gets another PP goal to tie the game! Oh-oh, are we seeing a 3rd period issue? But what – DeAngelo** scores 2 minutes later and the Rangers are back up 4-3! (be sure to see the ** in the summary). So now the Rangers begin the work of holding off the opposition again – only this time there are 14 1/2 minutes to kill and they do very well for 10 of them. Then this guy named Marchand decides enough is enough and he ties the game with 3 1/2 to go. Then scores again a minute later for a 1 goal Charlotte lead. And to top it off, he gets the natural hat trick with 49 seconds left when he fires one into an empty net!! Charlotte wins the 3rd period 4-1 and the game 6-4 (yikes – we’ve seen this before). Charlotte also won 61.5% of the face-offs.

Driedger makes 34 saves, Backlund gets 3 assists and wins 16 faceoffs! Both teams had 38 shots.

** DeAngelo scoring? [not bad for an OFF 1.0] but, Hmmm, he wasn’t supposed to play this year but GUESS WHAT, I forgot to send in my Coach’s file and had no lines assigned to each game. So Charlotte got some interesting selections BUT SO DID CINCINNAT – so who knows what would have happened otherwise. But I don’t make that mistake again (hopefully – and this crew is probably playing the road games as well). And turns out the was some crazy actions going on after the Charlotte game between DeAngelo and Georgiev. Maybe some disciplinary action required.

LA gets back to back power plays early in the 3rd, but it’s Jagr with the shortie by Elias Lindholm to make it a 3-1 game. But Nikolaj Ehlers gets the goal back at the end of the same PP to restore the 3-goal lead at 4-1. You could see the relief in Scooby Doo Arena after that goal as the SHG by Jagr had the fans and Scooby Doo getting very anxious.

Jagr then seems to melt down, taking 3 more penalties, that’s 5 minors in the 3rd after only one matching minor in the first 2 periods. LA was absolutely in control of this game, and as things were winding down LA had a 25-3 scoring chance advantage.

But a Kaprizov deflection goal with 2:33 left made it 4-2. Jagr pulled their goalie, and dominated the rest of the way. LA couldn’t get a line change, panic was everywhere, and Jagr did everything but beat Varlamov, and LA hangs on for the 4-2 win.

Varly was outstanding at the end and earned the #1 star with 33 saves. Giroux and Ehlers with 1G each were stars 2/3.

A better start in this one, and Brock Boeser opens the scoring at 13:50. But still a tight game as we go to period 2, and Andre Palat ties the game midway through the 2nd on a power play, as Chicago peppered Shesterkin with 7 SOG on the double-minor penalty by LA.

So we go to period 3 tied at 1. A big PPG by Roope Hintz puts LA up at 11:16, but a bad line change by LA results in Jordan Kyrou tieing the score at 2-2 from a tough angle a minute + later. Here we go again!

Neither team does much the rest of the way, and LA takes some comfort in at least earning a point as regulation time ends with the score 2-2.

Mark Scheifele then delivers the winner in OT, and LA ekes out a 3-2 win. LA goal scorers Boeser, Hintz, and Scheifele are the 3 stars of the game, but honorable mention to Shesterkin with 33 saves and Heiskanen with 2 assists, including on the game winner.

Charlotte 4 Alamo 2

David Perron nets a pair of goals and has two assists for a four-point night in the 5-3 win for Cincinnati. John Carlson has a goal and two assists as well. Defenseman Nic Hague delivers a pair of goals for Pittsburgh, which goes a perfect three-for-three on the power play.

Period 2 – The second period was relatively quiet until MacKinnon (3) evens the game with a goal at the 17:37 mark and we enter the locker rooms tied at 2

Period 3 – Portland’s youth and Gilbert’s experience shows in the third period as the Sharks outshoot the Storm 12-6 in the period. Gilbert gets their first lead of the game when Makar (2) scores is 2nd goal of the game 1:06 into the period. Portland manages to even the score on Farabee’s 2nd goal of his own at 7:02 but Burakovsky (5) gives the Sharks the lead again at the 9:59 mark and Backstrom (1) scores with 12 seconds left to put the game away 5-3

Period 2 – No scoring

Period 3 – With the score 2-1 Bathgate it remains scoreless until the 14:06 mark when Carlo (1) gets a power play goal and gives the Rangers a 3-1 lead with almost 6 minutes remaining. Portland showed some grit as the got within 1 goal with 4:16 remaining when Dunn (1) drills a shot from the blue line. Portland kept up the pressure in the final minutes but were uneven to even the score and lose 3-2

Zach Aston-Reese (3) continues his unexpected hot start as the 4th line continues their early success. 1-1.

2nd Period – Josi (1) gets his first of the season after a steal in the Chicago zone, then rips a slapper past Saros. 2-1 Bandits

Martinez (1) scores his first of the season as the #1 Defensive Pair seems to be heating up. 3-1 Bandits.

Debrincat (3) brings Chicago within 1, 3-2 Bandits lead.

3rd Period – Despite having a 1 goal lead, the Bandits put on the pressure to the tune of 17 shots (to CHI 10) and Guentzel (2) puts one past Saros to make it 4-2.

Pavelski (2) gets the empty netter to close it out 5-2.

A high scoring affair.

Guentzel (3) and Pavelski (3) both score as it seems like the Bandits 1st line is heating up finally. 2-0 Bandits

Bertuzzi (1) scores on the PP to make it 2-1 Bandits

2nd Period – Slavin (2) ties it up 2-2.

Less than 30 seconds later, Pavelski (4) gets the lead back on a breakaway goal for the Bandits 3-2.

11:04 sees Kopitar (3) continue to acclimate to his new team and leadership role, as he also scores on a breakaway making it 4-2 Bandits.

A little over a minute later “Not too fast” says Bertuzzi (2) with his 2nd of the game and the year to make it 4-3 Bandits.

About 2 1/2 minutes after that, Sprong (2) springs into action and and makes it 5-3 on yet ANOTHER breakaway goal for the Bandits.

Koskinen pulled… “Chief” Brodie (1) tosses it into the empty net to make it 6-3 Bandits.

Backup goalie Brossoit is caught napping when Petry blasts a laser past him to make it look closer than it was at 6-4… and that’s how it would end!

Winning both home games… seems like we’re still undefeated and potentially sitting alone in first place?

Andrei Vasilevskiy was simply brilliant in nets for the Bandits, shutting down the Buzzards following Stome’s goal and finishing with 44 saves (including 15 in the decisive third period). A pair of power play goals both in the first period by Brentwood’s Joe Pavelski lifted the Bandits to their early 3-1 lead before Charlotte fought back on goals from defenseman Brendan Dillon and center Pavel Zacha.

2nd period – When Lauzon gets caught for hooking, the Walleye take advantage quickly, and its Barrie with a rare shot from close in, giving the lead back to Toledo. The rest of the period sees Toledo fire shot after shot at California, but no dice. On the other side, California is very efficient with 5 SOG and 3 goals. Not sure Toledo’s goalie showed up. Gaudreau twice and Kane get 3 in the net, and flip the scoreboard to 4-2 Cal.

3rd period the goalies take charge and allow only one goal. Toledo gets the only score when Robertson scores with 4 minutes to go. After that, nothing happens and California escapes with the 4-3 win.

2nd and 3rd period is all Vasilevskiy, as he builds a brick wall, stopping all 29 shots from the Walleye. In the meantime, his teammates pick away at the Toledo lead. First Sprong to tie it up, and then later, Pavelski twice to make the final 4-2 Brentwood.
