BRENTWOOD BANDITS

Charlotte Buzzes into town as the co-leader in the Atlantic Division.

Sorokin vs. Vasilevskiy

1st Period

A pretty defensive period. Brentwood outshoots Charlotte 7-6.

2nd Period

Bandits come out firing and don’t let up until Vatrano (2) scores! Hallelujah! Two goals on the season! Look out Gretzky! 1-0 Bandits

Less than 3 minutes later, Vatrano (3) again!!?? Say what? Well now you’re just messing with me! Vatrano with two goals in a game? Two more than he had for most of the season? Sorry… just surprised lol Bandits up 2-0.

10 minutes later, The Big Pavelski (17) continues the onslaught making it 3-0!

3rd Period

Early on… around the 3 minute mark, we witness something we expected sometime this season until he didn’t score for the first 20 games! Frank Vatrano (4) scores to complete the Hat Trick!! Bandits up 4-0!

14:40, the Buzzards upset the shutout bid for Vasi when Myers (1) scores with a slapper from the point through traffic on the PP… 4-1 Bandits.

And that is how it would end. 4-1 Bandits win.

CINCINNATI INFERNO

@

BRENTWOOD BANDITS

The co-leading Inferno come to town to try to burn the place down!

Talbot vs Vasilevskiy

1st Period Pavelski (18) scores with a wrister from he slot… 1-0 Bandits.

Still in the 1st, on the PP… Pavelski (19) again! 2-0 Bandits

2nd Period

The Inferno coach must have sparked something to ignite the team as they come out FIRING to the tune of 15 shots (vs Bandits 7)…

58 seconds into the 2nd, Perron (10) scores to make it 2-1!

Later in the 2nd, on the PP… Carlson (5) ties it up 2-2!

Vasilevskiy would stop the rest of the rubber thrown at him in the 2nd.

So far, a tale of two periods! Who will gain that edge in the 3rd to win??

3rd Period

Early period goals continue as Josi (2) scores on a slapper from the point at 1:39 into the period! Bandits up 3-2!

10 minutes later, former Conn Smythe winner Phil “The Thrill” Kessel nets his 5th of the season to make it 4-2 Brentwood!

The Inferno fight to fan the flames and re-ignite the embers… but at 19:20 with Talbot on the bench, Alec Martinez (6) finds the empty net and puts this one to bed, 5-2.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Two tough opponents, two wins. The Bandits keep rolling…

Coach Tom Atkins had some words to say about Frankie V, “Frank stepped up yet again. We’re hoping his early season woes are an anomaly and a thing of the past.”

Amen, Coach.

Bathgate Rangers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Bathgate home for 3 this week; Alamo (doing well, but they are looking up at LA); Gilbert (sluggish start so far); and Thunder Bay (way off their usual high scoring tough defense pace). Ranger fighting to stay close to Brentwood and Jagr.

ALAMO DEFENDERS

@

BATHGATE RANGERS

Well both team will get a point as regulation ends at 4-4. Then OT almost goes the distance before the Rangers pull it out on a Provorov goal.
Bathgate 5 Alamo 4Rangers own the 1st as Donskoi starts out scoring twice in the opening 7 1/2 minutes, the 2nd goal a PP goal. Sid the former Kid gets 1 back for Alamo midway through the period but Zibanejad gets the Rangers 2nd PP goal with 6 to go and the Rangers skate off leading the 1st 3-1.The 2nd period was far less offensive and Jarnkrok scores the only goal in the 2nd 4 1/2 in and that makes it 3-2 Rangers. Alamo is clawing back.

They get all the way back in the 3rd when MWHL’s leading scorer Draisaitl scores one 9 minutes it to tie it at 3-3. However, 2 minutes later Oleksiak scores for Bathgate to regain the lead, 4-3. But with 3 minutes left, Tolvanen splites the pipes to retie the game, 4-4, and that’s how regulation ends.

OT was spirited with both teams giving it their all with Lehner and Reimer both making great saves. But in the end Tavares shoots it. Saved by Lehner and he holds on – timeout Rangers. They come back, Tavares beats Wheeler for the faceoff – to Donskoi, he passes to Provorov and GOAL! And game, 5-4 Rangers.

STARS:
1. BGR – Donskoi 2 goals, 1 assist
2. ALA – Crosby 1 goal, 1 assist
3. ALA – Draisaitl 1 goal, 1 assist

GILBERT SHARKS

@

BATHGATE RANGERS

Gilbert has been struggling this year but they took more shots on goal in this one, but Reimer was pretty much up to the task as he stops 32 of 33 shots and the Rangers win it
Bathgate 4 Gilbert 1Tavares and Zibanejad score for Bathgate in a 2-0 first period. In the 2nd the Rangers get outshot 11 to 4 but Buchnevich scores the only goal as the Rangers go up 3-0.

But with less than 8 to go in the 3rd, Gilbert and Zuccarello break up Reimer’s bid for a shutout when they beat him to make it 3-1. Then when the Sharks pressed hard at the end, Hertl scores an empty netter for the final score in the 4-1 Rangers win.

STARS (all BGR)
1. Reimer 32 saves
2. Buchnevich 1 goal
3. Hertl 1 goal

THUNDER BAY NORWESTERS

@

BATHGATE RANGERS

Rangers looking for a 3rd win – they have 1 in OT, 1 in regulation so why not 1 in a shoot-out! OK..
Bathgate 7 Thunder Bay 6 SOAnd it wasn’t even easy getting to the shoot-out!It looked like a pretty straight forward match – both teams scoring quickly, NorWesters get the 1st goal a minute in when Couturier beats Kahkonen. Then 3 minutes later Nugent-Hopkins beats DeSmith. However, it was at the point the Rangers forgot how to play defense and the NorWesters had their way at every turn. O’Reilly scores at 7 1/2. Then Connor scores twice, 1st at the midpoint and again with a PP goal with 4 to go. So it’s 4-1 Thunder Bay after 1.

In the 2nd they trade goals when Panarin scores for the Rangers 5 minutes in and then Landeskog tallies with 33 seconds left in the 2nd – so the Rangers find themselves down by 3 again as the 2nd period ends.

A minute and a half into the 3rd, the deficit grows to 4 when Landeskog gets goal #2 in the game (PP goal). However, the Rangers didn’t quit. Taveres scores with 11 1/2 to go, the Nugent-Hopkins gets his 2nd goal with 7 to go and the Rangers are now only down by 6-4. Keep pressing! Needing 2 goals, Kahkonen is pulled with 1 1/2 left. McCann comes on and he feeds Hertl who slides it to Panarin and he shoots and scores (his 2nd) as he puts it past DeSmith high on the stick side. 6-5 Thunder Bay 1:18 to go and timeout Bathgate. Rangers still with the empty net but Thunder Bay wins the draw an Conner takes the shot, but Provorov makes a nice block and Panarin and Pionk work the puck up ice. Provorov regains the puck slides it to Panarin. Hertl gets the puck, back to Panarin and he floats around the net for a wraparound – GOAL! Tie game, and hats are all over the ice! 54 seconds left and no one scores.

Then 5 minutes of OT – and no one scores thanks primarily to DeSmith making some brilliant saves (5 saves in the OT – in fact he had 42 saves for the game).

On to the shoot-out.
Conner is first and misses the net but Panarin beats DeSmith with a wrister (big day for the Breadman). Then Landeskog skates in on Kahkonen and fires from a backhand but it is stopped. McCann then tries his hand – glides in – fires and scores – GAME OVER.
Bathgate 7 Thunder Bay 6 SO

STARS:
1. BGR – Panarin 3 goals
2. TBN – Landeskop 2 goals, 2 assists
3. TBN – Connor 2 goals

WEEKLY SUMMARY: 3 games – 6 points (albeit 1 was OT, 1 was SO – but it still goes as a 6 point/3 game homestand).
LA Great Danes
WEEKLY PREVIEW: The Great Danes are coming off 3 straight overtime games last week, managing to win 2 of them, and try to keep pace with the MWHL leaders, as Brentwood and Bathgate home results are in for the week and they both continue their winning ways.

YELLOWKNIFE BRAVES

LA GREAT DANES

Last-place Yellowknife visits LA, and this one was an absolute disaster for the home team. No drama in this one and the game was over before some fans even got into the arena.

16 seconds in, Aho on a redirect and it’s 1-0 Braves. The next shot, also on a redirect, is in the net at 2:05 (Sharangovich), and at 2:49 Rantanen redirects one in the net. 3 shots, 3 redirect goals, and it’s 3-0 Braves. And that’s the end of Shesterkin’s night in goal, perhaps the shortest outing in MWHL history?

Things go from bad to worse, a minute later Varlamov is beat but saved by the post, but at 6:50 Bjorkstand tips it past Varly. 4-0 Braves after one, despite LA with a 16-9 shot advantage.

5 minutes into the 2nd, Aho scores again, this on a rebound into an empty net. In the 3rd, Morrissey with a shortie and Eberle a deflection goal, and that caps off a 7-0 shellacking.

Fleury is the #1 star with 42 saves, Aho has 1G-2A, and Duclair with 4 assists.

For Yellowknife, 6 players had multi-point games and all but 3 players had plus nights.

For LA, every single skater had a minus rating, and the goalie stats read:

Shesterkin 3GA, 0 saves
Varlamov 4GA, 10 saves

OUCH!!!! I guess the only consolation is that counts as only one loss in the standings, time to flush this one and move on.

LA GREAT DANES

After the Yellowknife fiasco, this game becomes a little more significant for LA. Can the Danes put that stinker behind them?

It’s a solid start for LA, but Matthew Tkachuk opens the scoring at 13:18 for Jagr. But Matthews takes a penalty 17 seconds later, and it takes 16 seconds on the power play for Mark Scheifele to tie the game. You could feel the tension in the arena evaporate as the Danes finally get a goal this week. And less than 2 minutes later, Giroux deflects one past Kuemper, and the SDA is rocking, with the fans finally having something to cheer about.

2-1 LA after one, and just 1:06 into the 2nd, Scheifele extends the lead with his 2nd of the night. No more scoring in period 2, but LA has back-to-back 2 on 1 shorthanded chances and can’t extend the lead.

So it’s 3-1 LA heading into the 3rd – the next goal will be huge as the Danes’ psyche is still a bit fragile after last game. When Great Dane Nikolaj Ehlers beats Kuemper at 7:50, LA is in control at 4-1. Austin Matthews scores with 4:29 left to make it 4-2, but Roope Hintz closes the game out with an empty-netter.

A big 5-2 win for LA. Scheifele’s 2 goals leads the way, and he gets his 5th GWG of the year. Claude Giroux had 1G-1A and was 15/19 on faceoffs against the elite group of Jagr centers. And Nikolaj Ehlers with 1G-1A and 5 scoring chances had his best game of the year.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: A 1-1 record at home is not great, but after the game against Yellowknife that could not have gone worse, a win against one of the big three from the Metropolitan Division was a good way to end the homestand.
Alamo Defenders
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Alamo hosts Pittsburgh and Toledo this week.

WEEKLY PREVIEW: A struggling Bucks County squad has one home game against, (gulp) Brentwood

BRENTWOOD BANDITS

BUCKS COUNTY RACCOONS

Brentwood scores 3 times in the first 10 minutes of the game which sends folks scurrying to the record books to see the high for goals scored in a league game, but the Raccoons hang on, cut the lead to 3-2 midway through the third until an empty net goal sews it up for Brentwood.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Looks to be a long year along the banks of the Delaware River for the Raccoons…..
Charlotte Buzzards
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Charlotte, after a three-game roadstand (including a reported loss to a formidable Brentwood squad), returned home to host Yellowknife this week.

YELLOWKNIFE BRAVES

@

CHARLOTTE BUZZARDS

The Buzzards (who have slid slightly after a hot start to drop into a first-place tie with Cincinnati in the Atlantic division) gathered themselves, reclaimed their defensive identity, and turned back the Braves in a 3-1 victory.

After the reported loss at Brentwood this week returned in, Charlotte recalibrated and returned a couple of its top players (kept out for usage previously) to its lineup that it was originally planning to continuing sitting out versus Yellowknife. The moves paid off. Top goalie Chris Driedger was reinserted last-moment and responded with a brilliant 30-save near-shutout effort, thwarted only by a Chris Kreider goal with 1:13 left in the third.

And defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, kept out of multiple contests lately for usage to coincide with the current skid, delivered a much needed power play goal in the second period, to provide Charlotte with an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

Early goals by forwards Ryan Johansen and Bryan Rust lifted Charlotte to an early 2-0 lead. Brad Marchand assisted on both.

Three stars all Charlotte:
1.Rust, 1 G, 2 Pts
2. Driedger 30 saves
3. Marchand 3 A

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Charlotte, after keeping numerous players out lately to pace usage (resting Carter Verhaeghe has been particularly painful), reinserts a couple of its top performers on the fly to capture a desperately-needed victory. The Buzzards stay afloat near the top spot in the division as they position themselves to field an optimal lineup for the rest of the season in short order.
Thunder Bay Nor’Westers
WEEKLY PREVIEW: Just one game on the home slate for Thunder Bay this week as the Nor’Westers look to make some noise in the very evenly balanced Atlantic Division against Bucks County.

BUCKS COUNTY RACCOONS

THUNDER BAY NOR’WESTERS

The Raccoons lost a heartbreaker to Thunder Bay 5-3 (last goal into the empty net). Despite being outshot on the night 46-19 and dominated in faceoffs, the visitors were in a 3-3 tie late into the third period thanks to the heroics of Jack Campbell in goal. But with :38 left in regulation time, and the Raccoons Zdeno Chara serving a tripping penalty, Marty Necas deflected Quinn Hughes’ drive past Campbell for the game winning PPG. Kyle Connor then added an ENG. 3 stars: (1) (BCR) – T.J. Oshie [2G]; (2) (TBN) – Kyle Connor [1G+1A]; (3) (TBN) – Ryan O’Reilly (1G+1A, 23 faceoff wins) – Connor gets a star for an ENG? No star for Campbell??

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Thunder Bay’s offense is a force to be reckoned with when going on all cylinders/
Chicago Cosa Nostra
WEEKLY PREVIEW: 3 home games for Chicago this week. Otto Mation leads the team one more week as rumors swirl that Stray may have been sited in the area, continuing to elude the authorities trying to serve warrants for his arrest. CIN 5, BGR 4 – OT

Max Pacioretty’s 13th goal of the year at 1:04 of overtime gave the Cincinnati Inferno a 5-4 win over the Bathgate Rangers. Dustin Brown had a pair of goals in the win for Cincinnati.

Joonas Donskoi had a pair of goals for Bathgate, which got a goal from Jakub Vrana at 10:35 of the third period to force the extra session. The story of the game was the Inferno power play, which cashed in on three of the four man-advantage situations. Bathgate was one-for-four with the extra attacker.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 21 shots in taking his eleventh win of the year. Alexandar Georgiev kicked away 23 shots in the defeat.

WEEKLY SUMMARY: Cincinnati takes care of business at home this week, winning a pair of games. Charlotte has also already won a pair of games so far this week — so the Inferno will continue to look up the ladder in the highly competitive Atlantic Division.

In overtime the wimpy play continues and Marchand complete the folding table act by the Walleye.
